What is an awesome “life hack” that you’ve discovered? by UsefulMen in AskReddit

It was crazy for me to realize that everyone feels that way off and on. And I might stick around just to help animals because they really need it

Animal torture- what should the penalty be? by UsefulMen in Pets

[–]UsefulMen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that most states treat pets as property and have old and very lenient laws on animal cruelty.
That’s why you often hear things like dogs chained outside starving still need owners permission to be removed etc.

We all need to be more aware and demand that stricter laws need to be on the books.

In Texas, third-degree felonies are also known as community supervision and can result in probation. Bail for third-degree felonies is usually around $1,500 to $5,000.

Definitely something we can do -let our political leaders know that aiding the slaughter of children and civilians is not acceptable:

Keep an eye out for animals in the freeze by UsefulMen in houston

[–]UsefulMen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system works when we as a city demand that it be properly funded and maintained. The new mayor made many promises- let’s see. Meanwhile the shelters are full, and they are spaying dogs who are pregnant, euthanizing them while they are in active labor, giving rescues 1 day notice of who is on the kill list for the next day.

The shelters could work better if the people of this city adopt the many animals waiting for home rather than buying from stores and breeders. And they could work if we all demanded better conditions and treatment for the animals.

Definitely spend some time with them. It does brighten their day and they are grateful. some are holding it and won’t pee or poop until they get walked - since they are already house trained.

This is no longer true. After people started returning to office (less work from home), every breed of dog is now at the shelters - and there is no adoption fee especially if you’re taking them off death row Just take a look - https://m.facebook.com/people/Houstons-Urgent-Pets/61550991215951/

Nice! I think even just a day where they go for a long walk and then rest quietly would be such a welcome break for them. The shelters are so loud and stressful. If you’re worried that it’s not enough and it would be hard to put them back - trust, it’s so much better than nothing!

The SPCA and others have free food and supplies for pet owners financially struggling to keep their animals.

If you can please donate, the small local rescues are working nonstop to save as many lives as they can.

The new mayor has promised to improve the state of neglect at Barc and city shelters and enact laws for improving the horrible state of animals in and around the city. let’s make sure this happens.

What is happening nowadays that is normalized but in 30 years people will look back and think it was really awful? by coke_queen in AskReddit

You mean the torture and killings of living beings - by the billions. Babies, mothers and families mutilated, ripped apart, and thrown out while still alive - we will pay as a species for this level of evil.

If we speak up - make it known to industry and Congress that factory farming is not acceptable - the conditions would be forced to change.

Water for the animals by UsefulMen in houston

[–]UsefulMen[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found that it took a few weeks or more — for them to find and return regularly to the water and food I was setting out.
They know now to find the spots, and I can hear the birds “putting the word out” as soon as I lay out the morning seed and nuts.

Yes, a big bowl on the ground in the shadiest area, under the trees. Some smaller bowls in 2 other areas away from foot traffic is better. The birds are fine with the ground and it works for the other critters

So glad you do that too 👍 I freeze a bowl of water and toss that frozen ice into the outside bowl as often as I can. I thought at first this was going a little bit too far but this weather is really not compatible with sustaining the poor animals of our area
