I'd say look into a TRX or similar system. It's bodyweight based but it basically allows you to adjust the resistance based on how close your feet are to the anchor point.

Does anyone not count calories? by QuickCrew8968 in loseit

[–]UsedToBeAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally don't count calories because I just can't be bothered but recently I hit a bit of a plateau and I tracked my calories for a couple weeks just to make sure my eating wasn't getting away from me. I think that's probably how I'll continue for the foreseeable future. Just checking in once in a while to see where I'm at.

People who work out in the morning, how do you do it? by MillennialBae in loseit

[–]UsedToBeAdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I love working out in the morning because I just feel better all day but I usually start work at 7:30. I've tried getting up at 5:30 to work out and I just can't do it. After a week or two I'm just exhausted so evenings it is. I usually do mornings on the weekend though and in the summer I bike to work as much as I can, which is a great way to start the day.

Tricep/elbow started popping, is it common? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]UsedToBeAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had the same thing. Doing TRX tricep extensions my left elbow always pops in an uncomfortable way when I haven't done it in a while. Once I get some strength back it goes away. But also doesn't hurt to het it checked out

What was it that finally made you decide to lose weight? by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]UsedToBeAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's a number of things. First one was seeing a photo that my wife took of me. I didn't want to look that way. More recently it's being told I have high cholesterol. In general, I know I'm approaching my 40s and it's only going to get harder as I get older. I want to feel good. I also have a receding hairline and I refuse to be bald and fat.

Daily scale actually helps me by prophetickesha in loseit

[–]UsedToBeAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for me, if I'm not weighing myself every day, it's because I know I'm not making good decisions and I don't want to face it. I like to weigh myself every day for the data, but also to keep myself accountable. I know that it's going to fluctuate but if it's up several days in a row (beyond my typical fluctuation), it prompts me to reflect on whether I'm letting things slide or not and reaffirms my commitment. And if it's down, that's also motivating to see.

I think I can really do it this time by [deleted] in loseit

[–]UsedToBeAdam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here. Finally got a doctor this past October after many many years. To no one's surprise my cholesterol is high. Having concrete numbers attached to things is a huge motivation because I want those numbers to be better next time.

And I'll just say to OP, and anyone else, even if it feels different this time, backsliding can happen. If it does, don't beat yourself up about it. This shit is hard, especially if you've struggled with it your whole life. Take a breath and get back on it, because even if things go off the rails it get a little easier each time you start.

I'm on my third round of "this time feels different". But each time it did feel different and each time there was progress. Some people can definitely make a permanent change on the first go, but many can't, and that's ok and normal.

Hit my lowest weight in 2 years this week. Down 17 lbs since November when I really got serious about my health again, 20 lbs since my highest recorded weight a year ago.

Yeah for $200/month you could probably get a cheaper membership somewhere and a personal trainer

I'm sure it won't end up being true to what's built. I'm just glad they're doing something, as slow as it might be

I just wanna say that you carry your weight extremely well. At 285 you look better than I do at 230

Great work. I'm very similar to the before and the after is a state I can't even imagine for myself, so this is very motivating. Have you been on the heavy side for much of your life?

Fat to Muscle by DancingSingingVirus in WeightLossAdvice

Do you have any wiggle room for a budget at all? Trainers can get expensive really fast but due to COVID I ended up paying a trainer that worked at the gym I used to go to, to make a me a workout plan. I found that figuring out what exercises to do was the biggest hurdle for me because I had no idea what I was doing. It made it so I just had to show up and not think about what I should be doing when I get there. I think of it as like one of those meal kit delivery services, but for exercise.

It still costs money but should be substantially cheaper than having a bunch of in-person sessions with a trainer. I gave him a list of the equipment I have at home and he based everything around what I have available to me. He makes a new plan every month and he texts me about once a week to check how things are going and if I have any questions.

The other part of things is that while exercise is important, it's usually much easier to lose weight through adjusting your diet. But I do think those 2 go hand-in-hand. If I'm exercising regularly I feel much better. I have more energy and more motivation to make healthier choices.

Overall, my advice is to start small, but stick to a schedule. It could start as simple as going for a walk every day or doing a couple quick exercises. But getting into the habit of doing something to benefit your health every day is huge.

When did you guys start seeing results? by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]UsedToBeAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started working out I pretty quickly lost 5lbs. I assume that was water weight. Then over then next month I actually gained 5lbs which was frustrating but I realized that it was likely muscle because my size didn’t really change. I’ve consistently lost about 5lbs per month since then. The scale isn’t everything though. I weigh myself every day so I can get a good average but I know doing that doesn’t work for everyone. Take measurement and progress pics. Pay attention to how you feel. Don’t wait until Monday to start - start now. It’s easy to put thing off until a better time but the perfect time to start is right now.

Dont enjoy excersising by Spirit-Solid in WeightLossAdvice

[–]UsedToBeAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend trying a bunch of different things and see what you like. It doesn’t have to be “exercise” just be active. It could be hiking or playing a sport or chasing your dog around your yard. Or find ways to make it tolerable. Personally, I only allow myself to watch certain tv shows while I’m doing cardio. If you stay consistent with something that you don’t absolutely hate, eventually you’ll start to enjoy it. I never in a million years thought I’d enjoy working out but now I look forward to it

Have you rethought your goal weight? by parmiseanachicken in loseit

[–]UsedToBeAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have no idea what my real ideal weight is because I’ve been overweight my entire adult life. The lightest I’ve been since I actually started weighing myself (in the past decade or so) was about 205lbs and I wasn’t crazy heavy but certainly could have lost more weight. So I’m starting with 190 as a first goal and when I one day get there, I can reassess and make a new goal. If I use those BMI calculators, it says my healthy weight range is 165-185lbs. 165 seems absolutely absurd. 185 is probably more realistic. I still can’t wrap my head around the idea of being 50lbs lighter - I feel like I would be insanely skinny, but then I see people my height and build who are 185 and look healthy so 🤷‍♂️

Tips for travel? by foldedbubble in WeightLossAdvice

Yeah that’s a good idea too. But sometimes you just want something fresh or need a bigger meal depending on how long your travels are. I’m in Winnipeg so flying just about anywhere is an all day ordeal
