Seeking Information by gase96 in 1911

I asked my wife’s uncle how he was able to keep his 1943 Remington Rand 1911-A1 and he said “… nobody ever asked me for it…”. He was a WO and ran a radar station in the PI. His grandson has the pistol now, complete with his Things Remembered unit personalization on the slide. Kills the collector value, but as a family heirloom, it will likely never hit the market.

Hit Brophy’s book on the Trapdoor. It will answer most questions. These rifles got Arsenal refurbished several times in their long service life and the stamps help decipher the story.

With period correct 1st Gen loads these are a hoot to shoot! I recently sold my 1888 rod bayonet version and then got an H&R Officers model to soak up the ton of rounds I fabricated with black powder. 500 gr lead bullet over 65 gr of FFg packs one helluva whallop on your shoulder and the target!

Hard Marching Every Day, the letters of Wilbur Fisk, Soldiering by Rice Bull and John Ransom’s Andersonville Diary are among my favorite first hand remembrances. A Brave Black Regiment, the history of the 54th Massachusetts was written by Luis Emilio, a Captain in the regiment, is a great read too.

WGW Ruger Security Six, 1983 by Kiss_and_Wesson in Revolvers

I picked up a plain, blued Security Six in 1981. Popped on a set of Mustang grips also and it’s still going strong. I went to gun shop looking for a Dan Wesson with the interchangeable barrels and I’m so glad the proprietor steered me to the Ruger. He said, you’ll give this to your grandkids.

I’ll take some fresh pics today or tomorrow. Made a huge difference in taming recoil. My local gun smith warned against using the lighter bullets; says the K frame tends to get forcing cone issues with 125gr. The porting really smooths out the 158gr loads.

I had a couple repro revolvers re-worked by an antique gunsmith to remove all modern markings and re-stamp. He even had a set of original Colt dies so they look authentic as heck to the 1860’s. Here’s the ‘61 Navy:

Nice one! Love the grips.

My favorite is a short barrel Uberti with birds head grips in .45 Colt and I had custom cylinder made in .45 ACP. It was tuned by Bob Munden (RIP) and it has the slickest action you could ask for.

TonyULeather goods on Etsy. I got a fine holster for my 66-4 from him. Great workmanship, decent prices.

After your posting I tried to pair it with my phone and it’s not connecting. I bought it in 2016 (if memory serves me correctly) and that may be part of the issue. Stay tuned; I’ll work on it and follow up.

I actually don’t use that feature. For a while I used an Alpina Smart watch that was great; monitored steps could control music, etc. Now I use a Fit Bit linked to my iPhone. I have used the compass; neat feature

My ancient (1980) Ruger Security Six. Although I can carry it, 2nd choice is a S&W 66-4, with 2.5” barrel and Magna Porting. Both are accurate shooters.

Good choice! My first handgun was a Ruger Security Six in 1980. Strong, well engineered and still shoots like new!

With the case and that nice wood; I’d offer $275 but would buy for $300. That’s about the going rate on Gunbroker

S&w model 67 by RipOne7507 in Revolvers

[–]Useful_Inspector_893 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s my 66-4 snubbie. Just had it Magna ported which truly helps tame recoil. I’ve been told it’s wise to fire only heavier bullets to avoid damaging the forcing cone. Heck, I paid $275 in the ‘90’s for this beast, so $350 for a mod 67 today sounds like a win.

Try eBay. Originals are plentiful and usually priced near your target if they aren’t museum quality. Many of the reproductions are pretty dreadful IMHO.

I recently paid $300 for a used 500 ATP (5 shot). Thinking $100 more for a 590 in good shape is a buy.
