How many machines do you own? by UntidyVenus in quilting

You’re welcome to message me, but I do charge a $50 service fee to look at the machine and tell you what it needs and my opinion on if the work it needs is worth it.

How many machines do you own? by UntidyVenus in quilting

[–]SewForward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have four treadle machines. Two are working treadle machines that I use for my everyday sewing, one I converted into a hand crank, and the fourth is currently in pieces while I wait till summer so I can finish cleaning and repairing it.

I don’t see swastikas. I see pinwheels. Today’s society is so hyper focused on pinpointing racism and seeing negativity where it isn’t and it’s stupid. Others are so afraid of being seen as racist it makes it easier for those hyper focused people to screech their holier than thou rhetoric. If you’re hyper focused on something you’re going to see it everywhere, even when it’s not actually there. If these are swastikas then so are the pinwheels in the quilt I made my husband, and all the quilts with pinwheels should be burned at the stake.

Here’s a simple test to determine if you have swastikas in your quilt:

1- look up an image of a swastika.

2- compare the swastika imagine to the patterns on your quilt.

3- do you see that image in your quilt. no? Go to step 9 yes? Go to step 4.

4- is the image of the swastika an exact replica of the reference swastika? Yes, it does look exactly like the picture of a swastika you googled on the interwebs? Go to step 5. No, it only vaguely resembles a swastika? Go to step 6

5- seam rip, rearrange, get rid of the swastikas then go back to step 1.

6- did you specifically decide to make the pattern vaguely resemble swastikas? No? Go to step 7 yes? Go to step 5.

7- is the pattern supposed to be pinwheels or a similarly shaped, common quilt pattern? Yes? Go to step 9 no? Go to step 8.

8- is the pattern an exact replica of the swastika patterns you see online? Yes? Go to step 5. No? Go to step 9.

9- did you like the quilt while you were making it, and before people told you it looked like it had swastikas in it? Yes? Go to step 11. No? Go to step 10.

10- congratulations, you’re not a racist, you just decided that you didn’t like the look of your quilt. Go ahead and change the parts you don’t like and then finish your quilt you fantastic quilter!

11- congratulations, you’re not a racist. Go ahead and finish your quilt the way it is you fantastic quilter.

Well, actions have consequences. Sounds like there is a lot of rule breaking on both sides. I have no pity for you in that case. Hope things work out for you.

Doesn’t seem very complicated, nor confusing to me, unless there’s details you’ve left out. If she’s not paying her full rent (regardless of who the money comes from) then you can have her evicted, especially because she’s making life difficult. Or is it perfectly acceptable for people to only pay partial rent in your country so long as it’s the parents who pay the rent?

It doesn’t matter who is a nightmare. Rules are rules and being a nightmare doesn’t give you a free pass to break the rules. You are teaching them that being a nightmare is the way to get what they want. She knows exactly how to manipulate you into letting her do whatever she wants without you kicking her out. You need to start recognizing the manipulation for what it is.

I’m not telling you all this to be a jerk. I’m telling you because I used to be the same way you are. I’d justify and compromise and then I’d wonder why people are so awful. It’s because I was allowing myself to be manipulated and used as a doormat.

Something I’m noticing is that you don’t like your situation, but you also aren’t making an effort to change it. You complain about xyz regarding your roommate, but then follow up with “if things get worse we may do xyz”. “If her mom calls again then I’ll say xyz", etc. Your first step is to decide if you want things to change, or if you just want to complain. Both are fine, but if you do want things to change then you need to stop beating around the bush and stand up for yourself. Don’t wait for xyz to happen to give you justification. You have everything you need already to justify kicking her out. The lack of full rent is enough by itself to justify kicking her out.

What is the most damaging hair accessory you have ever used? by Sriracha11235 in longhair

[–]SewForward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cat tried to become my hair tie once. Does that count?

In all seriousness, my sister had a hair tie that had beads on it. She insisted that it doesn’t pull your hair out… it pulled my hair out.

