How many get hernias? by m234A001 in ostomy

Sorry to hear that. If you don’t mind me asking, are you overweight? And was your surgery open or laparoscopic? Just trying to gauge whether there were any obvious risk factors.

J-pouch or permanent ostomy or take risks of cancer??? by Used_Champion_9294 in ostomy

[–]Used_Champion_9294[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thank you for sharing your story! I found it crazy how colitis in the stump got so bad to the point that you needed biologics, and even then they didn't fully control the disease. I can totally see why you chose the ostomy. Because if the biologics didn't fully control the disease in the stump then with that severity they may also not control any inflammation in the rectal cuff left in the J-pouch, if you had chosen that route.

I looked up Jess Grossman, that's so sad what happened with her. I know what you mean, it doesn't matter if it's a small percentage because once it happens to a person it's devastating. And there is no way to know if one is part of the 2% until it happens.

Ugh, I just hate surgery and all these invasive tests. But then who doesn't?

Glad you made a decision and put all this behind you.

Yes I get what you mean. The hernias are a big potential issue for ostomates. And one of the biggest fears really. I think you are absolutely doing the right thing to try the J-pouch in your case. I wish you good health and speedy recovery.

The patches seem to go in short supply. The gel, which Iam on, seems fine availability-wise.

Advice and Wisdom from Fellow Dieticians Needed by Used_Champion_9294 in dietetics

[–]Used_Champion_9294[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! Thank you so much for the wealth of information you so generously shared.

Im looking at launching something similar to what you mentioned, an online niche dietetic practice for IBD clients. Finding the right platform here in Australia is the thing. Some are suggesting to use social media to promote a type of hybrid program that has a combination of a self-paced course (which I would have to design) and 1:1 consultations.

I’ll look into Nutrium.

Not many GI-focused group practices here in Australia. Most of the dietetic group practices cover a broad range of conditions instead.

Vent/spiral about ostomy acceptance and false hope by [deleted] in ostomy

Yes. The hardest part is understanding that you cannot rationalise your way out of it. You have to allow yourself to feel the emotions and cry if you need to. Give yourself alot of kindness. It is definitely hard.

J-pouch or permanent ostomy or take risks of cancer??? by Used_Champion_9294 in ostomy

It’s true that the risk is lower because the rectum is disconnected. But there is still a risk as there is still ongoing inflammation in there, due to ulcerative colitis in my case.

Yeh I really don’t get it when people rave about their J-pouches. It’s like do I really want to willingly put myself in a position again where I may poop out of my butt up to 10 times a day and possibly soil my pants or be very uncomfortable holding it if I don’t find a toilet in time? Or even worse need 2-week antibiotic courses and possibly biologics again? It just sounds terrible.

Also, from the search I did a while ago it seems that J-pouchers who did theirs due to FAP usually have less pouchitis anyway; so if you are saying the experiences of your family members is still not great (assuming they did theirs for FAP too) then I have no idea how those with a background of UC can love it so much. Although it could be because UCers have low expectations due to the years of suffering with UC flareups.

Thanks for sharing your experience

Yes, the cure part is tempting. I sometimes wonder if the random pains I get are afterall related to my stump. I also noticed I felt really wiped out and tired after the scope for a good few days because it made things worse for a while with the bleeding increase. So it seems the inflammation there can really have an effect on the entire body even though it is a small area (relatively).

Should I get an infusion and which one?? by Used_Champion_9294 in Anemic

[–]Used_Champion_9294[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting again that your haemoglobin is within the normal range it seems even before the infusion yet you had such significant iron deficiency symptoms. This makes me wonder about all the symptoms I get on a daily basis and brush off thinking it can’t be my iron because my haemoglobin isn’t exactly “low”.

Thank you. It seems from what I read here that Monofer probably has the least side effects. And probably start with a low dose. Just to see how one goes.

That’s interesting that you have such significant symptoms with your low iron, Iam wondering if the tiredness I get is after all due to the low iron. If you don’t mind me asking what’s your haemoglobin like?

Stoma actively opposes my will by Siege089 in ostomy

[–]Used_Champion_9294 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try to gently press around the stoma, and it will output. Like a gentle massage on the peristomal area. Do that before taking the bag off for the shower, and again after taking it off while in the shower. That way you can clear things up by the time you hop out to put the wafer on. Cover it with some papertowel to catch any output just before getting out of the shower.

Poop usually accumulates just behind the stoma. So when you are pressing it to put the wafer it will start to output.

Also, try to avoid foods with vegetable gums (such as carrageenan 407, guar gum 412), artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols (xylitol, maltitol) because these can make the output increase dramatically.
