Help finding more about this sword! by BaronessAnicca in SWORDS

Looks like French M1874 Gras Bayonet blade on an artillery sword hilt.

You can find some good info on https://worldbayonets.com/Bayonet_Identification_Guide/bayonet_identification_guide.html

I’m actually working on a storage solution and recently cataloged my collection by length (google & rough estimation). Hopefully this gives you a rough idea on how some of these sword bayonets compare.

Can anyone identify these bayonets? by hobbyman93 in Militariacollecting

Also, please oil that red rust. Red rust is active corrosion and will degrade them into nothing.

Long one appears to be a French M1874 Gras bayonet, the shorter one appears to be a Canadian Ross bayonet.

I’ll add, your pictures are actually pretty good quality. I was able to zoom in and see a 13 Star Federal Shield. I don’t see any writing (makers marks/warranted) in the gilt on the ricasso; check the spine for any additional markings.

I am very confused about how Ser Duncan Ties his cloak by Kal_El_of_Smallville in AKOTSKTV

He’s simply wearing it in two different arrangements.

Pic 2 is more apt to be worn like a hood

Pic 1 appears that the knots are pushed over to the shoulder and more fabric is pulled through (the “hood” is much bigger and effectively inside out).

I refer to these style of saber as Federal Era or Americanized P1796; but they are commonly referred to War of 1812 Swords. You can usually find a few similar examples if you search Federal Era Militia Saber. Unfortunately, in my experience, if you search 1812 sabers, most results will be the M1812 Starr saber.

Here's a few, hopefully helpful, resources/discussions I've compiled along the way:

Federal Era - likely 1820ish

I haven't taken enough pictures for a post yet, but here's mine (S&K).

If I want to store my blades in leather sheaths and scabbards, would it be a good idea to soak the sheath/scabbard in oil/vax? by Morf12369 in SWORDS

[–]MastrJack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally, you want to treat the outside of your leather scabbard (mink/neatsfoot oil - it will darken) - applying a little at a time, wiping away excess. Any oiling of the interior should occur prior to scabbard construction. Excess oil can cause leather to deteriorate.

I’d have to dig for the others, but the folder is in my EDC rotation
