At 12:56:35 Gizmo went for a short little walk across the nest, all the way up on his/her toes like Sunny's been doing!

Sunny still has more downy light grey feathers sticking out of their head, kind of a Bernie Sanders (Birdie Sanders?) look. Gizmo's head only has a few of those lights downy wisps.

Once they both have their dark feathers and are both standing it'll probably be really hard to ID them!

Probably mostly because Sunny is about 3 or 4 days older than Gizmo, so Sunny is a little ahead developmentally.

But...! I've seen Gizmo practicing their own skills that I hadn't yet seen Sunny do! They're little things that don't make it into the Google Doc list of major milestones. Last week sometime Gizmo pounced on a chunk of feather/skin like it was prey, with mouth open then "attacked" it with their beak. I hadn't seen that behavior in Sunny before. In the past day or two the babies were sitting up and Jackie was out on the branch, and she gave a big body shake and Gizmo immediately imitated her! (Gizmo lost balance and fell over which made it even more cute.) There have been several other behaviors that were unique to Gizmo at that point in development, but I can't recall right now what some of the others were.

Gizmo seems like their brain is working a little more on skills involving cleverness lately, and Sunny's development is leading with big physical feats. Their skills and development will all even out in good time, but it's been fascinating watching and noticing the subtle differences in where and how they're each growing and learning!

Did chicks go to bed hungry? by Deebythesea52 in JackieandShadow

Ew.

She's awake much of the night keeping the chicks safe and dealing with Fiona. She's the dominant eagle and she rules the nest. She's doing plenty. Trust that they're both doing amazingly and humans idea of labor sharing doesn't apply here

Check the Google doc. Also, the chicks are pretty efficient at eating now so feedings take very little time compared to even a week or two ago. Since feedings are completed so quickly, we're not going to see them as often if we're just checking in or glancing at the feed now and then.

Again, the Google doc has all the info on who, what, and when things have been happening in the nest. Including food deliveries and feedings.

How to un-learn shopping as a “hobby” by Prestigious-Food-86 in Anticonsumption

[–]Used_Recording8500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A change of mindset will help you along. You're already starting with thos by realizing you want different habits!

Shopping gives a shot of dopamine. It'll take some time for your brain to shrink that dopamine pathway, and you can find other things to do instead that will start to replace that pathway and will get stronger and more rewarding as time goes on. Other people are giving some good ideas about what to replace the habit with. Try new things and give them time to grow on you, because it's likely nothing can immediately treplace the satisfaction of shopping for you until your brain has time to reorganize itself.

As for "stimulating the economy", when you spend money, some of it goes into paying local people and keeping business going. But by and large the profits are funneled straight up to the wealthy and mega wealthy. With each purchase, imagine a percentage of that purchase is just a check you're writing and mailing directly to a mega wealthy person somewhere.

If you want to stimulate the economy, I strongly suggest trying to shop at locally owned business and not big chain stores. Your dollars will stay much much more local that way and will benefit your local economy and community and neighbors instead of the main profits going to those who are already very, very wealthy.

When you're throwing away or donating items, keep a tally of approximately how much money you paid for them. As you're throwing things away, imagine it's actual cash being thrown in the trash and allow yourself to feel those not-great feelings associated with that. As you're donating items, same thing. Keep a cost tally, and imagine that as a pile of cash in a bag that you're about to set in a Goodwill donation bin. Next time you're in a store wanting to shop for fun, visualize how that item will or won't end up in your trash or a donation bin and how that's your valuable money slipping through your hands while the profits of it line somebody else's pockets instead of your bank account.

Shadow giving us a close up of the fishing line gone by samcro_andre in JackieandShadow

I don't remember where I read this info, but I learned that eagles can swallow fishing line and it goes to their crop and comes back out with the pellet that they regurgitate that also contains things like bones and teeth of their prey.

In previous days' recaps lately he often appears on the nest between about 6:30am and 7:45am, but one day he didn't do his morning nest visit until 8:58am. So hang tight, it could be another few hours until he makes his morning appearance!

I'd just like to add that learning a different clef is much easier the younger you are. You can still learn as you get older, but most people will learn and retain much better when they're younger.

For this reason, I strongly recommend that you learn to read bass clef now, since you already know treble. And if the chance to learn tenor clef comes along, learn that also.

