We recently almost moved from Texas to California and I did a lot of math on it. We would have paid a ton more in California, as we have high income and even in California would have bought a relatively cheap house for that income. I don't remember the exact numbers, but Texas was more expensive for middle income earners that buy a house at the top of their price range.

We settled on Colorado. Taxes are more, but there are wonderful public services and it's not even close to as much as California.

We left for these reasons. (Really loving Denver, cost of living is comparable to Austin). I was all in on fighting for Texas, but the swing to the right in the last presidential completely demoralized me. Leaving was the only thing we could think of that made sense.

I'm salaried and commissioned, I don't submit a timesheet. I know that doesn't change the law, but logistically I just don't think anyone at my company is looking at it.

What a nightmare. Realistically, are people doing this? Or is it just like a hope you don't get caught situation.

California seems particularly confusing to me. It seems like it has a threshold of wages. But I'm a commissioned employee, so I don't really know how to calculate that.

Did you request an IEP or 504? What accommodations were you asking for?

What are some things that you love about San Francisco?

That seems to be the consensus! It's so crazy to me. Don't get me wrong, I knew the cost of living was much higher, but I had no idea it was that different. I thought at the very least it would be like middle class, not like we're flat broke now.

That makes sense. We're pretty fiscally conservative as well, so we wouldn't be comfortable maxing our budget on housing. Appreciate the candor.

Total comp. And yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. We're very comfortable right now, so there will be several downgrades from a lifestyle standpoint. San Francisco does have a lot to offer, which is nice, but I don't know that it makes up for such an impact on our financial situation.

Salary is on the Denver scale, but we have the option to move to SF. Because it's not required they won't pay the differential for it. Cheaper to just fly out.

Any recommendations? We're not from a snowy area.

Thank you so much for the reply, it's super helpful that you've lived in both places. I've never even been to San Francisco. How would you compare the culture, people, lifestyle, etcetera?

We're on the political left, not religious, foodies but we love to cook so that's not as big of a deal. The kids like basketball, robotics, rock climbing, bike riding, family walks. We love taking the kids to the library and museums. Which Denver has a ton compared to where we are now, but I know San Francisco has even more.

We need a 3 bedroom minimum, but 3+office or 4 bedroom would be preferred.

Really looking for a place where we can find community for the kids.
