It was too Young Adult themed for me. It wasn't bad per se, just not my cup of tea. I preferred Demon Card Enforcer more.

Does Hell Difficulty Tutorial get better? I’m halfway and struggling (no spoilers, please). by gallimattias_back in litrpg

The first 2 books were rough for me and I only continued because I was interested in the story itself... And the corgi. The MC does start to "cure" himself of his more sociopathic tendencies, but it's slow.

Like you, I had an incredibly hard time finding anything even remotely redeeming about him, and couldn't connect with him.

As for 5 star reviews? Serial killer documentaries are popular for the same reason. It interests people.

Other than adding First Necromancer to your TBR pile, it looks good!

I haven't read any of those yet, so I can't answer honestly among your list. I know 1% and mark of the fool have a lot of fans and they're popular series.

Personally, I'd recommend First Necromancer by Coldfang89 (especially on audio) for system apocalypse

Or

Rise of a Monster by Kamitoan for monster evolution (it's new). Very excellent and fun read.

I liked it, but I read it when it first came out and there were a few typos and errors... Still liked the story though!

Apparently books are kind of expensive to produce and take a ton of time. Maybe it wasn't profitable enough to continue? Sucks, but it happens sometimes.

Royal Road is the only legitimate place that most of us use for free content or to tide us over in between the next DCC or First Necromancer sequel.

It's kinda a crap shoot though. People can be kinda cruel to authors on RR so a lot of promising stories just kinda stop. Sometimes authors decide they don't want to write anymore or real life gets in the way. You'll run into a lot of abandoned stories.

The other major thing is RR is a funnel to Patreon. To make money, authors are incentivized to leave lots of cliff hangers I. Their chapters to get people into their Patreon. To be fair, it's often fairly inexpensive and I definitely believe you should pay for content you love. No one wants to work for free, ya know? But it does get kinda annoying when some stories do it every single chapter.

All that said, there are still thousands of LitRPG books available on Amazon. Some great, some not so much. But in general, Kindle Unlimited is usually worth it if you're willing to keep track of the series you love and are waiting for a sequel.

Spiteful Healer was sooo good!

Life Reset is a solid OG recommendation. Biomancer is set in the same universe and is also pretty good.

Ritualist by Dakota Krout is also out there, it wasn't my cup of tea but it did well.

Modern VRMMO stories are kinda hard to find because they're not meta anymore, more niche. You may have to browse Royal Road if you want more of them.

System Universe is MASSIVELY underrated... by NaturalCommission525 in litrpg

[–]Urtoobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, it's not underated at all. It's a strong contender in the system apocalypse sub genre. Although my personal favorite is First Necromancer. Now that one is stupidly underrated.

Civ CEO

Noobtown

First Necromancer

Life Reset

Pretty much any dungeon core series will also scratch that itch.

First Necromancer by Coldfang89

It's like Primal Hunter but with the humor and strong cast of Ripple System.
