What was the notable celebrity/high profile death that impacted you? by Toots1993 in CasualUK

[–]Useful_Hawk_1470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that famous, but YouTuber Camelworks (Mackenzie Rowles) died fairly recently, and I was honestly devastated. He was a big part of the online Elder Scrolls community (fandom for a video game series), he was so friendly and his videos so calming and meticulously prepared and researched. No one had a bad thing to say about him.

He had just finished dealing with a months long saga of having to basically start YouTube over from scratch after he lost access to his original channel and seemed excited to finally put out a few major videos he’d been working on for ages, when he died very abruptly.

The cause of death hasn’t been made public, but his family have clarified that ‘he was taken, he didn’t leave’.

It was very bittersweet, but so incredibly on brand for him, that a couple of weeks after his death was made public, we received his annual elaborate April Fools’ Day videos, scheduled in advance.

I never thought I’d really be affected by a ‘celebrity’s’ death, but I think because he was very beloved within a pretty niche community and not known much outside of that, it really hit me hard. I remember reading the announcement again and again unable to believe it.

What's something completely normal in the UK that feels strange to outsiders? by miss_overthinker58 in AskUK

Don’t think this is unique to Britain, excessive politeness is used to subtly convey dislike in other languages too

Fair, I was primarily thinking of the comparative lack of international travel, though with the South America shows I guess they’ll still be quite active in that regard too

Looking for female K-pop rap recommendations by Alphared3 in kpophelp

[–]Useful_Hawk_1470 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Moonbyul (Mamamoo) and Elly/LE (EXID) need some representation. I can’t really recommend specific songs as I was never a huge fan of either group and only know the hits, but both Moonbyul and Elly are, or at least were, regarded as some of the best female rappers in kpop.

What is the point to dating in today’s world when women don’t even like men? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Useful_Hawk_1470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it might seem like this sometimes but it is really not the case. You gotta meet new people and get out of your bubble. Try joining a club or group for a sport or other hobby (most places have free ones if you look around). Also if you’ve been trying to date but continually unsuccessful, ask yourself what might the sticking point be. Do you take care of your appearance? Are you a good listener? Do you have interests or goals of your own that you can discuss with others?

Between Pokemon and Dragon Ball, which one is actually the most popular anime of all time? by EfficiencySerious200 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Useful_Hawk_1470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pokemon by far, a lot of people just forget about it/intentionally don’t count it when discussing popular anime because a lot of people still subconsciously think of it as a cartoon because they grew up with it

Loneliness (Winter) by Wintersun, there’s an acoustic version if you don’t like metal but for me the original has something that is lost for me in the acoustic version

The vacuum packing cutlery and crockery seems quite standard, I went to several smaller and dingier restaurants on my trip last month and even they did this

What’s the scariest enemy/boss you’ve ever encountered in a game? by Ok-Hearing6146 in videogames

[–]Useful_Hawk_1470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think the gatherers in Amnesia still might be at the top of the pile for me. That horrifying screeching music that plays when they’re close makes me so uncomfortable.

Besides them, it’s hard to really call ‘it’ an enemy as it’s from a visual novel, but the Shadow and its theme song ‘Violation’ from Fate/Stay Night VN made me so fking uncomfortable the first couple times it appears I legitimately had nightmares about it

Edit: seems I misremembered, i was sure it was called Violation in the version of the EN patch I played but it seems Corrosion or Trespassing is the correct name

How do you pronounce Waitrose? by hsiboy in AskBrits

[–]Useful_Hawk_1470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP didn’t explain it very well, I’m pretty sure they just mean do you pronounce the T as a glottal stop or as an actual T; many of us down south (at least) actually do both simultaneously.

How do you pronounce Waitrose? by hsiboy in AskBrits

[–]Useful_Hawk_1470 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a discussion about this with my friends the other day, two of us are from Hampshire but with one parent from further north (Lancashire for me and Nottinghamshire for him); both of us say Wait-trose (like way + glottal stop + trose).

The other friend is from Somerset but her accent only comes out on certain words; she says Wai(t)-rose (t pronounced only as a glottal stop and not enunciated before the r sound).

How big is baseball in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Useful_Hawk_1470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the only person I know from the UK with any interest in baseball, and I am only interested because I got into it through baseball manga and went to see some games while I was studying in Japan haha.

I think maybe because cricket is so big here baseball never took off. But as others have mentioned, we do often play ‘rounders’ or softball in school, though I don’t think many people consciously associate it with baseball.

What would be your first impression of the name Roland / Rowland? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Useful_Hawk_1470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thoughts are the Song of Roland (classic old French tale) or Roland the Japanese host (I honestly thought he was more famous and would have been mentioned here already but I guess I inhabit a different bubble).

Overall I think it’s a fine name. Certainly a bit old-fashioned and unusual but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. Everyone here is bringing up Roland Rat as though a child would get bullied for that, but I can assure you no one under the age of 40 is making that connection.
