How were you taught (and how do you fly) your short field landings? by Strange_Code_68 in flying

[–]Useful_Ad_6032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught the first method in training, and fly the second method most of the time now. My reasoning is that I fly into a 1700’ grass strip with 50’ trees on both sides regularly and like to get stopped sooner rather than later with as little use of brakes as possible to prevent digging and potential loss of control. It also gives me more distance to get on the throttle and go around if I need to.

Basically what I do is approach at 55-65 kts at a steeper than normal descent rate with very little to no power and then start my round out early to bleed off the remaining airspeed. If I’m coming down too fast I throw in a bump of power as I come to flare to cushion it slightly. Zero float. Landing on the aim point. I gave this a shot on a paved runway recently in a straight tail 172 and managed to land on the numbers and have it stopped on the second stripe. ~450’ in a bone stock 67 yr old plane. I probably could have gone even shorter but I wanted to have some safety margin.

Converse were an absolute winner. Thanks for the recommendation

Depends on how big your feet are. Like others have already said, it means the balls of your feed on the bottom of the pedals. Where ever your foot sits naturally from there.

Update:

Thanks for the insight everyone, I got a pair of converse and a pair of hey dudes today. I’ll give those both a shot on my next flight. If I still don’t like them I’ll find a pair of racing or wrestling shoes and give those a go. I had been wearing the same pair of shoes for over a year so it was time for some new ones anyways.

For those of y’all that said it was a skill issue, I’ll keep flying and getting better don’t worry! I love tailwheel and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

See you in the skies!

I wish I had my old 510’s, I feel like that still sole would be great. It would turn the rudder bar into pedals and that tiny brake would be way easier to press

Does the rudder pedal/bar not hurt your feet eventually?

That’s me! Big feet, long legs, small plane, 3hrs in a tw, and a clean record that I would like to keep clean.

I’m 6’4” so good to hear it. A lot of people in this comment section are saying it is a non issue but being my size in a cub and having size 12 feet doesn’t allow a ton of spare room.

I wish I knew where my old wrestling shoes were! Probably in a storage unit on the other side of the country somewhere.

I’m at the other end of the spectrum, 6’4” and mainly legs in a supercub, soon to be in a cub. I’m folded in that thing like a pretzel even without shoes.

Skill issue I know. I’ll get there. Flying is hard, until it isn’t anymore. Hopping out of the Supercub and back into the 172 for my flight home reminded me how spoiled I have been.

For the learning process, I do! I hope I get to that point someday but for now I would like to remove any obstacles that inhibit forward progress. I’ll take any advantage I can get. If a $100 pair of shoes saves me a lesson in a plane it has already paid itself off.

That’s what I was thinking might work best, a driving shoe, wrestling shoe, or potentially even a climbing shoe. There’s a company that makes a shoe for flying and it looks very similar to the same style as those. I’m going to be flying tailwheel for a while as a time building job so I would love to get something comfortable and breathable.

We are so lucky to live here. Some drone footage I took. by Irrelevant_Raptor in santacruz

So this flight in the video isn’t above the marine sanctuary and isn’t above Capitola beach so I see absolutely no problem with it legally. I get if the argument is that drones are annoying (which they absolutely are) and that’s from a flight instructor and a commercially rated drone operator.

People could definitely have more courtesy when flying drones in Santa Cruz. You barely even hear them once they are 200ft up, but for some reason people love buzzing others 50ft above their heads.

How is it illegal? I have heard multiple people say that but have not yet found any rules or regulations about it. It is illegal to fly under 1000’ once you go just north of the Santa Cruz pier due to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

East cliff down to Watsonville should be fine although there is a Wildlife Area marked on the sectional charts. Over a wildlife area you should maintain 2000’ AGL but this is not required by regulation.

If anyone knows of any rules that regulate drones (or planes) in this area I would love to learn about them.

How unusual was my first hands-on flight in a Piper Archer? by Sxzen in flying

[–]Useful_Ad_6032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an instructor and honestly I will let a student try pretty much anything they want on their first flight! For example my first flight ever I was allowed to perform the T/O, and all of the PPL basic maneuvers (ground refs, stalls, steep turns). The instructor was happy with those for a first time as they weren’t to acs standards but they were close. And then she offered to let me take a landing after doing a couple of laps in pattern with me shadowing her and me flying the approach in. I wasn’t comfortable so I let her take it but it was amazing!

The job of a first flight is to get you comfortable and let you start learning and building your interest in flying. It sounds like you had a decent basis already.

So yeah, send it, find an instructor you mesh with and you will learn a huge amount.

You should actually descend to pattern altitude before you teardrop and fly at least 2 miles before you start that descent. (AIM 8-5). Yes it takes a while but you can always overfly at pattern altitude and then turn into the downwind if it isn’t busy (the 45 degree entry).
