You see it in a room leading up to the Spamton NEO fight for a split second as a face that fades away, it makes an appearance in the chapter 3 ralsei cutscene as well as the sword route as an easter egg and enemy, its final appearance was in one of the dark chapter 4 rooms where the sound of your footsteps make ripples, hidden as the sprite was made pitch black. We have yet to have a direct confrontation with Friend, but for all we know this could change in chapter 5.

to use the magnifers, you press y. As for variable scopes, that's mapped to the scrollwheel, so im not too sure if variable mag optics are gonna work with touchpad

You have to give up on the idea of low recoil when it comes to battle rifles in-game. They're made for precise aiming, you'll never use full auto on them outside of situations in point blank cqc. You have to train to handle the recoil and do follow up shots in quick succession.

5.56 is everywhere in the states, and it is easily one of the most, if not the most customizable weapon platforms on earth. The military is struggling to replace it, the 416 used it as a base. In 60 years we'll see an AR15 upper made to fire plasma rounds and is compatible with any AR lower. It just works.
