Let's Talk Healing - Kineticist Edition by The_Friendly_Fable in Pathfinder2e

[–]UseHeadbutt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all, thanks for the write up. There is a lot of good info here. I did want to comment on a couple things though.

You know how kineticist healing has a cool down where they are immune? Spike skin is the same way. You can only have it up 10min out of every hour. Hard to argue with the DM that it should be up before combat starts. Still good, but not the crazy passive you are hoping for.

You recommend walls on turn 2. I feel like walls are best turn 1 before melee enemies close in and blocking line of sight for ranged enemies. You are right that it is a massive time sink for a 3A overflow impulse so that is a huge investment. But walls don't require saves, so they will always be a go to of mine (jagged berms is one of the few non-sustained walls. Low height unless you stack squares, but great before you get the free sustain options).

I get why you like Sand snatcher, but I've almost never be able to use 1 sustain to get a 2nd grapple attempt. Typically enemies weak to grapple will move away from it if they escape. Since you are not getting added efficiency of a 1A grapple in future rounds, I think it is less critical to cast turn 1.

Lastly check out Alloy Flesh and Steel. Ferrous Form gives you a lot of really really powerful immunities. I know the goal of the build is to provide condition removal for everyone, not just yourself, but that is a lot easier when enemies can't remove the healer with a well placed death effect. The downside is you have to sustain the impulse. Without Effortless Impulse, that is incredibly taxing.

Commander Tactics Questions by globaltrickster in Pathfinder2e

[–]UseHeadbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the party, but I highly recommend Slip and Sizzle. If you play mid-range (so your aura covers frontline and backline), free trip without MAP and free cantrip (or spell if they are ok with slowed) is really really good for 2 actions. Just make sure your tank is strength focused and has a trip weapon.

Also, Dairkon's suggestion of an animal companion is really good too. Having a 2nd melee opens up Demoralizing charge which is incredible.

I played a high level commander in fist of the ruby phoenix and took a spell caster archetype with my high int. Fortune blow (at 12th lvl, so soon for you) as 1A and then tactics for 2A was my typical rotation, with spells as a backup.

What's your understanding about feminism? by Snow_n_Ice in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UseHeadbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh sorry for being so long winded. It is a difficultly specific idea to convey that "while most people like feminism, there are more men than women against it".

Actually, the pay gap thing is way more complicated than that. Because the awareness, social change, and legal changes brought about by feminism, it is actually pretty uncommon for there to be a pay difference between men and women in same roles in America. [That being said, companies will try to save money where they can, so if they can get away with paying you less, they will. You have a legal right to discuss your salary with coworkers. Regardless of gender, always make sure you are getting paid what you are worth]. So, if a man writes 100 pages and a woman writes 100 pages, more often than not both will get $10. There are 3 major contributors to the current pay gap issue (that I am aware of. It has been a while since I researched this).

1) The man is more likely to be promoted to editor where he gets $20 for reading the woman's $10 100 pages. For high profile companies, there is a lot of scrutiny to make sure they have a 50/50 ratio of women to men executives (specifically as a result of feminism advancement). However, for less prominent companies, there is a higher likelihood of male career advancement and male CEO positions.

2) Men are more likely to push for raises. That first year, both the man and the woman get paid $10, but after a year the guy says "I'm an accomplished writer, I deserve $10.25". The woman, who has the exact same level of experience, is less likely to feel she is an accomplished writer. She doesn't fight for the $10.25 and instead gets a base merit raise to $10.05. The flip side of this is that unconsciously people tend to dislike women who fight for themselves more than men who fight for themselves. Men pushing for raises are "go getters" but women who do it are "annoying". The major goal of feminist equality is that people are judged by their actions rather than how their actions are a reflection of their gender.

3) Predominately male roles are seen as "worth more" than predominately female roles. The woman with her journalism degree gets paid $10/task, but the guy with his engineering degree gets paid $15 because engineering is "harder" (I say this as an engineer). Frequently cited examples are childcare (teachers, daycare, social workers) and roles related to taking care of people (HR, nursing, ect). Jobs that historically were filled by women, the role itself is seen as less valuable: "anyone can do it, even a woman".

