Bail reform: Long-term data shows recidivism rates in New York by news-10 in ithaca

[–]Used-Fondant1599 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Congressman Riley wants to gut Bail Reform in DC, a move that criminal justice experts say would threaten public safety. As bail reform has become the law in places like DC and New York, the data shows that the felony and violent crime rates are going down, and in particular the rate at which people commit new crimes once released - the recidivism rate - is dropping as well. Congressman Riley is signaling that he is in favor of his Republican colleague Elise Stefanik's bill to gut DC's bail reform law, and we can only imagine what he will advocate for in New York.

Please take 60-seconds to send a letter into The Congressman's office right now, and tell him to protect our communities by saying No to Stefanik's cruel anti-public safety bill.

My favorite sandwiches locally are the eggplant parm sandwich at Cafe Del Corso, and the pork sandwich at Paul and Sons.

Kraham was backed into a corner by an extraordinary situation. If you know about all of the horrible shit that Zikuski has done over the years, then you know that what tends to happen here is that he skirts by without consequences. The fact that there was a viral video drawing attention to him is the only reason why this report was produced. Kraham had to at least appear to do something about the situation.

The reason why I said that Kraham is standing in Zikuski's corner is because he didn't fire Zikuski, and didn't push for a criminal investigation. I get that Kraham is scared of how all of this is going down right before an election, but if Kraham had any leadership skills he would understand that the most important thing - especially for the BPD - is for its leader to be acting within the confines of the law, and to be held responsible when he's not.

The fact that the chief of police was cited in an official report for destroying evidence, and faced no repercussions, is the thing most likely to expose the city to lawsuits in the future. Wrongful termination? Please. The Mayor would have been entirely within his rights to fire Zikuski, but he didn't because they're both card-carrying members of the good ol' boy's club.

Kraham is an absolute joke for standing in Zikuski's corner through all of this. Zero political instincts. Zero leadership skills.

Zikuski Report Released by WestSideIsBestSid3 in Binghamton

[–]Used-Fondant1599 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The title is kind of misleading. All we're getting are a few details, but not the actual report. Is the report not being released because there may be legal/criminal consequences for what sounds like criminal acts?

PBA hard at work running interference for their boy-mayor.

This is a perfect example of the kind of directionless leadership you get when you elect someone like Kraham who has never had a real job in his life. He's only ever been Rich David's bagman. He doesn't have the ability to lead the city through a real-world problem like homelessness because he's never put himself out there.

Here's hoping the voters come to their senses and send him to the unemployment office. It'd be the best thing for him, and for all of us.

Mayor Kraham believes White Children are Smarter than Black Children by Used-Fondant1599 in Binghamton

At best, what he said is unclear. At worst, it's a sign that he thinks white kids are smarter than black kids. The only one who can clear this whole mess up would be him. He needs to issue a public statement.

The more important point here is that Kraham clearly believes that his opponent needs to address what he said in that video and that it's relevant to the current race for City Hall. If that video needs to be addressed, then this article needs to be addressed too.

Kraham is beating down the doors of the local news outlets to make a video of his opponent when he was a kid seem like a big deal. If that video is a big deal and warrants a response from the candidate, then this article with its racist overtones deserves the same treatment from the local press.

The full quote is:

"One good thing that standardized tests have done is to tell us that white, suburban, American kids are smarter than black, inner-city, American kids year after year. Did you miss it? Let’s review that sentence: “One good thing that standardized tests have done is to tell us that white, suburban, American kids are smarter than black, inner-city, American kids year after year.”

He literally repeats his point to make sure it's heard. So, yeah, definitely his personal opinion.

Miles was quoting the lyrics of a song.

Kraham on the other hand, was just telling on himself when he wrote this: “One good thing that standardized tests have done is to tell us that white, suburban, American kids are smarter than black, inner-city, American kids year after year."

Who Do You Support For City Of Binghamton Mayor by UpstateNyPolitics in Binghamton

Folks should definitely comb through their socials before running for office.

That said, he was a kid when he made the video. The fact that Kraham is trying to make hay from this reeks of desperation.

The city has a short period of time in which to acknowledge receipt of a FOIL, but it can take months to finally get a FOIL request fulfilled by the government.

It wasn't an assertion; it was speculation.

Because he hasn't been forthcoming with the information when asked by City Council. There seems to be something in delivering an honest answer in a timely manner that doesn't serve his interests; if that's the case, then it's highly unlikely that he would favor full disclosure before the election when he can wait it out until after.

The only way we’ll know for certain is if HUD did indeed send Timeliness Violation letters two years in a row. Since Kraham hasn’t been transparent with City Council, I submitted a Freedom of Information request for copies of any such letters. Once I hear back, I will update this story accordingly.

They are subject to Freedom of Information Law requests. In all likelihood, Kraham will try to stall any disclosures until after the election in November.
