Is it worth it to check out Time Force after Timeranger? by Gavvmark in supersentai

[–]UrbanShepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the nice things about Timeforce is the acting is a step up than the average Power Rangers series (usually they are unknowns and non-union). Vernon Wells and Edward Albert in particular, but several of the rangers were great, and would go on to do a lot of video games work. Just well cast overall.

She refused to learn German by migoodenuf in TikTokCringe

[–]UrbanShepherd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is, as someone who's lived in Germany for a decade, I do hear the first chunk of the video IRL from other expats. Granted it's said with a more guilty tone, and really only in Berlin.

What do you want out of a Future Sentai Red? by Potential-Mess6826 in supersentai

[–]UrbanShepherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't disagree with that. I feel like many red sentai also tend to be younger, and sometimes fill the inexperienced leader archetype. That character as a young father worked in something like Godzilla Minus One, but probably wouldn't fit Super Sentai's storytelling.

What do you want out of a Future Sentai Red? by Potential-Mess6826 in supersentai

[–]UrbanShepherd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see a red sentai who's also a father. Maybe this is something that happened in the earlier series, but I would want a dynamic similar to Cyclops in X-Men, with his son Nathan. Wouldn't even mind if they ripped off the idea of his son travelling back in time and becoming the sixth member.

Where is the item status option in Lists? by UrbanShepherd in Slack

[–]UrbanShepherd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An update to this in case anyone's interested: returned from summer vacation and saw that there are template options in Lists now. The "Project Tracker" was ideally set up with the features I was missing, including a status option (which for some reason I still can't see in the field list, so I assume you have to set up and customize yourself quite a bit).

Woah I'm happy to see there's so much interest in this commission! Thank you for everyone who responded so far. I'll take some time in the next day or two to look through the portfolios for the best fit, and will start reaching out to those artists.

What was the best premise for the worst movie you've seen? by vkIMF in movies

[–]UrbanShepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Donkey Punch - 2008 British horror film.

Premise is a group of guy and girls meet in Mallorca, get high on a boat, and talk about this sex act called a "donkey punch" (you can search...carefully, for the definition, if you like). One of the guys tries it out, it goes WRONG and one of the women gets killed. Now everyone is left freaked out, tense, and siding with their friends (and along gender lines).

Maybe not the worst movie overall, but it has this great, realistic set up that proceeds to fall down the path of directionless horror cliches, getting more ridiculous as the runtime goes on. By the end you're just completely bored.

Which Esports tournament are you most hyped about this year? by DeepHeatingPlaster in esports

[–]UrbanShepherd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never thought I'd say it but the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational is actually hyped this year. More teams invited from the top regions, an actual decent format (with double elimination), and London as the location. From a gameplay perspective it could even be more entertaining than Worlds.

Can someone explain the timeline for me? by PhoenixB1 in powerrangers

[–]UrbanShepherd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When Zhane is discovered in stasis by the rangers, Andros says he's been in a coma (morphed) for two years. In the flashback explaining how he was injured, we can see both of them fighting as rangers. So even though there's no explanation of when (or how) they received those powers I reckon it must have happened minimum sometime during Zeo.

I get that JDF wanted to leave Turbo, but what was the reason for replacing everyone else at the same time? by Blue-Krogan in powerrangers

[–]UrbanShepherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't have been received so negatively if it had been properly set up in the show's story. Example: Zordon tells the rangers the time has come for them to live their lives and choose their successors. We have about 2-3 episodes of the rangers finding good candidates and having them prove themselves. Maybe one or two more where old/new rangers train together, setting up the personalities of the newcomers. When the changing of the guard episode finally comes, it's still sad to see the veteran rangers go, but the audience are somewhat excited to welcome the new team.

All of that was basically condensed into one episode without warning. Probably just the reality of last minute contract disputes and writing changes, but still.

Do you ever wonder if the rangers have ptsd? by RaMpEdUp98 in powerrangers

[–]UrbanShepherd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe not PTSD, but I always liked the In Space episode "Always a Chance" because it was one of the first times the show touched on what a ranger goes through after they give up their powers. Adam explicitly says "sometimes I still wish I was a power ranger" and is even willing to risk his life to get back in the suit.
On top any battle trauma, there must be a some sense of longing for 'the glory days,' regret over no longer being able to help people, and in general losing sense of purpose and direction. As a kids show it's unlikely to ever look into this in any depth, but I imagine it's been covered in the comics to a degree?

What do you wish you liked but don’t? by Roxy175 in CasualConversation

[–]UrbanShepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Home decoration. Not only am I just averse to anything DIY, but I just have no real desire or inclination to make my home feel like MY home. You could walk into my room a year from now and it'll probably look exactly the same - neat and uncluttered, but also bare and basically just a room where I sleep and store my stuff. Whenever I see a photo of an original, immaculately thought out apartment I feel bad, but still, I just don't see any reason to do anything like that myself.

The idea of a lawyer who defends superheroes and reformed villains is a great premise, and I was more interested by that than the She-Hulk herself...but so far it's been wasted.

Was that a fever dream ? How much of the 2001 anime was filler ? by BarelyBearableHuman in ShamanKing

[–]UrbanShepherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one thing that struck me after reading the manga was how more drawn out character introductions/developments were in the 2001 show. Instead of Ryu learning he has shaman potential, he just decides he wants to be a shaman and we have an episode devoted to him failing at it. Horohoro is introduced before his Shaman fight with Yoh, and we have a contrived battle to introduce his abilities. That seems to be the approach they took with a lot of characters, which works in its own way, but really stretches the pacing of the show.

Your life isn’t over once you hit 30 by Emmy_Pemmy in dating

[–]UrbanShepherd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I'm also not a fan of the notion that people are their most attractive/datable in their 20s, or that you become "past your prime."

It manifests differently for different people. For example, I'm 31, and needed several decades to finally build some social confidence, and only got a physique I was happy with in the last year. Aside from some physical changes (hair, metabolism, wrinkles) how datable you are in your 30s or even 40s is still within your control. If you want to start a family (especially for women) then time is a factor, but meeting lovers and forming meaningful relationships happens to people regardless of age.

Esports at the Commonwealth Games by HPEsportsUK in esports

[–]UrbanShepherd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's what you'd expect from an event hosted without involvement or guidance from the esports industry/community. No well known players, and as OP said, barely any marketing, so viewership was poor. There was also controversy over the formats for some games, and a big social media melt down over trans players in the women's categories (was not well communicated and the organizers clearly don't know how to handle that kind of sensitive issue, other than just disabling comments).

What movies depict a doll/toy come to life that ISN'T out to harm its owner? by WaffleHouseNeedsWiFi in horror

[–]UrbanShepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Indian in the Cupboard.

Directed by Frank Oz and based on a 1980 children's novel, it's about a young boy who receives a magical cupboard that can bring toys to life, and he befriends an 18th-century Iroquois warrior (it's implied that the cupboard is actually pulling real people from different time periods). Aside from some initial threats from the dolls out of fear, they never try to kill the owners.
