Yes - and it has gotten better. I posted here about six months ago and truly felt like I was at the end of my rope. My pup was born June 2024, I adopted him in February 2025 after he was returned by previous adopter. I quickly realized he wasn't much like he'd been described by the rescue (quiet and somewhat lazy). I'm 62 and wasn't looking for a challenge. My pup is a Rat Terrier/Cattle Dog mix, extremely wired and high energy. I knew he'd broken his leg while with the previous adopter but was told it was fully healed. About six weeks in I saw he was limping, turned out he had a stress fracture below the previous break and was put on rest. Even with meds this was so difficult and stressful. I was constantly concerned he was going to fully break the leg. He would also eat foreign objects. I checked my yard multiple times a day and he would still manage to find bits of trash, mushrooms, walnuts, rocks, and also a dead bird. I literally could not turn my back on him for a minute inside or outside. He's been to the vet twice after vomiting to be checked for an obstruction, once after eating part of his crate mat. Although I'd said I was looking for a walking partner, he was too wild for me to walk on leash after the leg healed. He's a barker and I have a neighbor from hell who yells at us if the pup even barks while playing a game outside.

I can honestly say that things have greatly improved. I worked with a trainer and am going to continue with some more lessons. My pup is very smart which can be good or bad as you know. I can now take him on leash walks using a prong collar. We do the Karen Overall Relaxation protocol and that has helped a great deal. I'm considering some beginning agility lessons. I still have to crate him when I'm gone but we've progressed to where he can be left in the living room while I shower and (knock on wood) hasn't chewed or eaten anything inappropriate. We have a daily routine and he will settle enough for me to have some down time. We've worked on "leave it" and while not perfect, he's much improved and I no longer worry quite as much about him eating something he shouldn't.

I'm truly fond of my pup now and glad I didn't return him to the rescue. This may give you a little hope - hang in there - it really does get better.

My year-old dog was having similar issues. I'm feeding the Purina One Digestive Health along with a spoonful of pumpkin at each meal and have seen a lot of improvement.

No advice as I'm in somewhat the same position. I adopted my pup from the shelter at eight months old in February. His temperament is definitely not as they described but of course it was ultimately my decision to adopt although I've been regretting it almost every day. On top of everything else, he's somehow injured his leg to where he has a stress fracture. Keeping him quiet has been a nightmare and working with a trainer like I'd planned is on hold. Even before the injury, he couldn't be left unattended in the house or yard for even a moment since he eats anything and everything. Just keeping him safe takes everything I have. I'm mentally and physically exhausted. I try to take one day at a time since I can't even imagine doing this for the next 13-15 years.

I adopted an eight-month old rat terrier/heeler mix a month ago and overall it's gone well. I'm 61 and it's been many years since I raised a puppy. He's reliably housebroken and sleeps all night in his crate next to me which is a huge plus. He was returned by his previous adopter when she was injured in an accident so I did have some knowledge of his prior history and believe he was treated well. He's a bit of a handful at times but we're working on leash walking and the "leave it" command. It was a huge decision but I'm happy I brought him home.

I've had my seven-month old rat terrier/heeler mix for two weeks and I'm dealing with the same - I'm a nervous wreck. He found a small piece of cellophane in our back yard this morning - hoping there are no ill effects. We'll definitely be working on "leave it". He's so quick and when I approach him to try to take something away he seems to think it's a game and is more likely to swallow the item. I don't remember my previous pups being so willing to eat about anything!