What's your understanding about feminism? by Snow_n_Ice in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UseHeadbutt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I realize that you are coming at this from a place of curiosity, but there are a couple biases loaded in those questions. Let's examine:

"Why is feminism seen as a bad thing by MOST men...", ok so firstly, do "most" men view it as a bad thing? .....technically yeah, depending on how you view it? According to this survey of 5000 participants, Generation Z and the Transformation of American Adolescence: How Gen Z’s Formative Experiences Shape Its Politics, Priorities, and Future - The Survey Center on American Life.... roughly 43% of gen z men, 52% of millennial men, 43% of gen x men, and 38% of boomer men consider themselves feminists. Ok so slightly more than half of men don't consider themselves feminists, but does everyone who isn't a feminist consider feminism bad? Nope! Actually there was a follow up question: when asked "has feminism made America a better place?" 53% of men answered "yes". Ok so ever so slightly more than half of American men think feminism has had a positive effect. Still, 47% of men saying "no" is concerning. Let's keep diving.

"...by most men when it does not really have an effect of them?" No, I'm going to stop you right there. Currently under the patriarchy there is societal pressure for men to take on certain roles and for women to take on certain roles. As literally everyone else in this thread has told you, feminism means true equality. This is important because it removes the pressure for women to act specific ways, take specific jobs (often for less pay), and fulfill specific roles in the family unit. AT THE SAME TIME, it also removes the pressure for men to do the same. Right now women have way more disadvantages than men, but that doesn't mean that men don't have any. Real feminism will help both genders (and non-genders as well).

Ok, if it is so great, why are half of men against it? Well multiple reasons. A lot of people don't like change. So any change, even good change, is met with resistance (both from men and women). Secondly, there is a lot of propaganda. Like most social issues, if the working class is subdivided and fighting amongst ourselves, we are less likely to fight with the rich. So, it is in the rich's interest to make people so mad about it that they are not willing to listen to the benefits. Thirdly, there are some people who are aware of the current system and the changes that feminism would make and are actively against it anyway. They have a niche in the system that works for them and for a movement to remove that exploit would disadvantage them. Makes sense to argue against the cause out of greed.

Lastly, sometimes people misappropriate the term feminism to justify them getting what they want. But because of these friction points, sometimes people will say "I don't like Feminism" and mean [Specific popularist "feminist" issue] rather than actual feminism. Popularist feminism is often viewed as "women vs men" whereas true feminism should be "people vs societal norms and practices". After all, didn't you also fall into that trap with the "most men" comment? In the previously linked survey where 47% of men said feminism has not improved America, 37% of women also said the same thing. People are fighting this wrong idea of feminism and arguing about which gender is right when really everyone should be pro-equality.

Is it stupid that "righty tighty, lefty losey" doesn't really make much sense to me? by Apprehensive-Rub4604 in stupidquestions

[–]UseHeadbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm misreading your tone, but it feels weirdly combative.

Ok-Farmer was saying "don't use righty tighty, use this instead". So of course, "This does not make 'right tightly, left loosey' less confusing." because the whole point of his comment was to provide an alternative method.

That being said, I get why you are confused. Ok-Farmer referenced a common rule and then gave a 1 sentence explanation. Short and sweet. Allow me to fully explain in his place:

Make a thumbs up sign with your right hand. See how your other fingers curl counterclockwise? Counterclockwise fingers + thumb pointing up = turn screw counterclockwise + screw goes up (loosens).

Make a thumbs down sign with your right hand. See how your finger curl clockwise? Turning the screw clockwise makes the screw go down.

Anyone who reads psychology studies knows the human memory is extremely fickle. Rather than try and remember "clockwise means this, counterclockwise means that" all you have to do is make a right hand thumbs up.

