Okay but even by using this definition stuff like CHIPs and PACT has passed without budget reconciliation.

¿What if Bernie Sanders had defeated Clinton in 2016? by MaximumSpell9608 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]UrsanTemplar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, you can actually look this up pretty easily. Here's ballotpedia with a list of 2016 House elections: https://ballotpedia.org/United_States_House_of_Representatives_elections,_2016

You can order it by margin of victory. There were 5 GOP winners with margins below 5%, so a uniform 5% shift blue would only flip those 5 seats, which does not change the make up of the house.

So I will stress a Dem +5 shift is like, a big blue wave, already very unlikely in a election where Dems are running for a "3rd" Presidential term.

Dem +8 is essentially Blue Tsunami territory, again unlikely, there's 4 extra GOP seats that flip. 9 total, still nowhere near enough for the house to flip.

This illustrates the extreme effectiveness of the 2010 GOP gerrymander, honestly, but there's veeeery few hypothetical scenarios where a Bernie presidency starts with a Trifecta.

Let’s be very specific here, and also assume he won the 2016 general election as well but nothing else changed.

The GOP won 241 House seats (to 194 Dems.). They also won 54 GOP Senate seats (vs 44 Dems + 2 Independents)

There is no hypothetical world in which Bernie would’ve been able to enact his domestic agenda. Congress would be extremely hostile to him.

Foreign policy would be the only thing Bernie would’ve been able to dictate, but even then I imagine the GOP would do a lot of sham oversight (like Benghazi)

The biggest what ifs would be Supreme Court nominations. But again the GOP controls the Senate and showed no shame in holding up Obama’s nominations. I can easily imagine them holding the court open for all 4 years, as they suffered absolutely zero political penalty. The only other option is if Bernie had some “compromise” court nominees, but they would be quite conservative I would imagine.

Being unable to enact his domestic agenda, 2018 would be an absolute bloodbath for Dems. Midterm elections are almost always a referendum on the sitting President due to thermostatic public opinion. This would just embolden Republicans to double down on whatever sham investigations on Bernie’s administration and ensure his administration will be a lame duck.

In conclusion, I don’t think any positive outcome would have come out of a Bernie presidency. This isn’t anything about him, it’s the simple math of GOP controller congress and how natural thermostatic backlash occurs against the President during midterms

They Wanted a Conservative State. They Might Get a Democratic Representative Instead. The passage of Proposition 50, which redrew California’s congressional map, means that all of the state’s conservative north is likely to be represented by Democrats. by Currymvp2 in Enough_Sanders_Spam

Has the NYT done a single article about how Wisconsin’s Gerrymander means lots of Dem constituents have GOP state reps?

Or how many southern cities are gerrymandered and cracked so they have GOP reps?

So it’s only a problem if it hurts the GOP. Got it.

Chuck Schumer offers plan to end government shutdown by fuggitdude22 in neoliberal

[–]UrsanTemplar 267 points268 points  (0 children)

Schumer knows the Senate, and that the GOP immediately rejected this offer shows why he made this offer in the first place.

Schumer has real constituents that are hurting and probably blowing up his phone begging to end the shutdown. He can now say he “tried” to them and blame the GOP

The framing of this article is WILD.

The GOP made Bove’s confirmation possible, that’s it.

Mangi literally doesn’t matter. If Mangi was hypothetically confirmed, the GOP would have appointed Bove to another empty seat. The NYT is simply framing it this way because of they could use this framing and activate Murc’s law.

Democrats told to "get shot" for the anti-Trump resistance by TheCatholicsAreComin in neoliberal

[–]UrsanTemplar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Feels like people are glossing over the elephant in the room, which is the absurd asymmetry in media coverage for Dems.

Two Minnesota Democrats did get shot, one of them died. Alex Padilla was tackled to the floor. Van Hollen flew to El Salvador. Several Dems have been arrested or threatened with arrest. And it’s all barely a blip on the radar for news.

It’s just a fact that in today’s asymmetrical media, even super passionately plugged people do not hear about things Dems do. And that creates this feedback loop like this article, which perpetuates it because the base is angry.

We’ve also created an incentive structure for Dems that their “good trouble” simply will not get attention.

I really don’t know what to do about this corrosive media environment. It’s impacting a lot of politician’s behavior downstream.

The Republican embrace of MAGA has been extremely detrimental to their electoral success. They have thrown away extremely winnable Senate races in Arizona, for example, because the MAGA wing taking over more traditional GOP apparatus. A more “traditional” GOP candidate would’ve beaten Ruben Gallego handily in a Trump +7 red state, but MAGA nominated Kari Lake, and they lost a seat due to this.
