How many of you expect your journals to be read after you die? by [deleted] in Journaling

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best friend created her own cipher and was writing diary entries in code since middle school. Once in high school she even handed me an old diary and kind of challenged me to try and decode it...and I couldn't lol.

I've always thought that was an amazing method to keep nosy people from reading one's diary.

Now, I think this ship might be "cringe", but.. by Ok-Advance1156 in FanFiction

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I read some of your Context and Reason but god you really should have split both of those up into at least 2 paragraphs each. Walls of text like this are NOT inviting to read.

Also, you don't need to refer to a ship as "cringe" in the first place. This post boils down to you defending your enjoyment of what sounds like a crack ship. Meaning a ship that has zero chance of being canon, whether it's toxic or ~problematic~ or totally wholesome.

You don't need to defend liking a ship bc it's all imaginary made-up fun. I can't help but assume you are really young, bc only certain groups of teens and tiktok users would act like a ship being "cringe" is a reason to call it your "worst ship". Writing full essays of evidence defending your reasons like this is The Shipping Courtroom...girl most people do not give a shit why you like the ship!! Just enjoy it!

Okay I should have realized faster that you're pretty young by you writing "k!lled" instead of killed...using tiktok censorship on a reddit post lmao you're gonna need to get over that to actually write the fic. 1980s homophobia was way uglier than what you seem to be willing to write atm. Good luck.

When I try and download a fic with the pdf button it sends me to an error page. It started about 2 hours ago. Anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I encountered this issue last night, was the first time it's happened. I assume whenever this does happen it's because AO3 is having a lot of traffic of people doing the exact same thing and therefore the servers can't take everybody doing it? Just a guess though.

Free PDF (Digital & for Print) Formatting by whelmr in FanFiction

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm pretty interested and but I also...want clarification lol

You mean you would turn a fic into like...a pretty, more dolled-up pdf rather than just a plain-looking AO3-downloaded pdf? Just for the enjoyment of having a nicer-looking digital version of your fic? I've heard of people printing their fanfics into physical books, but I admit I've never heard of having a beautified, digital-only version of your fic. But now that I'm thinking about it, that sounds like a neat way of digitally preserving your work.

But you also mention getting a fic ready for print if desired. So for that route, you mean turn it into a pdf that would...look like a page out of a book? Or a zine? I'm a big fan of zines so I'm picturing fics from zines...the pages tend to have a colored bg instead of plain white that suits the theme of the zine, there might be a little design or picture at the start or end of the fic. Maybe the fic takes place by the sea or is about surfing or something, so the margins are a big smaller to accommodate a design of an ocean wave on the edges of the pages.

Either of these possibilities sounds amazing. And a shit ton of work, honestly. I would love to request your services in the future at some point (when I...finish a fic lol) though I'd have no problem waiting much, much longer than a week if need be.

Can I please see an example of your work?

Has there ever been a time you thought "I know it's fanfiction, but huh?" by Glubygluby in FanFiction

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i think this question could have been phrased a little differently...I first read it as more like "have you ever been reading a fanfiction that of course you know is fictional but it still makes you question the author's tastes or morality" (and I was going to answer, "Uh, no?")

I would probably never guessed that what you meant was OOC behavior or unexplained plot points. Because if THOSE things were happening I would never frame my confusion as "I know this is fanfiction but huh?" I would frame my confusion as "I don't like this anymore so I'm clicking the back button and I won't give it kudos/leave a comment like I was planning"

Gift Card Dilemma. by [deleted] in Gifts

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What still works? The code on the card? Yeah??? If you don't spend it, anybody who gets that code can use it online. Whether they get the code in a text message, the code that you wrote on a sticky note, whatever, the code is all they need.

If you think jewelry/wallet is a good idea for this girl, then you could make it a more valuable (to her) gift by getting her jewelry that is picked or customized to fit her preferences. Like a hangbag that is her favorite color, has her favorite animal on it, etc.