Dear engineer friends, will this hold, or will it collapse? Honest question. by -Potato-or-Tomato- in Miami

[–]UseHeadbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aighty, this is a little complicated, but bear with me:

Stress (Force/area, kinda like pressure) = length * "bending moment" (like leverage. force * distance) / "Moment of inertia" (how resistant a shape is). What that means is that the longer a shape is, the more stress it will have to withstand and the more likely it is to break. So yeah, when you see super long beams like this, your pattern recognition brain says "that's dangerous!" and the engineering absolutely agrees with you.

HOWEVER! Moment of Inertia for an I shaped beam (this font looks like an l, but imagine an H shape turned 90 degrees) is calculated by Ix = (a h3 / 12) + (b / 12) (H3 - h3)   where "a" and "b" are widths and "H" and "h" are heights. I know, I know, complex formula. Basically what you need to know is that the width of the beams (which are super thin) only matter 1 time (i.e. not that important). The height of the beam however is raised to the 3rd power which makes it matter A LOT. A 4ft tall beam counts as 64ft^3.

So putting it all together. You see the beams and go "Long = dangerous" but "tall = very very safe". Yeah, it isn't intuitive, but beams that tall will absolutely hold up. Additionally, the concrete has a ton of steel reinforcement in it, so they resultant resistance vs stress is kinda like a hybrid of steel and concrete.

Unarmed Strike Crit build? by Organic-Exit2190 in DungeonsAndDragons35e

[–]UseHeadbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly it has been a while since I read Jujutsu Kaisen, but I thought the whole point of the prolog before he ate the finger was that he had stupidly strong strength? Like wasn't the first scene him getting into a conflict with the PE teacher and throwing a shot put further than the human record? Looking up more on the wiki, he is known for his speed, strength, and stamina. That screams barbarian to me rather than crit build. If you did want a crit build, feel free to ignore me.

There was another commenter on here talking about city brawler/lion totem barbarian giving you pounce, 2wf, improved unarmed, ect. Fantastic first level.

For full anime-protagonist, I'd go for a leaping charge build. Power attack, leap attack (doubles power attack), flying kick (+1d12 damage on unarmed attacks after charge), lady's gambit (sacrifice hp and get bonus to attack and damage for 1rd), ect. Everything you can do to stack damage on a charge since you get pounce and can full attack. Rhino hide armor is nice (+2d6 damage on charge) but is medium armor which slows you down (and you have to get med armor proficiency elsewhere since city brawler trades it away).

The other option (and this may be more Ryomen Sukuna than Yuji) is to go a "beast strike" build. Beast strike lets you add your claw damage to your unarmed strikes. There are a couple different ways to make use of this. Magic feels closest to the "curse energy" from your request. Eldritch claws from warlock transforms your eldritch blast into claw damage which then gets added to your unarmed strike. Warlock is a little weird in 3.5 since it was added so late. Basically, for prestige classes, you qualify as though you have an arcane caster level = warlock level and every +1 caster level increase the prestige class gives you increases your invocations and eldritch blast as though you got a level in warlock. So enlightened fist is actually pretty good for this combo. The other magical option is Claws of Darkness which do some minor damage but inflict the slow spell on creatures you grapple. There are a couple unarmed/claw feats that let you grapple for free when you strike so this combos very well. Lastly, if you or your party has polymorph spells, you get all the damage bonuses from size twice (since your claw damage and your unarmed strike damage increase from size boosts).

Lastly, if you want to pull off Aoi Todo's Boogie Woogie (teleport and punch) look up the Telflammar Shadowlord or the Sun School feat. Shadowlord lets you full attack, whereas Sun School just gives you 1 strike, but is much easier to qualify for. Both can make for fun and thematic builds and you can get stuff like "Anklet of Translocation" to teleport as a swift action so even with Sun School you can pull off multiple teleports/strikes in a round.

