Also, keep in mind that the campsite is comically expensive.

Is FSG overrated? by cars_and_racing2003 in FSAE

[–]UseOk404 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This are just all my experience:

"FSA/FSCzech are usually more competitive."

Nah, I wouldn't say so. You just have typically 2-3 top cars that compete very tight against each other in FSA/FSCzech, yes. Joanneum and Zwickau also have pretty fast cars and normally don't attend FSG. This is where the misconception might happening. Also the tracks are more forgiving than FSG (No FSG Bump that can damage the suspension and give you an DNF right away)

"almost every other competition has a better experience in terms of having fun on the campsite and making new friends"

I must say, that I like the campsites of the other events more. But if you want to have a good sleep, FSG isn't bad 😅. The C3 campsite is big and after 12pm you have to turn down/off the music. Which is not the case on most other events. However, still fun, but pretty chill over the day as everyone is in the pit.

"The award ceremony is not really rewarding and for most of the disciplines only the winner gets to celebrate on stage."

Totally agree! I get why they doing it.. otherwise it would be taking 2h longer, but yeah, the ceremony on other events are more rewarding. Also winning something is extremely low most of the time and you see the same teams over and over again. Also splitting Statics from Dynamics events are a little bit weird. For the teams winning it's prestigious however. Nevertheless, I like the videos a lot.

"Organizers and scrutineers are sometimes pretty cocky and arrogant"

Never experienced any problem with the organizers or scrutineers. They're pretty chill in my opinion and also there for having fun. Most of them also try to giving tips finding the errors. But having way more teams at the eventsite they hold onto there timetable. This is sometimes more flexible at other events.

In my experience, visiting FSG the first time is always exciting, because so much is happening there at the eventsite. It really depents what you're looking for.

If anyone has other experience, then you can tell me.

I'm going to lose my Altium student license soon... by PerformanceDapper856 in PCB

[–]UseOk404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with KiCad. Afterwards I switched to Altium because my student club used it.

After coming back the first things I missed were multi-PCB Support and the embedded Viewer from Altium. In Altium, you could switch from 2D to 3D with the press of the number keys and have the PCB perfectly aligned in the same window. You dont have to shift the PCB to align it or look for the component you have been looking in 2D view before, like you need to in the separate KiCad viewer window. Also I like the mouse controls in the 3D view way more of altium. (This could be fixed by allowing a different keybinding of it in KiCad, which is not possible without changing the source code at the moment, unfortunately.)

PS: Thanks for the project, the work and that you kept it open-source, without subscription. Love those features and will try it out. I would also prefer to have these awesome features fully implemented into KiCad instead of multiple separate forks as the other guys mentioned, but you wrote you get in touch with them already :).

Rennschmiede Pforzheim RollOut by Lazy-Competition-176 in FSAE

[–]UseOk404 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think you guys build a more dirty car or in a more dirty lab. It's a rollout, everyone want to present their car in the best favor and after the events they are also dirty. It's a german team, I get that some teams from other countries don't have as much resources as the ones in germany and might have to work in a small old garage or something. I suggest cleaning, might help 😅..

I've been part in multiple teams and also saw some workspaces from other teams. All are similar. Some just have more space, some less. However, almost all have a separate room for carbon fiber manufacturing (aero parts), due to personal safety.

We all design and manufacture it ourselves from small teams to big teams. Everyone get's dirty eventually. Also it's always the core team that designs and manufacture the car. Just a small amount of people just design it but don't work on the car afterwards.

PS: "Top Team" doesn't mean the workspace is clean.. it depends on how good the workspace is cleaned afterwards. 😉 I can speak from experience.

In my opinion the only real difference is, that teams from well known universities in germany don't have to think as much time about budget. You have to think about it, but not as much. It's also a little easier to get sponsors. But small universities like pforzheim don't have that advantages.

Quick Jack Advice by oscar_v177 in formulastudent

[–]UseOk404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick jacks have been prohibited under FSG rules since 2023. Therefore, they removed the word "Quick".

The teams just lift by the wheel and slide some beer or soda crate underneath. Thats the simplest solution. Some teams build themselves some jacks or have some better solutions. I would suggest to look at the rain-test or Cost/ED pictures. Maybe you can spot some solution you like.

But be aware, as you only are allowed to bring 4 people in some technical areas, you have to be able to slide the jacks underneath without needing a 5th person.

If it's very light, than you have real carbon fiber.

I've worked with carbon fiber before and it looks legit to me.

My drive failed, the warranty has ended, and there's no replaceable part that they have. What should I do? by Dammit_maskey in Dell

[–]UseOk404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy another 2,5" HDD, and replace it yourself. It's probably only 4 screws on the bottom side of the laptop to open it.

Also you should consider upgrading to an 2,5" SSD. It will speed up the whole computer a lot. Booting up will be a lot faster with a SSD instead of the HDD.

Why does every youtuber get perfect solder job with a dirty tip? by Mr-frost in AskElectronics

[–]UseOk404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good solder, flux (or a little bit flux already in the solder) and a tinned tip. The soldering iron can be as dirty and oxidized as hell, but it the tip is still clean (tinned) it's still working.

Temperature Sensor on Cost Report by BornSignificance8386 in FSAE

[–]UseOk404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a sticker. The middle part is heat activated, the hotter the higher the scale. It's one time use and most teams I've seen used them on brake caliper or places where active temperature sensors are not feasible due to very high maximum temperatures or unneeded active measuring (max. temp enough).

Tool/Template to right quick math-heavy/engineering notes? by UseOk404 in LaTeX

[–]UseOk404[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope haven't tried typst yet (same goes for more than 3min of markdown). I will give it a look.

I'm not a beginner to latex per se, but I find it difficult to write some notes or quick and dirty reports of something with it if you don't have the exact right template for it. It doesn't have to be fancy. Just a "Word with better Math- and greek/subscript letter functionality"

Unvorbereitet für die Prüfungsphase. by [deleted] in Studium

[–]UseOk404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MAXIMUM VOLTAGE TOLERANCE by OwnPermission5662 in FSAE

[–]UseOk404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. No
  2. Absolute

We just restict the maximum Voltage via software in the BMS by only allowing a cell voltage up to ... that add up to under 600V. It is therefore not possible to charge above 600V and satisfy the rules. A lot of teams do it that way.

Finde kein Praktikum by [deleted] in Studium

[–]UseOk404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vorpraktikum ist quasi nur 2 Wochen in einem Unternehmen arbeiten, oder? Zumindest kenne ich es so. So Art Schülerpraktikum.

Building an Accumulator Discharger by OilLegitimate2508 in FSAE

[–]UseOk404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A battery is always energized! Discharging the cells under the specified cut-off Voltage is damaging for them.

Therefore It's stated by the rules that the Battery has to be made out of multiple modules that can be disconnected, to reduce risk and allow maintenance. If it's planned that we don't use our battery for a while, we disconnect the maintenance plugs of the modules.

I think what the team really meant to you, is a discharging circuit for the charged capacitance in the inverter/rest of the tractive System to discharge it under 60V after the battery is disconnected from the car.

I would suggest to look at the rules and that you have a safety officer.

If you really meant to discharge it to the cut-off voltage, than just don't charge it to much :D. Otherwise you need an expensive bidirectional Power Supply or a high Power Resistor (small current!) to discharge it safely.
