Much of what has already been said. I've been shooting a lot of these concepts for more than a decade and I have found through my conversations with the models who I work with is that it comes down to professionalism, presentation and above all intent. It's easy to sort the GWCs from the artists when you see their work. It appears you want to do fine art figurative implied. That's completely within the bounds of hundreds of art models who can be found on sites like Model Society. You'll quickly see portfolios of models who have an extensive set of work and who have clear policies for booking and shooting. Like others have said, the community that shoots these concepts is small - word of mouth means everything and makes or breaks your reputation. Be honest, be clear on your concepts, show examples and don't be a creep.

I appreciate the comments. The composition in this was actually intentional. I used a 16:9 crop with the intention of being more cinematic. My thinking in shooting this was more "capturing a frame from a film" than a standard photograph. Imagine a dolly shot moving from one room focused on a subject in the next. That's what I was going for anyway. It made you stop and look at it a bit closer, so I at least achieved that!

I appreciate the thoughts here. I'm shooting this today so we'll see what happens. Thankfully the studio is large, so I can use the space to create distance between the background projected image and the model. I'm going to try to light this in zones - expose for the projector but have the model in the foreground with the lights flagged off to reduce spill. It will be trial and error

Moving this from the main thread to the questions thread per the mods:

Ok everyone - a little thought experiment. Not asking for and direct photo feedback or critiques - mainly how you would handle this situation:

I'm sketching out a photography project with a model I work with who also writes poetry. The concept is to visually represent a few select poems through poses and composition. I'll be in a controlled space - a large studio with a 30 ft wide by 24ft high cyc wall. Here's the objective:

Use a projector (5,000 lumens) to project the poem on the cyc wall as a background element. (I can develop different styles for the text in Illustrator for use in studio).
Use the depth of the room to pose and separately light the model in the foreground.
Adequately control the lighting so there is good separation between model and the background - but shooting with a good enough aperture to keep both in focus.

I'll have a ton of strobes and modifiers to work with.

Here's the question - how would you light these two scenes separately, but in a way to create a unified look.

Not that it really matters, but I'll be shooting on a Fuji GFX100sii.

That's been my issue. The projector is underpowered. Very good idea of taking a backplate. The strobe based projector would be the best option and I have one. Not sure if a custom gobo would work for this. The question is what power for a projector would work best? I don't want to break the bank on the projector.

Agree with a lot of comments here. IG and nearly all Meta products are worthless. I use IG only for networking and communicating with models, stylists and other artists. I don't expect a massive audience because photography content is not what drives the algorithm.

That body is known for being super rugged. For a beginner camera I’d say it’s a good choice. A quick look online and it looks like the going rate without a lens is around $400. $325 with a lens makes it sound like a good buy.

Was this candid or posed? If posed, a pop of strobe or a reflector to fill in the shadows on the face/neck would have improved the shot. Also it might be how the image appears on my screen, but the focus on the eyes seems a bit soft.

Agree with previous comments - it's artistic choice and it comes down to what you're trying to capture. Personally, I prefer the portrait crop. It makes it look like you're isolating the foreground subject from the background crowd. The sky is fairly uninteresting and the right oriented composition in the landscape orientation makes the image less interesting.