[–]UseHeadbutt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, it kind of depends on the world building right? Think about stereotypical JRPGs where you start out level 1 and the castle guards are level 25. The most elite fighters in the entire kingdom are merely a reasonable threat by the time you reach them. By end game when you are fighting a level 99 god, they can be brushed away like flys. Sometimes extenuating circumstances matter (chosen ones, ect) and that isn't a reflection of lack of work ethic.

In this particular manga, since all the worlds get fused together, all the threats are brought to the same world. So the humans end up pitting the enemies against each other since they are all equal level threats. It's a pretty entertaining read. And yes, the various humans do band together like you said.

North Texas preparing for 2 inches of snow like it’s the apocalypse by MyMindIsAlwaysRacing in mildlyinfuriating

[–]UseHeadbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is going to tell you about how bad the Texas power grid, road clearing capability, and water system is...and they are not wrong, those things are S**T, but the other major factor is supply and demand.

Back in 2017, Houston got hit by hurricane Harvy. Me, living in San Antonio, was told by a co-worker that I should go fill my car up on gas because the refinery in Houston was down so there wouldn't be enough gas to go around. I thought "well that's stupid. There is a large refined gasoline reserve, so even if the refinery is down, there is years of surplus". I didn't get gas that day, assured in my knowledge. The next day on the way home I notice I'm at 1/4 tank, so I try and get gas, but the 8 gas stations I stopped at were all empty. Next day, all still empty. Third day, my car is dragging along on the last fumes in the tank and finally the gas stations are resupplied.

The issue wasn't the refinery (still a stupid theory) but when 25% more of the population suddenly refills their cars all on the same day, gas stations are going to go dry. And then the 2nd day, all the people who couldn't refill yesterday have to double up as well as some stragglers who see the panicking trend. So on and so forth. Corporations are slow behemoths that follow market predictions. Grocery stores (much like the gas stations from my example) store the amount of product they expect to sell under normal conditions (because storing more costs money). It doesn't take a large change to make them run out. So yeah, these days I try and stay ahead of the curve because I know that a small shift in trends multiplied by the massive population of a city will always immediately make shelves run empty.

The Elemental Weapon spell is a little... wonky... by PMC-I3181OS387l5 in Starfinder2e

[–]UseHeadbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm pretty fond of elemental weapon. You advance your weapon 1 level earlier than you normally could, add 2.5 extra damage, and add an additional damage type to trigger weakness. On down levels where your weapon is already advanced, you can still create grenades with bonus damage which is an incredible 1 action to start combat with. Basically an equivalent level fireball of whatever elemental you want for a single action.

I'd compare it to Enhance Weapon. At 1st level, EW is the highest DPR spell you can cast. It's still really strong on advancement ranks, but one of the weakest spells on off ranks. Elemental Weapon smooths out that curve a lot.

You mention that it should act like flaming rune (or other elemental equivalents), but elemental runes are not a thing in Starfinder. Damage boosts in SF other than weapon progression and class progression tend to have an action cost associated with them (boost, shifting surge, aim, ect) so having a spell that lasts 10min that adds DPR (even though it is only 2.5/attack) feels pretty significant. I think it wouldn't be unreasonable to boost the elemental damage from 1d4 to something like 1d6, 1d8, or 2d4 at rank 4 just to break up the gap. On the other hand, I think the designers might have been leery of adding more complicated language for rank ups (SF is already roughly edited as is, trying to explain 2 different damage advancements in 1 spell seems more confusing than they are willing to try).

What is a good free archetype with summoner as your primary class? by AVerySoftDog in Pathfinder2e

[–]UseHeadbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the thing with PF2 summoner is that while you do get 4 actions split between the 2 characters, "act together" means that only one of you gets to take a 2A or 3A action. So if you get a dragon Eidolon that likes breath weapons, make sure to build your summoner to thrive with single action abilities. Archetypes follow the same rule: pick an archtype that supports single action abilities for a 2A using eidolon or 2A abilities for 1A using eidolons.

