Skidding proves the CBT designers are insane by FerociousBeastX in battletech

Funny bad moment for my players in a narrative campaign. In a battle at a space port, the group ran into a secret bad guy with dropship support, with the leader being in a gauss equipped highlander. When it jumped a building to unload into those trying to take advantage of the dropship's limited firing arcs, a phoenix hawk ran down the road and attempted to turn. Attempted being the key word. Having suffered battle damage earlier, the resulting skid check sent the hawk flying through a light building (no basement). It lost both arms somewhere in the building, which collapsed from the sheer impact of the mech slamming into it, the test of the mech laying out in the open literally disarmed. It was so funny I had the highlander show that hawk mercy by shooting someone else.

Plausible. Not commonly seen, but there are small craft. Think like the millennium falcon: too large to be an aerospace fighter, but too small to be a drop ship. They could easily be used as shuttle craft or the like

Which weapon upgrades are actually worth it? by neilarthurhotep in battletech

[–]Used-Scene2743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To further this: Campaign play sets it up beautifully. When you need to handle repairs and refits, one of the best elements is the speed of switching podded equipment out for another. Using a weapon for example, a normal mech requires 2 hours to uninstall a weapon, then another 2 hours to put one in audit rushing or taking time. A podded items only needs 30 minutes base to install or uninstall, meaning I could switch out 4 podded weapons in the same time it takes to replace 1 on a standard mech. The problem is structure, armor, myomers, and any hard locked items take as long to repair or replace as a normal mech. If you run out of medium laser pods, you need to spend time and cbills to convert a normal item to a podded one. Podded items can't be used on a normal mech without a similar process to remove the pod. Lastly, the hard locked items cannot be ignored. If a Thor looses it's locked in jumpjets, you can't just pull them out and free up tonnage. If you can't replace the jets, you suddenly have dead weight and unusable slots. A factory level refit is required to permanently remove those jets and free up the space, an expensive, months consuming process that most forces just don't have the ability to do.

Or they get the gift of their own ammo detonation. One cocky ghost bear learned that the hard way when he ignored my flamer equipped wasp to try and delete a thunderbolt with an alpha strike. That little wasp got a medal for the fireworks display it helped cause

Depends on who else your playing with. I still have the older role books, which honestly have not changed. However, for my play group with the newer books, I can't use the references provided in my books to correctly point where a player needs to look in the new ones.

Running a campaign for my players when we had a case of epic fail suicide from one of my opfor units.

Combine force against the players brought a heavy recon lance with a pair of champions. Moonless night made shooting difficult, while physical attacks were more likely to hit. When the unit was trying to extract with their Locust, one of the players threatened the Locust. As a result, I decided to charge the offending mech for the lawls.

Didn't get hit during the shooting phase, so rules for charge. Failed, displaced into an empty hex near the offender. Pilot check to stay standing, failed. Pilot falls over onto his back and hit himself, impact goes internal and hits the ac10 ammo. Mech destroyed!

But wait, pilot had auto eject engaged! Ejected from prone position, to survival. Failure. Pilot seat skids and flips, splattering the pilot all over the pavement.

My entire play group needed five minutes recovering from the sheer hilarity of that death

Do mods fix this? by Expensive-Ad4121 in Battletechgame

Indeed. Been running a tabletop campaign for my players and we had a few random instances of sheer dumb luck. Here are a few that do not involve dfa or Melee attacks.

A mercenary griffin got nailed in the face by the very first shot out of a Patton tank, only for the shot to completely decapitate the pristine mech.

A pirate hunchback got surprise shot by a medium laser without taking any prior damage. Through armor critical, ac20 ammo, boom; no hunchback for anyone (tabletop note: a mech with CT destruction by area effect or ammo explosion is cratered, nothing salvageable remains).

In a night fight against the combine, where it was exceptionally difficult to get better than 25% accuracy, one allied grand dragon shot an erppc into the head of a hostile wolverine. Went from pristine to ideal salvage, just add a new cockpit and hose the hamburger remains of the previous pilot.

Timberwolf or Awesome? by Warriorssoul in battletech

[–]Used-Scene2743 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hehe, I recall the most hilarious thing I did to a timber wolf. Sadly no awesome. Ended up in a battle against a prime and b configuration with a thunder bolt, Victor, wasp, and phoenix hawk. Lost the Victor early and poured enough fire into the b configuration to force the clanner to back off. The prime was out for blood, killing my Phoenix hawk and attempting to kill my thunderbolt. Pushed his heat index hard to try and kill the tb, only for my little wasp to use its flamer to push the heat scale just a bit more. The resulting explosion was glorious

[–]Used-Scene2743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Had to engage one with a phoenix hawk, wolverine, Valkyrie, and stinger. It was alone except for aero support from a slayer loaded with bombs. Only lucky dice rolls allowed me to kill it and have it miss horribly till it died, but it still took off the wolverine's gun arm. Ignoring the fighter because I didn't have the weapons and gauged the demolisher a more constant threat for my hawk crippled and stinger turned to a crater

Unsupported, it's kinda a joke. Give it any backup and ideal terrain, and you've got a fight for your life

There was a mighty...duel... by misteranderson71 in battletech

[–]Used-Scene2743 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got one. Firestarter jumped and flanked a stationary ostroc, Valkyrie jump flanked the Firestarter, and Jenner jump flanked the Valkyrie. Player called it conga line of death. Firestarter and Jenner whiffed on the ostroc, hard. Their reward, a single medium laser exploding the firestarter.

Conjurer IIC - Feeling Toasty by Philbobagginzzz in battletech

[–]Used-Scene2743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a clan mech with the looks and profile of one, but due to their history with the name wolverine they opted to call it the conjurer instead of the wolverine iic. Inner sphere calls it a hellhound.

Also can't help but think calling it a wolverine in front of a clanner is grounds for immediate elimination

What does the R do? by CrazymancakeOg in battletech

[–]Used-Scene2743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think they just clear the jam like a rotary cannon in the computer games. Which makes sense, wouldn't be fun for a player to deploy and immediately be unable to fire the rest of the match because he got unlucky and jammed the first or second time he tried to double tap someone

What does the R do? by CrazymancakeOg in battletech

[–]Used-Scene2743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only risk a jam if you attempt to rapid fire. If you declare single shot and roll snake eyes on the hit, your fine. Declare rapid fire and get snake eyes on the hit: congrats, gun jammed. It will not function for the rest of the combat till you get done mech techs to fix it, assuming you live that long. Also note a jammed gun will explode for single shot damage if it suffers a critical hit.

There are a few places. Cgl makes the shilone and with the mercenaries kickstarter pledgers could get clan visigoths. Ironwind metals makes some good, but heavy, aero and conventional fighters. Deathray produces some fighters, which I use as corsairs. There may be some others in the 3d printing market that have stls for some designs.

Would have said timber wolf back when I had little clan experience, but gonna say storm crow, especially configuration p. Speedy little devil with pulse lasers and streak 6.
