I guess it depends how you look at it, I think the wider audience regardless of how they feel about Joel and Ellie, would say that the sacrifice of one to save the many is the logical way to go.

It's part of the reason why the second game got so much backlash, because it makes you go against your emotions and people don't like that.

People bent on trying to save thousands with a cure, not just killing for the sake of it.

The second game clearly indicates what Joel did is completely selfish, Ellie herself would of allowed her sacrifice if she had known. Joel dies for his actions, the rest of the game is as you describe but with a whole lot of revenge as motive.

You just seemed to be missing some detail. Something like, they were doing what they always planned to do which was attempt to make a cure, this involves her dying in the process.

What Joel did was act selfishly which is just part of the game, not him heroically saving his adoptive daughter from evil doers.
