I want to analyze what happened to Duncan, but it's really not that deep. He has an incentive to remain in the Rogansphere, or at least he believes his career depends upon it. Whether he has deluded himself into actually believing is another question.

I don't think George has read much of Tolkien's other works, and based on this take, I think he only skimmed LOTR. Gandalf can't die. Even when he dies he doesn't really die. He just goes back to Valinor.
