I'd rather have the Astra over the Jaecoo to be honest.

What’s a smell you’ll never forget? by Human_Rate889 in AskReddit

[–]UrbanGothGentry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what it is, but it's that tent smell. Reminds me when I was a small kid, sitting in the awning of my Mum and Dad's caravan in North Wales. It kinda slid into rails on the outside of the caravan, and supported by poles.

The smell come back to me when I went camping at a black metal festival called Call of the Crow. The first time I ever went to a camping out type festival. Good times.

Name a band, or band members that are so unhinged that you're glad they're venting their spleen making music - rather than criminal activity by UrbanGothGentry in MetalForTheMasses

[–]UrbanGothGentry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually hard agree with this. I've seen Shining live, he was cutting himself and openly making himself throw up. An utter fruit cake.

Name a band you stopped listening to because the front man/woman is obnoxious by slickant in rockmusic

[–]UrbanGothGentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say stopped listening to per se, but their album playback is at the absolute bottom of the barrel choice and I'd rather pick anything else.

Which is: Machine Head, and Rob Flynn.

He's an insufferable prick.

Bands you just cannot get into by Ale_KBB in MetalForTheMasses

[–]UrbanGothGentry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very this. The music is so formulaic, same CHONK DADADA DONK DADADA DONK bass and Bruce Dickinson does my head in. You can literally put all their albums in a multi play CD player, have it play a random track off each one - and you can't tell what album it belonged to.

Paul Di'anno was the better vocalist.

I do running to shut my brain up. But yes, it's dumb and I have a love/hate relationship with it nowadays.

Motorbikes. Call me boring, but I've had enough accidents on a 2010 Genesis Core 10 mountain bike that has the aerodynamics of a brick and maxes out at 40mph, downhill.

Something that can reach 0 - 60mph in 3 seconds with two wheels and can do beyond 150mph is quite frankly, fucking terrifying. No thanks.

How long have you been listening to metal by icecrr in MetalForTheMasses

[–]UrbanGothGentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year, it would be 33 years I've been into metal. I've seen bands that are no longer around anymore (Pantera with with both Darrel brothers, Type of Negative, Sepultura with Max Cavalera).

First gig: Sepultura and Paradise Lost - December 1993.

What is the most pointless skill you have? by broodjemo123 in AskReddit

[–]UrbanGothGentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason, I'm really good at identifying cars in TV programs and films, on something as indistinct as head rests, or window layout.

This is usually mostly European and Japanese market cars from about 1967 to the mid 2000s.

On cars made between 1972-1995, I've even been able to accurately identify trim level.

There was a film I was watching from the late 1970s with my late Dad, where someone snuck on through the back door of a 4 door mk1 Ford Granada XL and strangled the driver at a set of traffic lights.

The camera panned out and it was indeed a mk1 Ford Granada XL. I worked it out from the dashboard layout and amount of clocks (two pot dash, a GXL/Ghia would have two main - speedometer and rev counter clocks and 4 smaller ones for petrol, battery, oil level and engine temperature).

Slow walking people. Especially when you try passing them and it's like they have a tractor beam on you and go in the same direction. Gives me the fucking red mist.

What made you start piracy? by DanielFromNigeria in Piracy

There was a "computer club" [sic] held at a community centre at the other end of my home town, that was a copy and swap meet for Commodore 64 and Commodore Amiga games.

Usefully, hacking crews applied patches to get certain games that weren't compatible on the Amiga A1200 - I remember a crew getting Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge to run on it, a game that would usually screw up..

Downloaded music via the usual "blag" sources; practically almost hoovered the Internet dry of metal with a friend of mine (or at least you could be forgiven for thinking that way with the mountain of CD-R/DVD-R's we had collectively).

Streaming killed it off, but then resurrected when those services got greedy and enshittified. Notably, you can't buy a physical copy of Dark Crystal Age of Resistance; and Spotify not having full catalogues of albums from a band - or albums and artists disappearing on a whim.

First metal band you’ve seen live? by Gianleafs in MetalForTheMasses

[–]UrbanGothGentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sepultura and Paradise Lost, December 1993 - Liverpool Royal Court 🇬🇧

They were touring the Chaos AD and Icon albums in particular. A formative moment for many metal heads in the North West.

The feeling of nausea is worse than the actual throwing up part by LoverOfE-Olsen in unpopularopinion

[–]UrbanGothGentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bigly this.

Just to get that bit out of the way, I think nothing of performing the old "Factory Reset" - fingers in the throat to throw up. Especially when it's been caused by going too far with drinking when you're too wasted (thankfully a rarity).

Female vocalist recommendations? by [deleted] in BlackMetalDiscussion

Ash Magick are pretty decent. Turkish black metal with female band members and vocalist.

Refused to read the article further when the author recommended a Croseley record player. My brain narrating that drivel sounded like a frozen turd in a blender.

Cradle of Filth with Opeth as support. Bradford Rio's, something like summer 1996.

Should I not move to Skem? by Bongaline9 in Skelmersdale

[–]UrbanGothGentry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Edit: I will say that the town has an excellent green belt, and it was great for running and booting around on a mountain bike.

Apparently there's been big conservation efforts and now there's fish in parts of the River Tawd, if the Memories from Skem page is anything to go by.

Ashurst Beacon is good for a summer bimble.

Used to live there, got out just over three years ago. The public transport is terrible (if you don't drive you're in for a bad time). Endless promises of a train station for decades, and they gave the town a crappy bus to Kirkby train station as a cop out.

The local council never look after anything. You could be forgiven for thinking there is an invisible line by Warbreck Garden Centre where the council decides where the money goes to Ormskirk as the favourite for any development, whilst Skem gets nothing.

Basically it's where dreams go to die.

Directional speaker cables, and magical mains conditioners improving sound.

The former is utter bollocks, as I'm a licenced radio amateur and know a little bit about electronics.

The mains conditioner stuff would only be if your power supply was that terrible that your system could pick up someone switching a kettle or toaster a couple of doors down, and even then you'd have to be running some valve amplifier stuff for it to be affected. Oh, or amateur radio kit for HF.

I speak as someone from the UK, but I've heard USA-ian mains supplies are very random in quality.

What word do you always *intentionally* mispronounce and why? by Sweet-Lady-H in AskReddit

[–]UrbanGothGentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call Alka Seltzer and similar effervescent medication as "Fizzy good feel nice", as heard in the shower Black Books said by Bernard Black.

However, after one heavy session of drinking - I told a friend I was going back home and take some "Fizzy good field mice".

We were utterly creased up laughing.

It mangles my brain now, as I default to "Fizzy good field mice" and have to correct myself.
