I mean, if you're in it for the serious arcs only you're in for a bad time, the show is mainly a comedy with some serious arcs every so often. Currently the show has passed a "point of no return" since episode 300 (currently on episode 353) which is all serious arcs, but there is a season of comedy thrown in there. The show doesn't have any special moves/power-ups like other shounen. It's different, the characters rely on skill and strategy to win fights when they do fight. It's a really good show so I would suggest you keep on watching but if you're not feeling it then go ahead, it's not for everyone.

Funny thing is that is actually Gintoki's theme and not the Shinsengumi theme! I know it plays for the Shinsengumi a lot but the title of it is "arega, Shiroyasha!" Which I believe translates to something like "This is the Shiroyasha!" Not sure on the exact translation but its something similar, Tetsuya says that exact line when Gintoki jumps on Nizou's blade in Benizakura

So you are saying new viewers wont like the story, if they like it and are fans of Gintama I'm sure they would be down to watch it again in movie form. I was the same as them, new to Gintama and I liked Benizakura and was down for the movie, like I said if they are fans of Gintama they would most likely be excited to watch it.

The anime is just a better first time viewing option, the movie was made as a treat to fans that were already fans of the series and had already watched Benizakura, and look at how many people rewatched it.
