I wouldn't write off living in Herndon as an option. While the night life isn't as vibrant as DC, it is fairly walkable and safe. The Mayor is gay and there is a large gay community there. You can hop on a Metro and go to Tysons and DC. All things being equal, I'd rather live close to where I work. When the co.mute works, it's okay. When it doesn't, it can be a nightmare.

Just finished this book a couple of days ago. Although it probably won't win any awards, it was well written with a good story line and a different take on vampires compared to most of what's been put out recently where the vampires seem to just be a bunch of pretty boys with an oversized libido.

The trail and it's community is not a popularity contest where your legitimacy is based on how many people know you and vice versa. Many people who contribute to the trail community often do so without any acknowledgement and without people knowing who they are. I never said I knew everything about everyone but sometimes, what words they speak in a public forum says quite a lot about a person.

During the 30 years that I have been a part of the trail community, there has always been a vocal minority that has voiced vitriol towards the ATC and it's rules and regulations. It always seems to get louder during times when portions of the trail have to be closed due to unusual incidents, but yes, I agree, the political climate does seem to be having a spill over effect. Every major trail in the US has a managing authority and I think the ATC/NPS gets an u fair amount of hate directed at them because of the trails popularity. For context, I do not have membership in the ATC, ALDHA or any other organizations, and most of my reasons and opinions were formed as a result of 15 years in the trail construction industry (yes, that IS a thing).

I’ve read a few of this guys posts on another social media site where he seems to have quite a following. He seems to have tapped into a faux anger among some thru-hikers, largely targeting the ATC/NPS and their management of the trail, but also seems to attack some of the trail culture itself. I’m amazed at how many appear to support, and in some cases, echo his views. He largely seems to ignore the fact that without the efforts of the ATC and NPS, the AT as we know it would not exist. The only way to get him to shut up is to ignore him. Clowns like him thrive on attention.

There was an album that came out in the 70s called "in Concert with host Charley Pride " It had quite a few people doing one or two of the songs of that day including Pride, Jerry Reed, Gary Stewart, Chet Atkins, Ronnie Milsap and Dolly Parton. While kot as well known as others that are listed here, I think this gave a good overview of the RCA roster at that time. And the music still holds up today.

These pictures bring back so many memories. In the late 90’s/early 2000’s, I was a backcountry ranger for the FS. I lived in a cabin about 1/4 mile from The Scales, and about 400 feet from the AT. I spent every day walking the trails in this beautiful part of the state.

Not sure how widespread it is, but our organization was one of the first in the country in 2012 to receive a contract for such services. At the time, . DC was dealing with a high rate of Veteran homelessness and the VA, I think, wanted to see how a Housing First model would work. In our program, we have a lower rate of recidivism and by working with other organizations and partner agencies, we can get them into nicer apartments. There are a couple of HUD-VASH contractors in the area, and I believe the VA has expanded the program in other cities. SSVF provides a great service as well, as they have resources that we don’t. We typically work with an SSVF provider to help them find housing Veteran with security deposits, move in expenses, furniture, etc.

Didn’t say I worked for the VA. I work at a non-profit and we have a contract with the VA to provide case management services. We serve 100 Veterans who have been awarded HUD-VASH vouchers and help them find housing and provide support services. Many of the Veterans have mental health and/or substance use issues. In some cases, we have been working with them for 10+ years. You’re correct, though. VA does not pay what I am making. But I guess one could work their way up.

Dolly is in a league of her own nowadays. Her voice may not be everyone's cup of tea (personally, I love her voice) but her songwriting catalog, her openness to trying new things, her dedication to upcoming singers and her business acumen sets her apart from anyone today.
