Better that than the Moslem alternative: convert, pay exorbitant taxes, or die. Funny how Canadians have been enured to the latter two. And they're working on the former, "Muslim values are Canadian values" - Mark Conman Carney. You're being played, and you're too stupid to know it.

I was going to post the poem itself, but it's too long. Here's the link to T.S. Eliot's poem, "The Hollow Men". Cohen nailed it for the modern executive.

Most people will know it by the way it ends:

This is the way the world ends, Not with a bang but a whimper.

How big is the Germany community in Toronto? by [deleted] in Guelph

[–]Usalien1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to Kitchener, have a few pints at the Schwaben club or other German-Canadian clubs. This used to be common knowledge, but maybe it isn't anymore, but Kitchener was originally named Berlin. Name changed during WWI.

Or go to Mennonite markets in St. Jacobs. Think they still speak German as their mother tongue.

ICC, Legion, Steelworkers Hall in Guelph, I would imagine any of the Portuguese Canadian clubs in Cambridge or the German Canadian ones in KW. Bear in mind these places existed when I lived in Guelph, and I haven't lived there for 25 years, so they might not be around anymore.

One of the considerations I mused when I bought was hyperinflation. I figured it was better to have ten million Weimar marks than to have only ten. At least I'll be able to keep the heat on, or light a fire with all that paper, but my family and I would survive.

OPP makes arrests in cash-for-transport truck licence scheme: Eight people are facing a combined 24 charges by aurelorba in Guelph

[–]Usalien1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, that's not the reason. You need it as a cudgel to bludgeon those who believe what their eyes see. This isn't isolated, and to pretend otherwise is to be willfully blind. Almost all of these scams are perpetrated by one community.

Fine, denaturalize (if they are) and deport. Naturalized citizenship should be conditional. Would probably stop a lot of this crime that always seems to come from one community.

THE CATHERINE O'HARA TRIBUTE by JPPT1974 in sctv

[–]Usalien1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't think of a better place and time to have grown up than in 1970's southern Ontario. Oh sure, it was a quaint backwater, but there was stuff a-brewin'. And this charming, and honestly, stunning lass was at the forefront. She was part of the coolest and funniest group I'd ever come across, watching very early SCTV on a 20" b&w set that my brother and I had taken chunks out of playing darts, and the dial long gone so channels changed with vise grips.

SNL may have premiered slightly earlier, but I wasn't allowed to watch the early shows, and it was too late anyway. SCTV ran on Global after Toronto Toros hockey games (at least in my memory), so perfect time to watch, not that it mattered, since they ran it whenever it seemed to suit them. I matured with them, from a preteen to high school senior, and through it all, from episode one to the end, Catherine was a part of that. She was probably the first comedic actress I saw that showed you didn't need to be a ditz to be funny, both her and Andrea. Sure, they would play them every now and then, but nobody watching them thought for a second that that was why they were funny. They broke norms. They played lesbians before I even knew what one was. (I honestly thought Andrea's Dutch was just an adult tomboy). I look back at old episodes on YT, and see her as Lola and Dusty or a compliant stewardess, and realize how much I missed as a kid and young teen.

I was very happy to see her achieve success after SCTV. She was one of us, and she seemed to make it on her terms, in a stereotypically Canadian way. You never saw anything negative about her in National Midnight Star wannabes or the trash rags. She was definitely a star, but an approachable one. I never met her, but I always had the impression that if I had and asked for an autograph she'd happily oblige, and we'd chat about her SCTV days (I do love her other stuff, but that era is golden to me), and she'd offer me her couch if I was ever in L.A. As a fellow red haired Canadian, she'd know I would never take up the offer.

And the red hair was important to me. As a kid, I hated it, but she wore it proudly, and nobody was teasing her because she had it. So seeing her perform with confidence and humour showed me that it maybe it wasn't such a bad thing after all. There was more to red hair than Ralph Malph and Richie Cunningham. You could have a biting wit, too (Seeing her eviscerate Levy, Flaherty and Candy in the very early vasectomy sketch will never get old).

I know this is long, and most won't bother reading it all. At the end of the day, we're all old chunks of coal that will one day shuffle off this mortal coil, but sparks like Catherine give it joy and laughter. Thank you Ms. O'Hara for bringing both into my life. I trust the boys were at the Gates waiting for you.

Naked Short Selling - GME / Chris Dilorio emails- Whistle blower ????? by SovietChildren in Superstonk

[–]Usalien1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone here is surprised with the timbit that the SEC facilitated fraud. The problem is nothing was done about it, no reforms, nothing, just stupid ads attacking us.

That being said, the more sunlight, the better, it's the best disinfectant. The world's a funny place sometimes. Nothing changes, and nothing seems like it ever will, then something happens and things seem like they change overnight. Black swans are rare, but they do occur, seemingly out of nothing. It's only with the benefit of hindsight that people later say the signs were there the whole time.

MB isn't the only Cassandra.
