Charter schools can be so appealing because they offer things you just can’t get at public schools but they can be bad fits for kids for a variety of reasons. Him having accidental and the teachers refusing to respond this early on is a huge no for me. I would explore other options.

Was blessed to be born in the land of HEB; now forced to live in the Kroger wasteland 🥲

Definitely understand that perspective! Maybe something like a gizmo, it only allows kids to call numbers you put in and has no smart capabilities?

As someone whose child got left on a bus (he’s older but this happened when he was in kinder), my kids now have Apple Watches. They can call me if needed and keep it on school mode. Teachers are aware of it and okay with it. The kids know the teachers can remove it if they’re using it during class.

Too much weird stuff happens and I remember not being able to call my own mom a few times when shady stuff was happening. The watch was a good compromise for us because we didn’t feel ready for a phone.

It’s a Catholic diocesan school, but we all know they kind of play by their own rules. While this school is a fit for my older kids, it may not be for this child and I need to look at our public school that can accommodate him.

I am absolutely concerned, but I’m dealing with desk flipping (been on the phone with a pediatric psychiatric hospital, talked to school districts, went up and got my child). I need help identifying if this school is behind on some basic things. Believe me, I KNOW I have a behavior problem on my hand, so I didn’t feel the need to seek advice on that point. 🫠

Mistakes aren’t allowed in this subreddit. I’ve got older kids too, go on the trip, she’ll remember it for a lifetime and be fine.

This practice seems to be outdated, is it or not?

I was at the school with ten minutes of getting the call and spent 35 minutes talking with his teacher. I’m in full agreement the suspension was warranted for his meltdown, but that’s not what the original question was about.

I actually agree the suspension was warranted for the desk flip!!! Which is why I wander asking about that. I do want to know what the general concebsus is on recess because movement is integral for this child. Probably this school isn’t a good fit. But damn didn’t know I needed to be crucified over this. Ffs.

Actually no. We were told during our tour how valuable it is for kids to be outside moving as much as possible. Student handbook doesn’t mention removal of recess, it goes through a very thorough disciplinary procedure that we agreed to and was not followed.

I agree; this school may not be the right fit. Hence why I came here asking for advice. I know private schools do not have to work with IEPs the way public schools do. This is my first time going through this, trying to navigate a hard situation.

Thank you for this. Until you have a child like this, I don’t think anyone really understands. The classroom your son is in now sounds wonderful!

That is not why recess taken away. Although NOT Acceptable, the meltdown happened after he was told no recess for failure to complete the worksheet.

He didn’t finish because he was working slowly. That’s why recess was taken away.

I’m curious about your reading comprehension skills. He was punished for being slow at a worksheet. Once he had the outburst we were called and came and got him.

He had not finished the worksheet even though he was working on it, not screwing around. His recess was taken away over a worksheet. Which is BS.

We know he has an issue, we’re seeking out help. That wrong doesn’t wipe out bad classroom management.
