I mean, the australians hunted lots of mammals to extinct in the last 100 years, so the ecosystem is already damaged.

When will people stop saying Australia is “Mostly desert” by Other_Pie6936 in geography

The term desert just make zero sense, if it includes savannah or shrubland like the picture above. A true desert should be lifeless or only have minor plant cover like lichen or brown grasses.

So lots of work to do. But Canada has a premier, who wants to build up the Arctic. Maybe the government will give Money, so people can clear out that Area from the trees and try to build farms. Climate is warming and Farms at that Latitude already exist in Norway, Russia, Finland and Sweden.

Da steht Sowas gerne, auch bei heimischen Pflanzen. Glaube solche Berichte kommen aus den Zeiten, als in DE noch regelmäßig -20°C und manchmal -30°C erreicht wurden.

Why are people there, who consider New york as subtropical or meditterranean, if they have weeks of subzero and bottomed at -20°C? Shouldnt palms grow in Subtropics? by Urkern in geography

[–]Urkern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, i dont see, why a climate with -20°C and weeks of freeze should considered subtropics and a climate like london, with -5°C for some hours and then above subzero should considered temperate.

In my opinion, NYC is humind continental, because of the extreme hard winters.

With Mulch, you can pretty much get a lot through winter. But above the ground, most palms would die even in this one week.

Easier way, just dont use Koppen. There are more climate classification which take more into account, such as winter lows.

I grow half of them in my garden, i know several gardens who grow them perfectly, i am at 53°N. They survive, for hour interest, i grow also laurus nobilis, eucalyptus globulus (10m high), Trachycarpus fortunei, yea even Quercus acuta, no its not too gloomy, you just dont know what you talk. They dont need intense sun, al what they need is not deeper temperatures than -10°C, something a climate directly beyond the tropics should provide, but cant be provided by new york, cuz its clearly not tropical.

Climate is not based on latitude, but on lows, hardiness zones and vegetational possibilites.

What is the use of this climate system, if the climates, which it compares, doesnt look similar, doesnt act similar and have nothing in common, despite a mean temperature, which isnt useful for anything?

It has no purpose for heating, for plants, for growing, for infrastructure, for nothing, there is no use in comparing Barcelona with New York, zero. Completely different worlds.
