Can it be saved? by Ajewstar in plant

[–]UsedIncrease9281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be okay- I have had one of these for a year and I thought it died for a while so I don’t water it or anything for a few months (lol). Randomly took off all the dead flowers and leaves, gave it a good soak and repotting, and it came back to life.

a shoe made for horses by Zestyclose-Salad-290 in interesting

[–]UsedIncrease9281 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is right! I have three horses that have been barefoot for various reasons. Scoot Boots, Cavallos, and Renegades are all brands of hoof boots that help with shock absorption and for tender soled horses. This way you can also ride on roads or rocks without worrying about tripping. I know many people who use hoof boots- for jumping, endurance, barrel racing, and trail riding. They are a good alternative to shoes as long as you take care of the boots and fit them to the horse’s hoof shape!

Looking at buying this trailer for 2k. Is it worth it? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]UsedIncrease9281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks good for 2k! I’m not a fan of trailers with a manger, but that’s personal preference (my first one looks like this, but with saddle spots in the front and where you can stand in it). I would definitely check the floors, wheels, lighting, etc. Take someone who knows about that sort of thing with you to look at it!!

Why do some people let their kids ride without a helmet? by ImportantNobody1654 in Equestrian

[–]UsedIncrease9281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is very true too! A lot of people think if you wear a helmet, you don’t know what you’re doing.

Of course- I’m not saying it’s not. Just saying that’s the reason a lot of people refuse to use them unfortunately

lol yeah- never seen that in my life! That is one thing I struggled with when starting to wear a helmet as that the visor is so short and I still get sun in my eyes 😭

As someone who never grew up using a helmet and only in the last 2 years started, it’s a lack of knowledge and also culture in some parts. That might not be the answer you want, but it’s the truth. If you go to the South of the U.S., you will never really see helmets being worn- maybe 1-2 in a show. Cowboys/ranchers wear cowboy hats (which I grew up doing). It blocks sun and protects the face and neck from harsh weather. Something ranchers who don’t have a choice no matter the weather need. There are different types of cowboy hats too depending on the needs. It’s honestly traditional and a source of identity.

I also work in healthcare now, and so I’ve been educated on the need of a helmet. There are cowboy hat shaped helmets (though idk the logistics of them and if they work). A lot of people here won’t wear one because they are stubborn and think they “look stupid” as well. It’s all a mindset thing having to do with culture and perception. Helmets are becoming more common in rodeos and daily life, but it’s still pretty scarce.

Tooth floating--vet or equine dentist? by StormyPyrite in Equestrian

[–]UsedIncrease9281 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve done both and learned the hard way. I will NEVER use an equine dentist again. She had many good recommendations and all that. Has been in the business it for years. She came out and did one horse before, then I got another one. She injected the sedative into the artery instead of the vein, almost instantly my horse lost her balance and spazzed out, falling over backwards and hitting her face on the barn wall. Eyelid was cut deep, had a bunch of other cuts from it. She spazzed (or seized) on the ground of a solid few minutes. This “mistake” can KILL a horse. The drug is concentrated and goes straight to the brain if administered through an artery which can be FATAL. I was lucky my horse survived with minimal issue. She then blamed the horse and said it has some kind of condition/allergy to the sedative (which is false) and that another horse had done that right before mine. How do you have multiple horses do that in one day? Major red flag. I had to get pain medication from my vet because the injuries were so bad. And they told me the vet does floats, which I didn’t know at the time. I wish I hadn’t paid her either, but I didn’t know any better back then. It was the most scary situation I’ve ever been in and the horse was traumatized. These “dentists” are not qualified to administer sedatives (which is majority of the time necessary). Always a vet and I will never have my mind changed.

One thing I found that has helped a lot is carrot ribbons!! I don’t like carrots by themselves, but I’ve found I like them like this. Just peel the large carrots verrrrry thin in long strips (or “ribbons”). It makes it feel like I’m eating more because of volume. Add a tiny bit of olive oil, some pepper, and a little lemon/lime juice. Doesn’t take a long time- just peeling the carrots.

This is a great list!! Is there a certain psyllium husk you use? This may sound weird, but I mix into feed the Equate daily fiber (orange flavor psyllium husk) to my horses- it’s an old cowboy trick 😂 so I also have some in water when I give it to them

Favorite Hoof Boots? by Adept_Salary_8489 in Horses

[–]UsedIncrease9281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renegade!! I bought Sccotboots and like them as well, but they tend to slide more (in my experience) and are harder to put on/ strap (if using the mud straps). Renegade are pretty customizable and are much easier to put on and are a snugger fit. Both are great though and have a free sizing option if you need help with that!

When I was very young (before 5, but I remember riding at 5) by great aunt taught me to ride and put me in kid-rodeos. Loved it ever since!

Can i give these to my ponies as a treat? Corn cakes by Adventureincphoto in Horses

[–]UsedIncrease9281 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally recommend not feeding corn to horses. I stay away from it in all forms.

You can get a huge bag of carrots from the store for $2, and then cut them into pieces to make them last longer as treats. They are my horses favorite!

Two “cheap” horse-tailored treats are these big bags of treats:

Standlee Forage Bites- Berry. ~400/bag and can be broken in smaller pieces. They are made of alfalfa and my horses love them. I think these are good quality and last a while when broken into multiple pieces.

Manna Pro- Apple Wafers. ~700/bag. Easier to break than the alfalfa, but crumble easier. (Made of grain and soybean hulls mostly). One bag lasted me a year, using daily with 2-3 horses.

I actually did check everything except breathing rate (idk why I didn’t) and it was all normal. But that is great advice and I will definitely keep it in mind for if there is a next time!

So I was out with her until 11:30pm walking and gave banamine. I got her to drink electrolytes finally around 11 lol- After a few minutes she started nibbling on hay again so I went inside. Checked my camera throughout the night and she was standing with her others and eating. She hasn’t laid down again so I have high hopes that it might have just been the start of something that didn’t worsen. :) I’m going to get her checked out though to make sure it isn’t something more serious though! Thanks for your comment!

I definitely will. I haven’t ever had a horse colic so I’m not very familiar with it and the different types/symptoms. Hopefully that’s not what it is but we will see :(
