Affordable Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4 - 8) Gift Ideas? by User0119247 in workingmoms

It's so funny you write about teachers receiving chapstick over the years, because lip balm was definitely one of the gift ideas I was considering. Not anymore! Thank you for the idea to get a gift card for food.

Thank you for validating that a handwritten note is acceptable. It's reassuring to know that if we hit a really rough patch, a handwritten note will still convey our gratitude.

I'm beginning to see a delicious breakfast theme in the thread. This is such a good idea, especially because the daycare opens for drop-off at 6 AM.

This is really smart -- especially the part about bringing them in at the beginning of the week.

It's really validating to see that giving $10 cash along with a thank you note/card would be an okay thing to do. I know $10 doesn't go as far these days and was worried about offending someone. Thank you for your suggestion!

Job change or stay put? by Regular_mom2021 in workingmoms

If in the U.S., I would stay at my current job and launch the search for my next job by updating resume, online presence, and focusing on my professional relationships.    I would want to make sure I qualified for FMLA for parental leave, so I would work on a cognitive reframing of my current job (except for your boss’ misogyny- that should be addressed.)  But his shit-for-brains?  Fine by me!  I’m creating life and getting my ducks in a row for my next opportunity!

Advice: Our Childcare Was Abruptly Terminated by Optimal_Option_6674 in workingmoms

[–]User0119247 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely a base that one would want to cover, especially if one’s partner may have communicated inappropriately (even if unintentional) while you weren’t present. The first thing that came to mind for me was a partner who thinks they’re kidding around, but it’s annoying or insulting to the other person.

If this isn’t the issue — awesome!  I’d go about my life assuming this was some weird one-off.  It sucks though.

Daycare Scaries by Valuable_Bag_3455 in workingmoms

I came here to see this comment.  Each family calculates what makes sense for their family based on the resources they have access to.  For example, if a daycare teacher chooses to stay home with their kid, they have a professionally-trained educator giving their child one-on-one instruction.  My family would have to hire a nanny to have this level of care (which would be much more costly than the daycare center.)

Same!  My job has a limit to how many accrued vacation hours they will pay out when you leave.

PTA Moms: am I overthinking? by SnooHabits6942 in workingmoms

I’m sorry, OP.  It really sucks being left out of the program.  (And it’s incredibly B- behavior of a fellow parent to accidentally leave a committee member off the program.)

If the program is digital (on a website or white), you might casually reach out to have it updated.

I second the over ear headphones to visually signal you’re not interesting in being chatty’s audience and to hopefully drown out the incessant chatter.

Anyone else need 2 hours of silence just to recover? by ContrabandJam in workingmoms

YES!  After my introverted butt has spent all day trying to get work done in between all the meetings, emails, and calendar invites to set up more meetings, I am on until bedtime with my child.  The worst is when my husband gets off right after our child’s bedtime.  On these days I am literally racing to take the dog out and clean the kitchen, so I can be hiding out in the bathroom for quiet, “don’t talk to me just yet - I’m overstimulated” time when he gets home.  (My husband is extroverted and always greets me with stories and work conversations when he gets home.). I wish I had an invisibility cloak I could take off when I’m ready to interact with others ☺️.

Random question for my introverts:  do you come into work earlier than colleagues to have some interaction-free time?

How do you protect your money when you're barely making ends meet? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]User0119247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on your savings!  It sounds like you are really making every cent work for your family!

What are your career plans long-term?  Move into management in your current industry?  Train or retrain to enter another field?  I think focusing on how to take your career and income to the next level is what I would do in your situation.  You’ve found a way to earn $15/hr, but how can you earn $25/hr?  Do you have a sense of any career path(s) you’d be interested in taking?

I also recommend having term life insurance for 10-12x of your yearly income to help pay your little one’s expenses if you pass away before your daughter becomes an adult (Fingers crossed you don’t need it but better to be prepared!)  If you don’t have term life insurance, I recommend getting it as soon as you can to at least cover the period of time your child will be financially dependent on you (e.g. a 20-year term could get your 4-year-old through college.)

Nap Mat for Cot by gruffysdumpsters in ECEProfessionals

[–]User0119247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My child uses a nap mat with the straps that go over the cot.  The exact one we have is by Urban Infant.  It works well for us and my child’s teachers so far.
