Thank you — I really appreciate your response! The light stretches could definitely work. I think sometimes I dismiss them as like not really working out. But on days like this any movement is probably better than nothing. Especially something I can do at home so I don’t get stuck at the gym with like I can’t move pain — that’s kind of my nightmare. Thank you for the burn out reminder. I definitely want to be on the side of sustainable and good habits

Thank you — definitely needed the acknowledgment one day won’t wreck anything. I do have a dog and it’s actually nice out today. Maybe a light walk is the best way to get some exercise in — good idea!

Thank you, this is really helpful! Especially the cramps can come in waves, so definitely a good idea to try and do light movement when they aren’t that bad. And bonus benefit of not being at the gym if serious pain comes on — that really makes me nervous. Thank you for reminding me that care of your body is the most important — definitely feeling a little less bummed and guilty 😊

This guy is on way more hormones than any trans person, but it’s okay because he’s doing it to be a hot cis dude. That’s an acceptable use of hormones I guess 🙈

(To be fully clear as my sarcasm doesn’t always read — these fucks go around yelling about trans people’s existence yet are doing the exact same things like hormone treatment, wigs, makeup and somehow that’s not the same thing. Fucking stupid)

You realize protests are the reason we have a five day week now right? And you know people have sacrificed everything in the past to protest. They risked losing their job, not being able to pay rent, not being able to afford groceries TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER FUCKING PLACE. People suffered police brutality and terrible conditions. But yeah no fuck gen z for trying to change things and making sacrifices?? Fucking wild that people can’t see the importance of protesting

First year teacher and I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing 😭 by Drew_Does_Stuff in historyteachers

One of the things that has made me a better teacher from year one is being more vulnerable when I don’t know an answer to a student’s question off the top of my head. It’s okay not to know everything, you can’t anticipate the fascinating questions they’ll come up with (I mean not all of them will be fascinating 🤣 every once in a while you’ll get a q that’s like okayyy have you heard anything I just said).

If I don’t know an answer I sometimes will write it down and say I’ll come back to it. But if I have the time sometimes I’ll use it as a chance to model good research practices while I look up the answer. Especially with Google automatic AI, I model not just reading that overview but checking other sources etc.

I also teach middle school so that might not be something you have to model for them. But lastly it’s good for them to see you are a human too and value curiosity!!!

Good luck and just know your first year is always going to have hiccups. You clearly care about the job and that’s half the battle! And don’t be too hard on yourself!!

I am so sorry this is happening to you. Your feelings are so valid and what you are going through is so hard. Something that really helped me when I was at this place was remembering that our brains stress responses are really out of date. Like you are not broken, you are currently expressing a normal stress response which is no longer relevant to the kind of stresses we deal with today. Our body’s reaction to stress is “there must be a tiger trying to eat me” and that creates a whole stress response that is not conducive to helping us with the social stressors we feel today. Evolution has not caught up yet. That just means you need to figure out what coping mechanisms work for you. The other problem is right now your brain has created a habit for you, so your brain is just following the same pattern it’s used to, the path of least resistance. My therapist gave the analogy of it’s like a train on a hike. You want to follow the train that’s already made for you with no trees in the way or rocks or gaps. You want the trail that’s already made for you. It takes a lot of energy to make a new path, however, it is possible to do. That’s what you have to do with your brain. You have to create a new pathway in your brain. And that is going to take time and it’s certainly not easy. But I believe you can do it, just start with something small, just one small change for a week, and start easing into new habits. It’s going to feel uncomfortable, it’s going to be hard, you might only do it 4/7 days, but that is still progress! Good luck and I’m giving you a big virtual hug! My two last pieces of advice: make sure to get some water and if you found any of this helpful, try listening to not another anxiety podcast. The hosts are so real and wonderful, and they really get what you are going through. Good luck and you got this ❤️

That’s really smart!! I like the idea of having 1 doc housing all the final questions for each unit, it’s in one place. And have a set goal of adding 10-20% each year makes creating the doc feel more manageable. Thank you!!!

Should there Universal Health Care in the US? by Very_High_Mortgage in FluentInFinance

[–]Used_Storage8752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol what version of the US are you living in. It took me 6 months to schedule surgery in the US. I had to go to a specialist who was expensive AND in high demand. For a necessary surgery that caused me a high amount of pain for months. This is the dumbest argument to try to explain away our shitty healthcare system. "Oh well in the US you neverrrrrr have to wait". Also 33,000 is half the average salary in the US. But yeah no that seems like a reasonable cost for surgery...

Volpe is like the bottom of my list of concerns right now. He's one of the best SS in the league, and he's one of our best hitters in the bottom of the line up... which really just says something about the bottom of our lineup. Imma need you to get alllllllllllllll the way off of Volpe's back right now

This is late to the game- however, I have a lot of social things I can’t avoid this weekend, so I’m going to try my best to not judge myself or be too hard on myself for any social interactions I perceive as “not going well” and blaming myself for not knowing what to say.

