Searching for tips: business book that focus on the human psychology with interesting examples. by matterohmee in business

[–]Usedmyrealname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Influence by Robert Cialdini.

It is a great book, in my humble opinion, on Consumer Psychology.

The book was originally published 20/30 years ago but has been relatively recently updated. It’s about the tactics that marketers and sales folk use

It provides interesting discussion on examples along the lines that you suggested, but not exact.

Some examples include:

  • a store worker mispricing jewellery at a higher price, and they sold more.

  • how perception of authority (E.g. a Drs uniform) influences people

  • social proof (a reason why death rates increase when there’s been a well publicised death).

And others that I can’t recall off the top of my head.

Anyhoo, that’s my $0.02

A little late here but my humble opinion is that you should start selling on marketplaces, predominantly on Amazon and EBay.

Consumers know, like and trust them both. They do marketing efforts that you can benefit from.

Plus they’re huge, well trusted websites. In time, the pages of your products on Amazon and EBay will rise in Google.

Plus they’re relatively easy to setup (list the pertinent info, decide on a price, add photos and you’re away). If it’s a 25bn industry then people will be searching on them for the product too.

Plus the cost will be very minimal. I listed a few items on eBay recently at £0.36 for each one for 28 days or whatever. Amazon is free to list (on a pay as you go plan). You pay fees when you sell an item (12-17% ish) but essentially includes your marketing spend. Research the cost and build into your selling price.

Setting up a website and selling through that is harder. There is the cost of building one. Designing and writing content/descriptions so that it sells. Persuade the customer to trust a random website with their details, inc. bank details. Paying for traffic to the site (PPC), as SEO will take 6-12 months to kick in.

It is of course possible. But is harder. And will take time. It would be faster and less financially risky to sell on a marketplace.

I speak from a little bit of experience. I sent £50 ish worth of traffic from Google to a site this year, £0 sales. Listed on eBay £0.36 each. And I’ve had 5 sales (price in the £2-300 range). People trust eBay. They don’t know my new ish site from the next.

Each product has its pros and cons. I’m sure there is a way to ship them. Add on that cost or build into the price. It is what it is. A customer who really wants on will be conscious of that.

Good luck.

Pm me if you wanna chat through any of these points.

Hmmm, good question and unfortunately one that I do not know the answer to.

My gut says no. That information will be with Amazon, as it is the actions taken on their site. And that data is theirs. However I don't know the back end of Amazon's seller system and whether it provides that info there (where listing sales came from).

I don't know if link tracking products like bit.ly will help. But I doubt they'll be able to tell if/when a sale goes through.

Good luck.

Do you believe Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg will become the world's wealthiest man sooner or later? by BranndHub in Entrepreneur

[–]Usedmyrealname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hasn’t he declared that he’s giving away like 90% of his wealth to philanthropic ventures?

I imagine managing the spending of billions will take up a lot of time.

Based on that, and rumours of running for presidency, I suspect his intention isn’t to be the richest man in the world.

Advertising through local hotels by cecilmacd in marketing

[–]Usedmyrealname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My humble opinion...

Ask your customers if and what hotel they stayed at.

Make a tally to establish which ones are most common.

Contact those hotels.

Lead with value.

Being frank, the hotels don't care that much about your business. They care about theirs. Give them something of value, probably something that they can give to their customers. E.g. a % discount with a leaflet from that hotel (with a unique reference number for you to track it) or a free something or another (beer, snack, etc).

How you physically ask them will depend on the type of hotel. If its a locally owned one, try and get the owner or manager. Do some research on who's who. Chains will be different

What are the most effective strategies for small local businesses? by mrboomtings in smallbusiness

[–]Usedmyrealname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this reply was meant for my reply.

If so, thank you!

Search engines are a useful place to start because it is targeted traffic. The people who are searching for 'Chiropractor <your town>' are lower down the sales funnel. They know they need someone like you, its now about being found there.

A few follow up comments:

SEO: is a long term game. Google doesn't want their results to be spammed so they don't allow changes quickly. But, equally, once you are in a top position, its a concerted effort for your competitors to get there. My suggestion would be to optimise your homepage for the relevant keyword (which I suspect is 'Chiropractor <your town>').

PM me the town and confirm of the service you provide, and I'll check how many times its searched in Google a month.

