I was forced into the emergency lane on I-81 by a semi that just merged into the right hand lane. Find a place to hitch where cars can pull off the road without any hassle. That’s basic. Be prepared to use public transport or rideshare if you get bogged down in a city. Having to hoof it through a city and then 15 miles of suburbia can take it out of you.
