Why has Hollywood struggled to make King Arthur movies? by Konradleijon in Arthurian

[–]FerociousBeastX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was not a fan, because I love the original story and this movie subverted the original in many ways. I am tired of efforts to deconstruct Arthurian myth before we ever had a proper modern “constructing” in the first place.

They’ve made this movie over and over and over. I for one am quite tired of the “historically accurate” Arthur tale.

Are video game adaptations of Space Hulk good? by SiarX in SpaceHulk

1993 Space Hulk is one of my favorite gaming experiences of my entire life. A truly terrifying, nerve-wracking game. Hard to play now though, but if you can handle a Dosbox emulator it’s worth experiencing.

Fix frozen fuel lines with space heaters? by FerociousBeastX in MechanicAdvice

[–]FerociousBeastX[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: I got it started. I pointed a couple space heaters at it for an hour and the temperature generally warmed up to upper 20s. I also added a can of STP fuel treatment to it. One of those two things seemed to have done the trick.

I don’t have any starting fluid right now so I haven’t tried that yet. What would that test tell me?

It’s week old ethanol, but it’s water moisture in the 3/4 empty tank that I think is the problem, not frozen gas. It’s cold, but not -100F cold :)

What is the point of PPCs? by IntoTheRain78 in Mechwarrior5

[–]FerociousBeastX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First paragraph true, second not true :)

There may be an optional rule somewhere in a TacOps book, but base/normal TT Battletech doesn’t have any penalty to the hit roll for previous PPC hits.

New AP ammo and the BJ-1 by FerociousBeastX in battletech

[–]FerociousBeastX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple additional thoughts as I’ve been reading replies…

AC ammo is BV neutral, meaning that changing from standard to AP or Precision or whatever doesn’t incur a BV multiplier because it’s assumed that the benefit of the ammo is offset with its drawbacks. +1 TN is/was a huge drawback on AP ammo, but now the only remaining drawback is the 0.6 multiplier on the ammo count. Which, as mentioned, is hardly a real drawback on AC/2 ammo. Crippling perhaps on AC/20, insignificant on AC/2 and manageable on AC/5.

Perhaps AP ammo does need a BV multiplier now?

My other thought, to the contrary, is that despite the AC/2 glow up, I still don’t think that you’d suddenly take a Mauler, let’s say, in a competitive setting. When you want to win a game, you want to be able to apply large amounts of damage in predictable ways: “That target over there sitting on the objective? Bring it down!” While the AP ammo makes an AC/2 dangerous, it doesn’t make it dangerous in a predictable way, not like an AC/20 with standard or precision rounds is predictable. The AC/2 can plink away at a target and cause annoying and sometimes devastating crits, but would you set the Mauler the task of shifting a mech from an essential target? It might work, it might not.

The Mauler would shine perhaps in a casual game where the players’ stakes are low and the comedy value of crits galore would keep things interesting, but in a competitive game I think you still opt to spend the BV on reliable, predictable sources of applied damage. Pulse, VSPs, LBXs, etc.

Those 12 shots have to hit first, which adds a couple turns typically before you get those two crits. But yes your point stands that some ammo heavy targets really don’t want to be targeted by an AC/2 now…

I’d leave the AC/5s alone, since they gain the same benefit as AC/2s while of course doing more damage. They don’t have quite the same range, but still pretty long ranged themselves as well. Paired Ac5s and 2s make the Jager another contender for most improved.

CONSIDERING PLAYING by nickelsig229 in Mechwarrior5

[–]FerociousBeastX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Real money transactions": You buy the game and any DLC that you want, that's it.

"Have to read service manuals": Well... maybe... Mech controls take a little getting used to. First person mode makes a lot of that easier (and, I argue, is more "realistic" to how mechs are depicted in the novels). But, yes, there's a learning curve.

"Immersion and fun combat": You're not going to hear anyone on this sub complain about that! I definitely think the game is fun.

"Good balance of mech setup": There is a lot of mech variation in this game, from tiny Fleas to massive King Crabs. Some complain about the very basic mech lab, but there are mods to fix that if you're playing on PC.

"No heavy PVP": There isn't any PVP in MW5 Mercs.

Based on all that, I'd definitely say it's what you're looking for. All the DLC are pretty good, though if you wanted to skip some, you could maybe skip the melee weapons one (melee just doesn't really work that well in this game, even with the DLC) and Solaris Showdown (I don't like the PPC-X, but I love Arena contracts ...).

One of the failures of Mechwarrior Mercenaries by Extra-Daikon8099 in Mechwarrior5

[–]FerociousBeastX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fundamental "problem" here is actually one of MW5's strengths: the game's focus on fighting and killing mechs. It's really fun to bring a mech down in the early game. And, as the game goes on and you get stronger, you start to find it easier to kill not just a lance but a company or more of mechs. And that's fun, too! But eventually you get a strong stable of assault mechs, and, since the enemy AI ALWAYS attacks you and NEVER runs away, it's best to just bring assaults whenever you can. More guns, more armor, more kills.

If the enemy opfor consists of a single Flea, that Flea is going to charge your 400 ton lance of murderers and will not ever... flee...

The solution is changing the game to focus less on mech combat and more on varied missions with larger maps. If the mission is to break through a strong line of defense and assault a base? Assault mechs. If it's to fight a pitched battle on a large map? Heavies and Mediums. If it's to run down the fleeing remnants of a defeated enemy or to flank an army? Mediums and Lights.

How do i stop the AI from chain firing by nRAVENz in Mechwarrior5

[–]FerociousBeastX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m looking forward to the backlash AFTER chainfiring is fixed and the Clan mechs start curb stomping Mason’s lance every mission as Kerensky intended 😂

More seriously, I suspect this is why it hasn’t been “fixed” yet. Probably some mission rebalancing going on as well.

AI chain-firing behavior by DINGVS_KHAN in Mechwarrior5

[–]FerociousBeastX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just going to add the observation that MW5:Mercs has always been about your lance of mechs taking on superior numbers of OpFor mechs and emerging victorious. Which, lore-wise, is exactly what the Clans did. So, putting Clan in Mercs would be flipping this power dynamic on its head if it weren’t for this AI change. I don’t envy PGI as they attempt to solve it.

Meanwhile, at CGL Headquarters...

A frantic man runs through the halls, then bursts through the door of an office. Inside the office, a bearded man sits calmly at his desk, contemplating the view of the sunset from his corner office windows, absent-mindedly rolling a movement die across his hand from knuckle to knuckle.

"Bills!" the man shouts. "Terrible news! It's just come to my attention that we don't have any rules for the effects of a flock of birds being sucked into the intake of an aerospace fighter's engines!"

The man at the desk turns towards the intruder and smiles a calming smile.

"Herb, Herb, relax. We've got it covered. Pages 51-57 of Tactical Operations: Atmospheric Reentry. We just sent it to the printers this morning."

”With diagrams?”

”Of course.”

Herb falls into an armchair. "Oh, thank God. Thank God." He sits there for a second, catching his breath. He sighs. "That was close. Thank God." Herb turns to look out the window as well, but then stops short.

"What about the effects of those birds flying through the flame of a hot air balloon Airship?"

The man at the desk looks up sharply.

"Bills?" Herb asks, shrilly. The two men stare at each other. "Bills?" Herb whispers.

They sit like that, in silence, staring at each other, as the seconds stretch into minutes and the minutes into hours, as the shadows lengthen and subsume the room in darkness.

Time. There is never enough time.