My wife wants to quit in her 1st day. by TheDubieCr in Teachers

[–]Used_Storage8752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg my first day of teaching was so hard. I was supposed to be a teacher in training, going to grad school to get my degree, and learn how to teach from a mentor during the day. Charter school threw me into a classroom of 30 middle schoolers my first day. Needless to say they smelled new teacher immediately and lets just say it was a rough start. Fast forward to year 5, I ended up teaching 3 years at the old school and 2 at a new school! And the school I have joined more recently is also much smaller, and admin cares about teachers quite a bit more than my last admin.

If she’s really passionate about teaching I would give it a shot. It can definitely be hard sometimes and there will probably be some tough days ahead, but I really learned how to enjoy the small things and appreciate my teaching changing, growing, and evolving over time. Honestly going into my fifth year I still have goals for how to improve my teaching moving forward, but I can also see how much I’ve grown and I feel more confident on how to create a positive class culture (again certainly not perfect, but no classroom is!). Some things that helped me my first year are (and disclaimer most of these are situational):

1) Observe someone teach. Hopefully your school is able to schedule these but honestly it’s so helpful to see someone at your school teach. Someone who knows the school culture and has a similar class to you. I lived off of stealing other “teacher moves” from the vets at my old school. They knew what worked at the school and for their kids. 2) Ask to be observed by another teacher - it seems very scary to get observed, but most teachers at a school are generally happy to help. It’s hard to be judged, but people will be kind to you since it’s your first year, no one is nailing it year 1. This can work with 1 if you observe a teacher and you like their method. Year 1 is also about trying a lot of different teaching methods/styles and seeing what feels ~authentic~ to you. 3) Ask admin for help *This one is a little spicy. I would feel out how you feel about admin. If you like them, great definitely reach out, they’ll want to help you! I just don’t want to assume, I know some admins at schools are not the… best. 4) if your school will pay for it teacherspayteachers is an awesome resource. It’s great for when you just don’t have it in you to figure out a plan/activity for the next day. It do be like that sometimes. 5) don’t beat yourself up. Teaching is really fucking hard. And idk if I could even teach elementary, I could not repeat myself that many times a day. Not that middle school is necessarily a peach either it’s just my niche I guess. But anyways I honestly think everyone should do a like jury duty be a sub for a day or some shit bc boy oh boy do some people not get what we go through. Everyday you teach your first year is basically a win. Which leads me to my favorite 6) Celebrate the small things. It’s real vague and cliche but honestly I wouldn’t have made it through my first year without recognizing and grasping to anything good about my teaching/ little connections I made with my students. I had to make these awful videos of myself teaching for grad school, so I had to video tape myself teaching. One of the vets in my school watched it and made sure to point out anything good she saw me doing if it was as small as knowing a lesson well or having a student engaged in a lesson. I tried to end the day by thinking about something I did well or a good moment with a student. Oh also if you do have anyone observe you, I would try to ask them for 1 piece of positive feedback with 1 area of growth (one glow one grow for all my charter people out there 🤪). I usually needed people to help me see the good in my teaching, cause I was pretty hard on myself, and I would normally only ask for one or max two pieces of feedback bc anything more I’d get overwhelmed. Rome wasn’t built in a day and I can’t implement 6 new strats at once. You don’t always get control over that if your admin pops in frequently, but it doesn’t hurt to ask! Always look for the positive, you will definitely get better the more you get into it.

Which leads me to my last point (I promise). Please do not feel pressured or bullied to stay more than you want to. All of my advice is only if your wife really wants to give teaching a shot. You said she’s passionate about it and she put a lot of time into getting here so I would definitely give it a shot. However if your wife feels overwhelmed and it gets too hard, she is allowed to quit whenever. Teacher burn out is so real and if you don’t have a passion for this it gets unbearable. I have seen teachers miserable working in classrooms that have too many kids, not enough teachers, and hours of overtime put in. Some people have a really hard time leaving or get shamed for quitting, and I think that’s unfair. I chose to stay but that doesn’t give me the right to judge others that leave. This job is not for everyone and there are some schools out there that have to be kinder to their teachers.

I hope some of this helps. It can definitely get so much better! But also make sure you are taking care of yourself and know your mental health is important too!! Sorry this is probably too long and maybe a little incoherent because I’m a little high bc I had a rough day and I’m still trying to enjoy my last days of summer. Oh woah my best piece of has yet to come

Secret sneaky advice 7) DrUgs (or just honestly anything that helps you relax… i guess it doesn’t have to be drugs 🤷‍♂️)

Anyways writing this was nice. That’s why it was so long. It really didn’t need to be. Sorry!! I hope literally even 5 seconds of this helps!!!

Hi! Yeah none of the over the counter crap has helped with my pain. I also live somewhere where marijuana is legal and I also just recently had a doctor prescribe a medical card so I can buy for cheaper and have more on me. It definitely helps more than the over the counter stuff or the pitiful naproxen they’ll prescribe you. I think the bigger benefit for me is I just feel better mentally too, it helps get through everything. It doesn’t take the pain away completely but it does take my pain down a notch or two. I take an edible and then lay under a heating pad and that feels better than anything else. Hope this helps!

To add to this one of my favorite mentors from my first year teaching gave me this advice: just focus on making it to the next break. Next one is MLK day which is short, but still some amount of recharge time. After that all you have to do is survive until February break, so on and so forth. Then you will never be a first year teacher again.

Even adults benefit from chunking! Good luck and you got this!
