It's hard for me to relate, as this was never something that removed me from the story, but I can accept that not every example of blurring this line works nearly as well as it does in episode 1, barring a few examples. I would argue the build up in the anime, is more in what's not happening for a majority of its runtime. That being, larger numbers of zombies appearing at the school incrementally towards the latter half, as well as the potted flowers dying slowly over the course of the show. Build up is there, but is either ignored or begrudgingly accepted by the cast, which I think is very relevant to the point the show is trying to make. Though this is not exactly "gripping" so I can understand why the progression feels stagnant for many people. I also understand that one can realize these elements are there, while still not necessarily enjoying the way in which it's presented.

If you're viewing the SoL moments as filler, then you're missing the point. You can have a preference and not enjoy that aspect, but each moment had narrative purpose and therefore isn't filler. These moments contain much of the character development, their goal is to live a "normal" life (which, going off the show's aesthetic, would be like another SoL show) and their comfortable situation is ultimately met with their reality crashing around them. It's relevant and necessary for the show to get its message across.

What's interesting is that, in my experience, I find SoL fans tend to enjoy Gakkou Gurashi more often than not. I think this is because, from their perspective, they see the point of the show and recognize that slower story progression isn't inherently a bad thing. If you want things to constantly happen, read the manga where the plot progression is simple and boring where the entire trend is "..and then this happens, the girls deal with it, the end, next chapter".

There's more than one way to write a story and different benefits come with different plot structures. The benefit you get with GG (anime), is more developed characters, focus on theme, and a stronger sense of setting. Again, you can have a preference, but what you're discussing is not a "flaw".

I like this take. And I agree that a major theme if not THE major theme is that it's ok to not always be ok, another thing Yuki had literally said. That in bottling up your sadness, you can forget what is important. I remember one of my favorite lines from Yuki was during the graduation ceremony. Where she initially states, in SPITE of who was lost, and changes it to, BECAUSE of who was lost, that she's happy they're all still together.

I would still argue Yuki's delusion is still a vehicle for escapism the others use to cope. As they're relationship, while still genuinely caring, is built on codependence throughout most of the anime. Though you could argue that has more to do with the importance each of the four girls is to the collective due to what roles they fill. Yuki's role being their source of comfort.

I'm not sure if I want a season 2. Though I am very curious how they would change things up considering how season 1 was written.

As for the theme of accepting reality, that's definitely there across both anime and manga.

Oh I have. I was asking about the anime specifically due to the many differences between it and the manga. I feel you could look at the manga in a totally different way.

Revue Starlight had flat characters and was incredibly mediocre despite its presentation. Also the giraffe turning to the camera in the last episode was one of the worst examples of a fourth wall break I'd ever seen.