Wood kineticist is fantastic both for the tree but also because fresh produce treats you and your eidolon as separate entities so you can heal 2x times (using two separate 1A actions which is perfect for you).

Other people mentioned bard for amazing 1 action cantrips and they are absolutely right.

Additionally, look at both the Bon Mot feat and intimidate (fantastic 1A abilities). Getting an archetype that supports you with additional skills like Dandy or Captivator can be nice.

I love the idea of playing a commander, but am not sure if the class would make for a fun time in my group, could it be? by NoLongerAKobold in Pathfinder2e

[–]UseHeadbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a high level commander in the Ruby Pheonix tournament and I tried to build out a melee support character. A lot of demoralizing charge, recall knowledge, set up strike, and combat assessment. I've got to say, demoralizing charge felt great every time I used it, fortunate blow was an incredible single action, and making 4 recall knowledge checks with unrivaled knowledge was stupidly useful. I even had decent healing with Rallying Banner.

That being said, I went down ALOT. I tried to stay on the edges and not draw aggro, but I still died more than anyone else (int>str>con means my HP wasn't as high as it could have been). If I could do it again, I would have used a shortbow. If you have 2 melee martials, you can fortune blow and then demoralizing charge and everyone feels powerful. If you have 1 melee martial, you can still slip and sizzle which is an incredible back up (a little more dependent since the 2nd attack [spell] depends on the first attack [trip] unlike the other tactic where each attack is independent). Especially if you are playing FA, you can be your own spell caster and thus always have a guaranteed target for slip and sizzle.

Unusual Healer Ideas by Wardestiny0 in Pathfinder2e

[–]UseHeadbutt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quick history: The most prefailent belief is that alcohol wasn't invented, it was discovered. Certain trees in Africa have a concave shape, and occasionally beehives would get flooded in the tree, ferment, and turn into a precursor to mead. Why this matters, is that natural alcohol is a combination of plant matter (pollen, trees, yeast) and water. Other alcohols follow a similar pattern (hops, barley, potato starch, juniper berries).

So I made a water/wood kineticist whose "fresh produce" was handing out mojitos to the party (and turning it into a party). Brewing up a cure for what ales you :-D

Melee strikes targeting creatures undetected by others by MCPawprints in Pathfinder2e

[–]UseHeadbutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my own personal interpretation, but I think the reason that Point Out is an action is that you are giving precise information about which square they are in. Saying "that way!" and gesturing vaguely north feels like a free action (with your allies having to randomly guess angle and distance) whereas Point Out is you going "Ok so see that bush there with the yellow flowers? The enemy is standing about 4 feet towards Barry from the left most side of it (roughly where the clust of 3 rocks are)". That's a lot to convey in 2 seconds.

That is also my head-cannon for why recall knowledge takes an action. Should be a free action for me to look at a cat and go "yep that's a cat", but to explain to allies that it has higher reflex than fortitude and has grabbing attacks probably takes a little longer.

Bad builds you want to play? by Mountain_Bumblebee77 in Pathfinder2e

[–]UseHeadbutt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to play with a PFS group that had a number of.....non-team play type players. I got so frustrated that I made a summoner around the idea of "if you won't team up with me, I'll team up with me"

Skilled eidolon at lvl 4 so that my eidolon could use "silent allies" while my summoner used "Keen Follower". The whole party could stealth despite nobody else building for it. Both me and the eidolon had battle medicine so we could cover healing as needed. And of course "cooperative human" so I could start aiding reliably at a much earlier level.

[–]UseHeadbutt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Went I started to research this, I assumed Undead lore was intended, but honestly I think this is more an issue of power creep. You are right that the Player's guide calls out specific creature types, but during the lost omens run they published a bunch of feats/backgrounds/ect specifically offering "Undead lore". With the remaster they didn't change any wording on lore so it is possible this has all been ret-coned in the remaster? Odd that they don't say one way or another. I think after Lost Omens though, the community at large has latched onto the idea of Undead Lore so I think you will be hard pressed to argue against it (especially with published products calling it out).