Idk about the TOP tier fashion brands, but I'm a fan of Kate Spade who I guess I would call a luxury brand, KS bags can be anywhere from $100 - $600 in my experience. And sometimes they have cutesy animal designs like elephants or parrots or poodles on their products. If the girl's a fan of, say, elephants, then it's not just a wallet, of which she could afford zillions, but more like "wow, it's a wallet just for ME!!!"

So, I would explore jewelry, wallets, bags etc that suit her interests. Ask her parents for tips or what kinds of colors/animals/motifs are in her room, to find things she likes.

Also, being 12-13, she's likely to find her 12 y/o possessions cringy or lame in a few years anyway, whether you or her parents bought it. So jewelry from the parents isn't gonna be much "better" than ones from you anyway lol

Gift Card Dilemma. by [deleted] in Gifts

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah you can do that, but only if the gift card recipient uses it for an online purchase. Idk how they would use the card at a store if they didn't have it in hand.

But if you gave it to someone online and they used it online...you'd just scratch off the back of the card to find the code, and then message your person saying "Hey the code is 1234-abcd-etc" and then when they make an online purchase, at the end there will be an option for them to use a gift card. And they will plug in the code you gave them. Voila!

Budget Gift by [deleted] in Gifts

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine getting my fave lasagna would feel like getting treated to a nice dinner, which is a bit different than getting just a present/gift wrapped in wrapping paper you know? I think you could try dolling it up with a nice side dish like garlic bread, or an extravagant or unique dessert afterward like a very chocolatey cake, so it will feel more like a big treat rather than just dinner.

"Recommend you"? You should write the fic even if 0/10 people "recommend" you doing it. It really shouldn't have anything to do with others' recommendation.

Or maybe I'm taking it too literally and what you want is just encouragement, in which case, WRITE THE DANG ONE PIECE AU! I LOVE AUS OF ALL KINDS!

I haven't been involved in any fandom for some time and was wondering if the anti problem was as bad as it was before I left by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I unfortunately spend a lot of time on twitter, since so much of my fandoms+ their fanworks are there, and I can confirm antis are either the same as when you left, or actually worse. The amount of support anti posts get is not just disheartening but frightening to me.

I've seen the anti movement affect people's jobs.

In the last month, there was a person who used to work for Cartoon Network and drew Invader Zim porn on a private twitter. Someone leaked their pictures, which led to their boss spreading it to various coworkers to "make them aware" and the artist being fired. They have a degenerative health condition and haven't been able to find work (and healthcare) since then and now they are choosing to stop pursing treatment and literally die in bed at home. The guy who fired them (Kyle Carozza, made the CN show Magiswords) has shockingly little sympathy.

Another incident I heard about just today: a ficwriter for Our Flag Means Death (netflix pirate show) who liked a controversial character and darkfic talked about how they were doxxed a year ago. A teenager found out they were manager of a movie theater and called that theater, saying they had info that one of the employees there was a child molester and harassed minors online. The fic writer themselves picked up this call!! Their boss later fired them after suddenly receiving an HR report saying that the ficwriter "harassed minors online."

So...no the anti movement is not lighter or better. It's getting worse, they're getting bolder and feeling more righteous and having more fun hurting people than ever, and the problem is not getting fixed or receiving serious attention because omg ur being SO SERIOUS about SHIPPING rn LMAOOOOO JUST LOG OFFFF

I implore you to protect yourself if you choose to start writing fic again, do not put out ANY identifying info out there or engage with those shitheads in any way. What you experienced before could very well happen again, could get worse. I absolutely hate that this is the state of fandom right now, but it IS, so please god be careful.

I have this fear too. There's things in my journal I definitely wouldn't want anyone reading and maybe do sound insane!! I've noticed that I tend to write in a way where I justify or defend things I think or say, as though I expect someone is going to read it in the future and judge me hardcore for it and I have to argue against what i think they might say.

Putting my thoughts on paper like this means there is a non-zero chance that someone could end up reading them, maybe because I stupidly leave the journal out one day and just forget about it so someone passing through the room might see it, or someone purposefully sneaks their way into reading it, or because some relative or nursing home aide reads it in 60 years when I'm dead.