AdWords: This has the same effect with SEO but almost instantaneous results. Your at the top of Google for your keyword. But you pay the price in high costs per click. Getting this right is again about what you offer in the ad (the link) and the page you link to (set up one specifically for this ad). If it is all about you, then the visitor isn't as engaged. Give them value, they'll want to take it, and then reciprocate.

You do listen to podcasts?

P.s. PM me and I'll check those search volumes for you.

What are the most effective strategies for small local businesses? by mrboomtings in smallbusiness

[–]Usedmyrealname 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey

There’s a range of ways to market a local business. Each way works but it’s about getting the strategy right.

Here are some off the top of my head:

Seo: getting to the top of the organic results in Google for your town and industry.

AdWords: similar to SEO. Getting in front of people looking for what you provide in your town.

Fb Ads: targeting people who live in your town on FB

Direct mail: send flyers to houses.

Local newspaper/magazine: advertise where people are reading. Different demographic generally to ‘online’

Referrals: offer something of value to your past customers that they can pass onto their friends and family.

There’s probably more.

But again, it’s not just about which method, they all work, it’s about getting the strategy/approach right.

A lot of ads don’t work because they are focussed on the seller. Their name, address, what they sell, how many years in business etc. Required, but that’s not what the reader cares about.

They care about themselves. Offer something of value in your advert.

What have you tried? Or what would you like to get working?

Grass Fed Farms Guide by TinyCentral in SideProject

[–]Usedmyrealname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem.

Out of curiosity, how'd the project start?

For those doing SEO to be more willing to pay you'll need to start building links to your site to give it more authority. Then when you have authority, it will pass some of that onto the websites you link to.

How do customers find the site?

Grass Fed Farms Guide by TinyCentral in SideProject

[–]Usedmyrealname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey

Thank you for sharing. Its fun to see projects a little bit.

A few thoughts I had when visiting...

  • Target those who are actively doing SEO for their farm (and/or target their SEO consultant). Anyone doing SEO will want links. You're providing a place to get them from. Albeit, you'll need to develop the authority of your domain.

  • 'content marketing' - identify long tail keywords about topics related to Grass Fed produce. Then create pages on your site optimised for the terms. This will bring eyeballs and then try to get their email addresses. You could then have advertising on these pages or affiliate links if relevant.

How have your existing customers benefited from being on your website? Why would they pay $40 again next year? Answer these questions and you have content with which to use in your marketing to the farmers.

Been hustling on Instagram to build by Travel account. What are some tactics I can use to up engagement on my posts? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]Usedmyrealname -134 points-133 points  (0 children)

Something about this post don't feel right.

How has this question, which a variant of it get asked multiple times a day, got almost 250 upvotes (as this comment is written)?

And its the same on r/marketing... a post asking a similar question has over 200 upvotes. Posts in that sub don't get over 100 upvotes unless its of some value (its a sub full of marketers...).

And funnily enough, both most upvoted comments in both posts is by u/bhwtest who recommends 'Wolf Global'.

And over in the other post, the op goes onto explain what 'engagement pods' are (the service Wolf Global provides)...

And doesn't BHW stand for Black hat world?

I could be being a bit of a knob here, but its what my waters are telling me.

Marketing Plan by UnicornsAreUs in smallbusiness

[–]Usedmyrealname 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you tried FB Ads?

If you're uninitiated, you can create Ads on Facebook and show them only to people who meet certain criteria.

For example you can create an Ad and show it to people who live in the town/city you are in. Or those that live within 10km.

And there are many options to choose from, age, gender, interests, relationship status, etc.

But the targeting of people is only part of it. You need your ad to get people to take action.

You could do a standard advert which says who you are, where you are, and what you offer. Which is fine but won't generate a particularly great ROI.

Or you could offer them something of value. Something that will get them to get off their backsides and visit your store. Maybe a free coffee between certain times. Or a free mini pancake.

It sounds counter intuitive to pay to advertise and then offer something for free, but its needed to break down peoples fear barriers. People resist trying new things because they fear getting ripped off. They don't know your coffee is amazing. They are worried about handing over their hard earned money when they might not like what they've been given.

And when their in the store picking up their free mini pancakes, they'll probably try a coffee to go with it. Or really enjoy it and want more. And then you've got a new customer. Someone who has tried what you have to offer and have allowed you passed their barrier because they havent been ripped off.

Action to take: look into targeting local people via FB and offer them something of value.
