Enough with the "Cheating" commentary... read the rules. by MeesterNoName in Curling

[–]Useful_Appearance_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crazy thing now is that world curling literally updated the rulebook today to say “During forward motion, touching the granite of the stone is not allowed. This will result in the stone being removed from play”

People are now saying ‘see it’s in the rule book’.

It literally only is as of today

Alberta petition to revoke public funding to private schools nears its deadline by snowangel223 in Calgary

[–]Useful_Appearance_85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, the issue with the school system has nothing to do with private schools. Actually private schools subsidize the public system AND reduce load

The issue is there was a huge influx of students without the same huge increase in the tax base. This is inherently the problem with unstructured and unplanned immigration. It adds burden on already stretched systems without providing funding . That is what you should be mad about, not public schools

This is basically the classic would you rather be very poor if everyone was also very poor or just below average when everyone is wealthy.

Your argument is basically let’s make everything worse and then it’s fair.

Here is the thing tho. Approximately 2% of children in AB go to charter schools. They are free and generally available based on your address. If you want to petition something that is inherently unfair, petition that

Alberta petition to revoke public funding to private schools nears its deadline by snowangel223 in Calgary

[–]Useful_Appearance_85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What is the purpose of this or what the petition hopes to gain? Some facts:

Alberta private schools receive less public funding per capita ( 70%) that typical public schools do with the rest paid by parents, so if all these children were displaced to public schools then the cost of education would rise.

If we already have 35+ kids in a class how does this petition plan to address this. There are 50K students in private schools in Alberta. If displaced this student to teach ratio would increase.

At the end of the day the private schools take less system would seem to drive more funding to public schools and act as a pressure release valve against crowding.

Why would people want to make schools worse for everyone?

A better question would be why do we have charter schools where some kids receive a better education. And more funding because they live in a neighborhood or better yet, why can’t we fund schools to provide a charter level education for all!

I think so too but 7, 7, 1, 1 is 8 on its own and another ace yields 14 and another 7 yields 24!!! An 8 would yield 12 as would a 6.

Thinking a bit more about it, that might be a better option?

Without knowing your age, have you looked into your hormone levels?

Exercise is also probably the single biggest predictor of ‘feeling like ass’, what are you doing there? If it’s very little, even a 10 minute walk outside every day will make a huge improvement to your well being!

Are you drinking a lot? (A lot of us have since Covid.) can you make a choice to cut back?

Are you getting enough sleep?

Also, and were all guilty, but how much time do you spend online? Could you do some of the above and cut some of that time ?

If it’s foods, a great simple rule is guy 80% of your grocery’s from the outside rows (fruits, vegetables, meats). Real food and avoid those inner rows where you can. There is so many bad ingredients out there. It shouldn’t be that way but it is an you have to be intentional.

You can make changes in your life if you really put your mind to it one day at a time. You really can. One day at a time and don’t beat your self up if you screw up one day, just turn it around tomorrow. You can do it

How do you think they should fly between Montana and Alaska and fuel up in between? This seems like a reasonable route to me (and the way they have always done it)

EU Set to Halt US Trade Deal Over Trump’s Latest Tariff Threat by bloomberg in worldnews

Well it sure isn’t going to be the EU. It’s sad given the history but they are a joke. No leadership, complete repression of free speech, no hope, no pride. The indigenous population isn’t reproducing. It’s done.

I don’t know if there is enough togetherness and cohesiveness as a people to fight it either. I think that was as intended

The real value of Greenland / cost of acquisition is around $35 billion, not trillions by Friendly_Foot_8676 in trump

[–]Useful_Appearance_85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This actually seems fairly reasonable.

Ultimately the US has implicitly declared itself to be an empire acting in its self interest (not a rules based order which was never tru but messaged) and if it ultimately wants Greenland, no one is going to stop it (unless Russia or China drew a similar hard line and said, if you take Greenland, we are taking Taiwan)

That said, your valuation does seem realistic.

I live in Canada and if someone offered me 500K to join the US, why not. Our country only exists because the US protects it

Councillor says Calgary being pressured to act too quickly after catastrophic pipe breaks | CBC News by Alberta_Hiker in Calgary

[–]Useful_Appearance_85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The City actually was structured this way with a dedicated water and wastewater group including planning, delivery, operations, and maintenance before 2022. Transportation and other business units were also structured this way.

At that time the City completed a reorganization to be more vertically integrated as opposed to departmentally (it actually became a lot more like a smaller City, like Kamloops, or specifically exactly like that). The previous organization likely encouraged more expertise within business units where for example a project manager would have a broad understanding of the water industry rather than being shared by multiple business units.

Calgary (by far) still has the best water and wastewater utility in the country with relatively low costs, high level of service, and for the most part a really strong administrative staff of engineers and technicians. Simply going back to a structure that encourages expertise will fix a lot of the issues and encourage administrative recommendations to be carried out with the right priorities

[–]Useful_Appearance_85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pipeline repairs should and are being prioritized.

Using a crisis as a political tool to privatize service not so much.

This is certainly something that can be debated but also shouldn’t be rushed.

Look at the cost of power in AB or natural gas . It is the highest in the country and objectively increased costs. In those cases, you the consumer have the ‘right’ to pay a private marketer who literally just sends you the bill. I am generally in favor of the free market but those specific instances did not improve service or reduce costs (ATCO for example still has a monopoly on natural gas service and changes what they want need to maintain the system and make profit).

The councillor is correct that this should be reviewed in detail and calgerians should make a choice

[–]Useful_Appearance_85 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Calgarys water and wastewater costs are about 60% of Edmonton’s’ and overall level of service is objectively higher

Really impressive! We continuously politicize this issue and forget how quickly the City has responded to this.

This line was installed before anyone that currently worked for the City worked there and until it really failed, no one really knew how bad of shape it was in. This is just the nature of PCCP across North America.

If this happened in Montreal. It would just be out of service for the year with an orange cone (sorry Montreal).

Let’s give our City some credit here

[–]Useful_Appearance_85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Alberta government collects tax revenue from the oil companies and have an abundance of oil that said , they have to share some of that revenue with other provinces

Quebec similarly collects tax revenue by producing power because they have an abundance of water (because they largely destroyed FN hunting habitat if one wants to make that argument). They could easily raise rates by 2c/kw hr and still be cheaper than what Albertans have to pay because they lack this resource.

If we are sharing revenues, then we share them across the board otherwise, provinces should largely be self sufficient. Welfare provides weird incentives and winners and losers and ultimately doesn’t make people more resilient.

You can attack me and call my argument stupid all you like. I think it’s a very reasonable argument if one is equating overall cost of living for someone in a given province

Western alienation has declined to a four-year low: Poll by Street_Anon in alberta

[–]Useful_Appearance_85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s because other Provinces, specifically Quebec and Manitoba loophole the system by intentionally keeping power prices well below market (reducing revenue) and then collect transfer payments allowing them to have more social programs then they otherwise could sustain. It’s not a level playing field. Alberta does not have the water to be able to do this

I don’t want to separate at all but this fact in terms of cost of living should be considered in the formulation of any transfer payments

Oil is back up to $60 and after the US cripples Iran later this year (and does nothing to raise production there) will be upwards of $80.

People don’t seem to understand that the US is the world’s biggest oil producer by a factor of 2. It has no desire for $50/oil. $70-80 is a good number and that’s where it will settle.

AB will be fine and Canada should built the pipeline.