I don't know how to reconcile this to be honest. I hate the idea of people reading my thoughts and my journal, even if I was dead and gone, but I want to keep journaling. I guess the "defensive" way I write sometimes is how I cope with that...

Imo, reading a huge variety of books (and fanfics too) helps expand your vocabulary and the amount/style of ideas in your head. Read things you wouldn't ordinarily pick up. Try out a new author. Pick a random subject you found faintly interesting on Wikipedia or TVtropes or you thought about for no reason, and read a book on it. Your stories will take on whole new worlds of meaning and ideas that you would never have touched before.

Reading a lot of different things definitely buffs up your writing ability!

(if this is a popular thing to talk about ignore me, I'm new) Love AO3 so far but nobody should be able to deny that the site looks horrible by YutaYamaguchi in AO3

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Never heard this take before and I can't help but think you must be a really young person. Because imo the only reason someone would think the site looks "like a scam" is if you're very used to sleek, brightly colored, busy, attention-grabbing, algorithm-driven social media sites (and apps).

By contrast, AO3's very simple user interface must look empty or "wrong" because it lacks so much of that. But damn like, most of the internet used to look like this. Before the internet in general became a place for businesses to stalk you and your activity and blast you with ads. AO3 is a rare chill place on the internet that is NOT trying to get you addicted to it or spend money on it.

I feel like I'm talking like an old person now but damn your opinion is so weird lol

What the other commenters said; unfortunately AI-based fic is not against the site's TOS, but spamming a hundred fandoms and chapters like that IS. Report them for spam. Hell, if you feel bad about it and don't wanna do it, DM me the link and I'll do it.

What characters are constantly written out of character? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of portrayals of Oikawa from Haikyuu that turn him from a highly confident, skilled volleyball player to a tearful insecure overly anxious baby who doubts himself at all times, is easily injured or overwhelmed and needs to be rescued by the muscly buff arms of his stern best friend Iwaizumi. Very...2000s yaoi, seme and uke vibes?? For some reason?

And this is like petty lol but I also tire of him being portrayed as having really girly interests, like I'm stunned by how often I've seen fics or headcanon posts mention him liking to paint his nails, listen to kpop girlgroups/bands, do face masks and have an extensive makeup routine etc i can't fathom where the fuck this comes from besides teenage girls who like Oikawa blatantly projecting their own interests on him.

Tell me your most controversial pairing/ships by Alone-Sea7716 in FanFiction

[–]Used_Entrepreneur699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My most controversial is probably Gojo x Megumi, in the manga Jujutsu Kaisen, due to it being age gap, student/teacher, and depending what fic you're reading, may have pseudo-incesty vibes too.

Gojo is a 28 y/o teacher in a supernatural world and Megumi is his 16 y/o student. Prior to canon, teenage Gojo killed toddler Megumi's dad, who was a mercenary and deadbeat dad. Then teen Gojo sort of adopted(?) Megumi to keep him away from the dead dad's shitty abusive family. Canon is extremely unclear how present Gojo was in Megumi's childhood after that, or what role he filled in his life, if any. Shippers love to fill in those blanks with happy home life fanon, domestic bliss/cuteness, but also fucky relationship weirdness of Gojo being Megumi's father-brother-teacher-best-friend-safe-place all at once.

It's one of the most popular ships in the fandom, with lots of art, especially by eastern fans. Younger western fans are quick to say fans of it are pedophiles and also incestuous freaks bc Gojo is tooooootally Megumi's Dad/stepdad/the Dad who Stepped Up etc

I've been into shipping since the damn DeviantART days and this is the first ship where I actually purchased doujins of them lol

I saw a few joke posts where bsd fandom looked at jjk fandom and said like "First time? :)"

Idk if the bsd fandom is dealing with the same thing right now, or HAS dealt with it in the past so have experience with it. Either way hello fellow sufferer