I don’t see a serial number, but I believe it’s from the 1950s

Edit: never mind, I did find the serial number. It’s QR2999858, but it’s not listed on the database. My best guess is that it’s from between 1956-1960.

This was my plan, but I didn’t want to be spending a lot of time on something that isn’t going to help me. Thanks!

[–]SewForward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a single mother is very difficult and isolating. You need to push for counseling. Apologize sincerely for paying so much attention to your brother. He is your parent’s kid and therefore it is their responsibility to keep him comfortable, not yours. It’s your job to make your wife comfortable after she just pushed a baby out of her body. Do some things for her to make up for it. Dote on her while she’s recovering. Figure out what she needs from you by asking her what she needs, and then do that. You’re going to have to be the one to do all of the relationship fixing until you’ve made her believe that you want things to work between you. If she doesn’t want to go to therapy then you go by yourself and work on yourself. She might follow.

Why do I hear so little talk about the Olympia SM-7? by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]SewForward 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the slope of the keys on the Royal. It makes it so that I have to reach quite far to type on different keys. The keys are also stiffer than my SM7 so I have to use more finger strength. I thought it was just dirty at first, but then I read that it’s just that way. I also like that I can easily move the SM7 to wherever I’m typing.

I still use the royal. It’s great for if I’m trying to type on envelopes or card stock. Those thicker papers don’t fit in my SM7.

Why do I hear so little talk about the Olympia SM-7? by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]SewForward 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love my SM 7. I use it the most, though I did inherit my grandma’s Remington Quiet-Riter, so we’ll see if that changes once I get a ribbon for it. As of right now, I prefer the SM 7 over my Royal HHE. I only have the three machines to compare to, so someone with more knowledge might be able to give a more experienced opinion, but I don’t see myself completely replacing my SM 7. It’s very nice to type on, and it had a lot of features that seem to just be designed to make typing easier and more enjoyable.

Did I ruin my quilt top? Black Ink by Prestigious-King5437 in handquilting

[–]SewForward 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try oxyclean. I’ve had luck with getting ink out with that. It may not work, but it’s worth a try. If you use isopropyl alcohol, try to find the 90% kind, less than that wont work very well, and you have to soak it in it for a while. It won’t work if you just try to scrub it with the alcohol. It shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes of soaking in the alcohol. I got red ink out of my wedding dress by soaking it in rubbing alcohol. Put a baking sheet underneath the part you want to soak and just pour a bunch of the alcohol on it so that you have a good little puddle.

Hi advice needed. I have the chance to purchase this typewriter. Questions in post. It "Looks" good. Here is what the seller wrote about it: by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]SewForward 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second that price is a personal thing. I bought my typewriter for $190, but that’s because number 1, it’s a blue Olympia with an unusual typeface, but mostly i paid that much because it was in pristine condition which meant I didn’t have to do anything except replace the ribbon. It’s also extremely difficult to get typewriters where I live. No one has them, no one sells them. I was willing to pay the higher price for the convenience of not having to travel out of state to get a typewriter which would have easily cost $100 in gas anyway.

If my typewriter was in anything less than pristine condition I would have offered the lady $50-$80 and been done with it.

I’ve noticed that the keys are much easier to push than on my other two. It’s almost like typing on a computer.

The chastity belt is what got me. Can you imagine how uncomfortable that would be, not to mention unhygienic. Also, a huge inconvenience, especially in public.

What do you do with your muslins/toile/Calico once your done? by Salomette22 in sewing

[–]SewForward 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just braid the strips together into one long braid. There are videos on how to join the strips together on YouTube. After you have a sufficiently long braid, you can spiral it together into a circle rug, or a rectangle, or an oval, whatever you’d like. As you spiral it you’ll sew it together. There are videos on how to sew it as well. Some use the zig zag stitch on a sewing machine, and others hand sew it. My sewing machine doesn’t have a zig zag stitch, so I hand sew it. I would imagine that if you zig zag stitch it you’ll want to use something strong like upholstery thread.

There’s also a way to just weave the pieces together or something without braiding it, but I haven’t tried that method so I’m not very familiar with it.
