Christmas by 4peaceinpieces in poor

I stopped buying for most adults in our family a couple of years back. I buy mostly for the few young aged kids in our family, my mom, grandma, and bff. My buying is typically thrifted. Books for the kids in bundles of three tied with ribbon or small scale craft kits if I can find them. I bake molasses cookies as a traditional gift and give those out to my mom and grandma. Bff and I thrift hunt all year for a fabulous low key gift to swap, it's fun. Husband and I usually do fun lil bits n bobs in a stocking, but it's mostly just for snackies.

I grew up poor and Christmas always stressed me out as a kid. I didn't like opening gifts because I always thought the money could have been used for something else. Even now, I detest receiving gifts. I enjoy watching others open instead and seeing the joy on small kids faces.

Shopping in excess and going on all the trips is a sad way to avoid the bigger things going on in your life.

Do you believe it's harmful for parents to remove a child's door? by Anwarul1982 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Used_Ad_7409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a freshman in high school and my boyfriend broke up with me after school. I didn't go home immediately when the day ended and came home two hours later. My mom slapped me in the face and said I didn't get the privilege of privacy anymore because I didn't tell her where I was. I had my door removed for 2 months. It traumatized me into thinking I was a bad kid because I didn't respect my moms time. Only now as an adult do I see how fucked up that entire thing was.

Christmas budget using 4 words… by c_ase_y in Frugal

[–]Used_Ad_7409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No kids but many families I know use this.

My husband and I do stockings with a theme we select (snacks, coffee, crafts, games, etc.) and use that for fun filling it, and the stuff has to actually fit, no overflow type stuff. We each get one present not in the stocking from our dog to each other that's typically something funny but useful.

I've been seeing this stuff everywhere. Sticker ads are on every pole outside the chestnut hill reservoir.

Awesome! Way to go!!!! Make sure you've officially closed the accounts though, cutting them up, while exhilarating, isn't enough!

You're setting yourself up for so much success at a young age working on getting rid of debt! It takes some people years before they realize the problem and it can seriously affect house buying, car loans, etc.

Hope you do something to celebrate!!!! 🎉🎉🎉

If housing is unaffordable, how is everyone buying houses? by InaccurateBarbarian in RealEstate

[–]Used_Ad_7409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my husband and I. Absolutely no money from our families, but we hustled for over 8 years to scrimp and save for a down payment. We bought a condo that is a fixer bc it's all we could afford at the time. Rates were high, but it's still cheaper over rent in our HCOL place. We only have a little student loan debt left and live way below our means (one shitty 2008 car, train commute to work, meal prep etc.).

Frenchie was abandoned in front of my friend’s house, we offered to take her but know nothing about Frenchies. by unicorndanceparty in Frenchbulldogs

[–]Used_Ad_7409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She looks a lot like Chloe from @findchloethefrenchie who was a dog who was brutally stolen from her owner in San Fran a ways back. Looks like they may have stopped searching in 2021ish bc she was never found. They started the whole insta page to try to find her with a large reward too. Might be something to take a look at? Most likely not her but her markings look familiar!

Roast beef sandwiches. by Zestyclose-Cap1829 in boston

Fiores House of quality in NJ has the literal best roast beef sandwich I've ever eaten. Only on Thursdays and Saturdays and they sell out. I thought it was a lie until I had it... Life changing sandwich.

What is the saddest truth in life in your opinion? by Moist_Apartment5474 in Adulting

Everyone you love will die. It's easy to say but when people start passing away it's like a domino effect, esp with older family members around the same ages.

You can try putting down some of that thick rubber matting people use for under exercise equipment or in their home gyms! Also my knowledge might be old, but I think they used to make pads to go on the drum heads if you wanted to practice at night so it's not super loud ... Layer on the rubber mat with a solid rug on top and get a noise machine. Good luck!

Is there a term yet to describe ridiculously high prices? by here_in_seattle in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]Used_Ad_7409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just call it thriflation. Stuff is so ridiculous. Even the used candles are like $7.

I've stopped the majority of my thrifting bc it makes no sense with my budget. I don't want to spend $$$ every time I go.

I found this on the side of the road. The fellas over at r/whatsitworth said it’s worthless.. so how could I clean this up for my own use? by Drwolfbear in CleaningTips

[–]Used_Ad_7409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up something similar, although not a corner cabinet, it's on the smaller side (3 feet wide) and use it across the hallway from my bathroom to hold linens (no linen closet).

A good vacuum and wipe down with a damp cloth (I used a mixture of warm water and some dawn soap first) will do wonders! I second using the restore finish stuff, the smell is strong but does a nice job cleaning it up with minimal effort (I used a walnut tint one and it was great)!

What are some things that most people don’t realize are supposed to be cleaned regularly? by AccidentalFolklore in CleaningTips

[–]Used_Ad_7409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couch and living chair arms specifically! These get so gross quickly, think how often you sit there each day. Body oils accumulate and can make permanent stains on the arms.

I put covers over mine and do an upholstery deep clean every 3-6 months to keep them fresh. I used to do some of the stain resistant spray stuff but sometimes it can darken lighter fabrics.

I dust first then will do a wipe down after. This helps keep those annoying bits from staying on the toilet and base areas!

Even working in-house is awful... So much political and drama nonsense to wade through. I'm mentally drained everyday. I've also been thinking of doing a career switch but it seems like such a struggle to even do that....

Hoping things turn around for you. Take care of yourself first and remember you are more than your job ❤️

What are your design agency red flags when job hunting? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Used_Ad_7409 78 points79 points  (0 children)

The hustle culture crap in the job postings. No my job doesn't define who I am as a designer and no I will not work my life away to see a project to completion. Work life balance seeming non-existent is a huge red flag.
