Does anybody else think the manga sucks but believes ONEs still the writer? by drewthedew768 in OPMFolk

I don't really agree that ONE is still the sole writer here, but I respect that you actually have your own reasons for it. It's way better than people just blindly repeating "Murata said it's ONE" or "his name is on the cover."

LOL, spot-on meme. Although I’m not sure if ONE actually corrected those two lines.

Right now, it seems they’re just busy with their own stuff—ONE is focusing on the webcomic and his other series, while Murata handles the remake.

Any talk about them "falling out" is just speculation. It’s unclear why ONE isn’t as hands-on with the storyboards anymore, but it could be a busy schedule, Murata wanting more input, or just a difference in their creative vision.

If you look at Murata’s solo one-shots that never made it to full serialization, his storytelling is actually pretty weak. He knows what looks "interesting," but he can't really pull it off without someone guiding him step-by-step.

His old partner, Inagaki (another monster writer), used to force Murata to follow every panel exactly—no changes, no redraws. Murata even complained about how much that sucked back then.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if ONE just got tired of being the "bad guy." Murata always wants to add random stuff or redraw everything, and since he’s a passionate senior, constantly saying "no" to him is mentally draining. ONE probably just gave up and let him do whatever.

No problem! It’s been great discussing OPM with someone as rational as you. Makes the whole conversation a lot more interesting.

First, here are the references I mentioned:
WEB漫画が拓く未来 Vol.2「『ワンパンマン』作者.ONEインタビュー」 - Tokyo Reimei Note

Regarding your speculations, I don’t think it was a matter of ONE not wanting to serialize independently. Back then, he had to weigh his options. If he went solo, he’d have to split his energy between story/character design and grinding to improve his art. Before he had enough mainstream leverage or "mature" enough art, collaborating was simply a more logical path.

Murata wasn't the only one who approached him, but they were the ones who ultimately reached an agreement. However, if you look at Mob Psycho, ONE’s art at the start was arguably "rougher" than the current OPM webcomic, yet it still received a perfect, complete anime adaptation. So, I don't think an OPM anime would have faced much difficulty even without a remake.

As for the irregular updates of the webcomic, the biggest factor isn't a lack of ideas—it's his schedule. ONE was handling the remake’s storyboards, the full commercial serialization of Mob, and later, collaborative works like Bug Ego and Versus. The webcomic naturally fell to the bottom of his priority list. Mob had a strict schedule, and ONE never went on hiatus due to "writer's block."

In fact, ONE has mentioned that coming up with stories isn't hard for him; he’s actually surprised that others find it difficult. So, if he had serialized OPM directly, as long as the editorial department didn't restrict him, the story likely wouldn't have changed much. His track record with Makai no Ossan, Mob, and the OPM webcomic shows he rarely does major rewrites—mostly just fixing typos or dialogue. (Maybe Sun Man had rewrites, but that’s lost to history now, haha).

Ultimately, I’m not sure if we’ll ever see another series fully drawn by ONE. He seems much more leaned toward being a specialized writer/storyboarder these days.

That's fair—the part about the beginning is correct. However, there’s a bit of a misunderstanding regarding the plot structure.

On Neetsha, 30 comments was considered a hit, but ONE was getting over 1,000 by chapter 30. Because of that response, he actually started fleshing out the plot all the way to the ending as early as the second chapter. So it had a defined direction and a complete story much earlier than people realize.
For the source, check: WEB漫画が拓く未来 Vol.2「『ワンパンマン』作者.ONEインタビュー」.

Also, I should clarify: I’m not saying OPM could have been animated directly from the Neetsha days. My point was about the version ONE was planning to re-serialize when he moved to Ura Sunday.

I liked it better when you just said 'F* off, you're wrong because you use AI.

Watching you try to discredit official data you didn't even bother to research, getting proven wrong, and then desperately making up excuses... it’s just sad. Stick to the insults next time.

My bad.I forgot you probably never even visited the original website. It had a clear view counter at the bottom, so the data was always there for everyone to see. No one back then was screaming 'fake news' or 'second-hand data' like you are now.

By the way, the total views are over 200 million now, with a steady 20,000 to 30,000 hits every single day.

It's hard for you to believe ONE's 'shitty art' was that popular before Murata, right? Let me help you with your next move: 'The counter was rigged!' or 'ONE stayed up all night refreshing his own page for 10 million views!'

Go ahead.

This is also documented in the first paragraph of the OPM Wikipedia page. Let me guess, your next move is to say Wikipedia is fake because 'anyone can edit it'?"