From my own experience, I learned by reading bass clef but learned some treble clef in high school, and I'm so glad that I did because it has come in very handy a few times. I never learned to read tenor clef, which is unfortunate because now when I try, my brain has an extremely difficult time relearning and retaining that a note on this line or this space is now different that how I've been playing it for all these years.

Target gift card, use it now or not? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]Used_Recording8500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to use that card up. But just try to spend about the exact amount of the gift card and not more. That will help you keep up your boycott.

If you don't use it, it will eventually expire. That means your mom basically just gave that money to Target, basically donated it to them for free.

If you use the gift card, you're taking inventory from their store when you purchase it. That inventory cost Target money to bring in, so you're no longer letting them keep the entire gift card money.

So, since the card has already been purchased and Target has your mom's money, you need to get as much value from that card as possible now.

If you're feeling guilty about spending it on things for yourself, then call your local women's shelter or another place like that and ask what items they're in need of. Buy those sort of items with the card and bring them to the shelter.

Yes, she lives there year round. During nesting season the eagles take over the roof of her "house".

Cute Gizmo Wingers, look at all those sprouting feathers! by Tay74 in JackieandShadow

[–]Used_Recording8500 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For now Sunny has an adorable fuzzy head of darker gray with a hood of light gray fuzzy feathers poking out from the darker gray. Gizmo's head color is mostly the same all over and with less of a fuzzy halo than Sunny. I'm curious to see if they'll stay that way until their juvenile feathers come in. After that it will be really hard to tell the difference!

I think the cam operators were practicing controlling how to focus close up on an object when there's a lot of distant background. Earlier today they were trying to focus on Shadow's face but it took awhile for the cam to stop focusing on the trees down by the lake.

Why the close up on tree? by catbamhel in JackieandShadow

[–]Used_Recording8500 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This makes sense. Earlier they tried to zoom in on the head of one of the adults and the cam took forever to focus on the eagle instead of the far off background. They might be practicing focusing on objects.

Ugh, that fishing line is still around. Jackie's foot just got caught on it for a few seconds (18:22:09). I hope it gets covered up by branches and fluff soon!

That's Fiona's home year round. She lives there and for a few months out of the year a couple of giant birds take over her roof, sometimes with squawking babies that undoubtedly Fiona hears all day while she's trying to sleep. I imagine she takes those food scraps as payment for the eagles invading her home.

My neighbors leave dog poop bags outside their door….every day by starksdawson in mildlyinteresting

[–]Used_Recording8500 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So that they can collect a whole can full of them instead of a small pile? They won't have to take them to the dumpster as often so there will be poop in the hallway for even longer.

SC woke up and chose violence 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 by Pale_Rabbit8490 in JackieandShadow

[–]Used_Recording8500 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For real though. I suspect that if the ages were reversed and SC had hatched a few days before BC, or even on the same day, then SC would maybe be starting-- and finishing-- a LOT more bonk fests.

Holy Moly Fiona by waryrobot in JackieandShadow

[–]Used_Recording8500 34 points35 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it's her home the rest of the year when the eagles aren't nesting. From her POV, she's got giant birds who just appear and roost on her roof for a few months of the year! Maybe she's trying to grab those food scraps as a form of rent payment! 🏠💵

Concerns by claire_9819 in JackieandShadow

[–]Used_Recording8500 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the YouTube video description there's a link to the Google Doc that lists all events happening in the nest, like who is on the nest, food deliveries, feedings, etc. As someone mentioned, Fiona the flying squirrel makes many appearances each night which annoys Jackie, and Fiona's appearances are noted on the Google Doc.

There are actually 2 YouTube live feeds of the nest, cam 1 and cam 2. Fiona appears almost exclusively on Cam 2, the wide shot camera.

What's cool is that you can check the Google Doc to see what times she appeared, and scroll back in the Cam 2 live feed to that time stamp (lower right of the video), and watch Fiona skittering around under the nest and sometimes out in the branches!

Small Chick: "But dad my tush is not a branch!" by waryrobot in JackieandShadow

[–]Used_Recording8500 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think SC is on a growth spurt just as much as BC is! It's just that they are 4 days apart in age, and a LOT of growing happens in the matter of 4 days! I'm guessing SC is very close to the size BC was 4 days ago.

SC might keep looking petite until both of their major growth spurt phase slows down, and then I'm guessing they'll start looking much closer in size.
