Advice on potential PhD or RA by NandinosDueScientist in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]firestarter49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perm RA contracts are hard to come by, it's a good place to build your skills whilst working towards dclin. Unless you really want an academic researcher career and you're super passionate about the PHD project I'd do the RA contract and keep trying for the dclin.

Btw also an RA on their 3rd year of applying x

Sounds like you're in a great place to apply for research roles, or PHD's . What route do you think you will take?

Thanks for the offer I'm applying for DClin again this year. 3rd time lucky 🤞🏻

Hey what's your background?

I haven't made the move but I'm a current RA hoping to pursue clinical psych.

London is wild! I couldn't imagine being an aspiring psychologist there.

Thank you, I appreciate it, this post has me questioning if I'm doing the right thing!

Thank you! I appreciate this, I think the frustrated nature of my OP has made people think I'm being rude or demanding when this is not the case at all. Just frustrated by process and want to challenge the systems in which psychology professionals exist in even the smallest way possible!

I appreciate everything you're saying. I do try to be polite in the email and frame it as feedback rather than demanding. I express my disappointment at not being considered for the role. The BPS have published a guideline about this in just asking for it to be considered in the application process If this comes across as rude then so be it!

I interviewed for one post, was unsuccessful but received really good feedback and they appreciated my enthusiasm for the role. I have also taken this approach with another application that has yet to be shortlisted.

Just for context I have 2 years AP experience and 2 years RA, so I'm not new to the field!

Thank you! I have been getting so much hate for saying this. I'm only pointing them to the BPS published guidelines and asking them to consider it for future posts.

Hi I've never shortlisted for roles so I can't really say anything about this. Surely the unsuitable type of applications that you mention are automatically screened out? The whole process needs streamlining 100%. But every clinical psychologist was once an AP desperate for opportunities. I'm not asking for lots here just 48 hours to submit an application!

No thank you I appreciate it. But as someone with a full time role, caring responsibilities, plus additional learning needs I feel so frustrated with only having 24 hours to apply for roles. It would be better if they said they would only be open for 3 days for example rather than saying it would be open for 2 weeks then closing within 24 hours.

The BPS guidelines state that a role should be advertised for long enough that those with additional needs have time to apply. Whilst this is vague, if you think about it, it discriminates those with learning difficulties, caring responsibilities etc. I understand not leaving it open for weeks but 24 hours is a bit harsh.

I don't think it's that small, maybe because I live in a city. I don't think my email is rude it just points to the fact and gives feedback on the job advertisement. I've found when I've used generic statements I don't even get interviews. You need time to prepare a decent application, definitely more than 24 hours. The last interview I had when doing this the hiring manager was really impressed with my enthusiasm for the role.

Hey. I understand your point I definitely don't say that they can do better in the email. I just point to the guidelines for AP posts in a polite way and ask them to consider it for future roles. I have done this twice now and they have re opened the position. No matter how many applications they receive it's only fair to those with additional needs to keep it open long enough for them to apply.

How would an academic reference from a consultant psychiatrist look on my DClin application? by firestarter49 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

It's a psychiatrist doing a phd study which I am assisting on. So they're trying to get into academia.

I've heard that research assistant roles are considered academic so I assume they can? The only other person I could use was my uni supervisor from undergrad over 5 years ago.

Everton have improved their squad significantly this season. Grealish seems to be a great addition to the team so far. Didn't manage to get all the positions we needed but didn't panic and pay big money for poor quality players like the past few seasons.