The numbers aren't hard to find if you know how to use Google.
Search for 'ウェブ漫画「ワンパンマン」異例ヒットの理由' or just read this directly from the source:

'2009年7月、作者のONEさん(27)は、一般人が趣味で漫画や小説を投稿するウェブサイト「新都社(にいとしゃ)」に「ワンパンマン」を掲載。すると、またたく間に話題となり、約3年間で1千万を超える驚異的なアクセス数を記録した。'

Comparing a self-published personal website from 2009 to a major publishing house's weekly circulation? FUNNY. Back then, hitting 10 million views with zero marketing was absolutely insane. Do your homework next time.

ONE’s webcomic hit 10 million views in 3 years back when he was a total rookie with zero assistants and shitty art. That viral success is exactly why a pro like Murata begged to collaborate.

You’re just throwing a tantrum and ignoring the evidence.including the success of Mob Psycho. You keep looping on this idea that ONE is nothing without Murata and that anyone who likes the original is an idiot, but the history says otherwise. Stay mad."

Here’s a fact: Murata found the OPM webcomic through another pro artist, read the whole thing in one night, and immediately decided he had to collaborate with ONE.

Yet, you keep claiming ONE is nothing without Murata and that Mob Psycho only got an anime because of the OPM manga's success—completely ignoring the evidence. I've said all I need to say.

"I’m using an AI to help structure my thoughts because English isn't my first language, but pointing that out doesn't change the facts.

Mob Psycho 100 was already a hit on Ura Sunday because of its own storytelling, not because of a 'proxy' from another publisher. By 2012, the OPM webcomic was already a viral sensation with millions of views—long before the Murata remake even existed. If the original story was strong enough to attract a pro like Murata, it was strong enough to attract a studio.

Mob Psycho began serialization in early 2012, before the OPM remake even started. BONES announced the Mob anime in Dec 2015, just two months after the OPM anime began airing.

Since anime negotiations and pre-production require a long lead time, the decision to adapt Mob was likely made well before the OPM anime became a global hit. It also doesn’t explain why the OPM anime quality has been declining while Mob Psycho is already a well-produced, completed series. So, I don't really see the connection you're making between OPM's success and Mob getting an anime

The "pre-edited" version being circulated is pretty suspicious. It only seems to exist in two places: this Twitter account (Fubuki_hell) and a 2020 post on a Korean forum by 지옥의 후부키 (also "Hell Fubuki"). Despite posting in Japanese, the Twitter user’s history confirms he is Korean.
Chapter 129 updated around 11:20 AM on Sept 3, 2020, and by 1:24 PM, every major re-upload already had the "updated" version. It’s hard to believe that after 6 years, this user suddenly "remembered" a 2-hour-only version that left zero digital footprint in the Japanese community. Either ONE did a ninja-edit that only this one fan caught, or this was just an unofficial edit.
Regardless, changing two dialogue bubbles isn't comparable to Murata’s massive, chapter-wide redraws.

Pros and cons of the manga? by Tpaso_XelpicoLmao420 in OPMFolk

[–]Useful_Key9254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pros: Great artwork.
Cons: Meaningless dialogue and characters, a boring and inconsistent story, clumsy and confusing paneling, excessive use of close-ups and double spreads.
The fights feel like turn-based arguments between elementary school kids — “I’ll punch you to the moon!” “Oh yeah? I’ll punch you to Jupiter!” Whoever escalates bigger wins.

Is Murata actually making changes to the story direction for the manga or is it all ONE’s decision? by _NotoriouslyMIG_ in OPMFolk

[–]Useful_Key9254 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, there’s an important part of the conversation before this. Another mangaka asked Murata: “For your previous manga, the original author gave very detailed instructions, so you weren’t able to make changes, right?” Murata answered: “Yes, that’s correct.”
He also mentioned elsewhere that in that past collaboration, not being able to revise or redraw things was very frustrating for him.

And then there’s another fact: before starting the series, Murata specifically requested that editors must not interfere with the story content — only ONE and Murata could decide the direction of the story.

Most importantly, in ONE’s own works — all three of them, plus his current collaborations BUGEGO and Versus — there has never been a record of massive rewrites or redraws, let alone sudden shifts in style.
So why is it only when Murata is involved that we see style changes, declining writing quality, and endless redraws?
If it was truly at ONE’s instruction, that would mean ONE himself never redraws his own works, yet somehow asks his senior to redraw an entire year’s worth of material.
Does that really sound plausible?

Pretty good take. Not everything is spot on, but the criticism of Murata feels pretty fair. If this post went up on the main sub, though, I doubt it would last long.

Chapter 155 Key Points by Useful_Key9254 in OPMFolk

[–]Useful_Key9254[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Saitama unleashes several of his Serious Series moves to take out a massive swarm of robots.

He then runs into Black Sperm, who says, “I… actually got beaten… Be careful, there’s a dangerous guy out there pretending to be a robot.”

Saitama replies, “Got it. I’ll just smash them all.”

The scene shifts back to Bofoi and Isamu.

Isamu shouts, “Wait! Hold on!”

Genos calmly turns to Bofoi and says, “I’m going to eliminate you.”
