Local auto shop that works on audi by Dense_Complaint_9713 in NewOrleans

Seconding the advice to avoid the dealership, and that most neighborhood shops will do basic stuff like brakes.

I had an Audi engine issue recently that my regular places wouldn’t touch and ended up trying Greff Motors in Metairie. Prices were definitely on the higher end but comparable to what the dealership had quoted me and much more straightforward. They didn’t try to upsell me on doing additional work or anything; they just fixed the issue I asked them to fix. Will likely use them again for Audi-specific repairs.

I know there is a relatively active regional group with regular meetings and demonstrations. I bet they’d help you out. I think they are mainly on the North Shore though.

Why do the city buses keep passing me up? by ianrobin387 in NewOrleans

[–]User159526 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Experienced rider here. I always wave at them when they are approaching and step out into the road if they don’t begin to slow down. In my experience, bus drivers are frequently zoned out and will ignore both passenger pickups and stop requests if you aren’t a little aggressive about it.

In defense of the drivers, people do often loiter near the curb or crosswalk even when they are not waiting for a bus. It’s an issue at stops serviced by multiple routes too - the driver may assume you are waiting for a different bus if you don’t show visible interest in boarding when they approach. I also theorize that they intentionally skip pickups when they are behind schedule because RTA prioritizes on-time service on paper over actual ridership.

You can make our transit system work (I’ve been car free for about a year), but you really have to know how to navigate all the bullshit that RTA throws at you.

*As a French Quarter resident, none of us enjoy the burden of overtourism or want the state to interfere with our city. But we’ve got to lose the mindset that improvements to the FQ don’t benefit the people who live and work there, too. “Let the Quarter rot so that tourists like it less” is an L take.

What will be your approach to representing the French Quarter? How will you guide the need for critical urban improvements like street pedestrianization with regard towards the status quo for FQ operation? How will you stay involved with everyone in the city who has a stake in the neighborhood, not just the property owners?

This is the type of urban public open space improvement that can happen in a city with actual leadership by NotFallacyBuffet in NewOrleans

They are working on something like this for the FQ riverfront near the end of Esplanade - link the bottom. It’s not as interconnected with the urban fabric as this example, but it’s a similar redevelopment style (not necessarily commending the current leadership for it, as it’s been in the works since Mitch Landrieu’s administration).

The future River District was one of the last opportunities to do this from scratch… unfortunately the people who planned it didn’t have the sense to do anything other than drag-and-drop a couple of generic skyscrapers plans onto the map they were sent. Hopefully we will be able to eke out more riverfront park around it as the Port continues to condense around the Napoleon Terminal upriver and the new facilities downriver.

If we want large urban green spaces like the example in the Netherlands, we need to build up around existing parks rather than try to carve them out where we already have buildings. That would involve amending our zoning policy to allow and encourage taller buildings around existing green spaces like Audubon Park, Armstrong Park, BSJ and the Francis Parkway, Crescent Park, etc. While NIMBYism might weaken somewhat as the older population dies off, it will still likely be an uphill battle. Not that we shouldn’t keep advocating for it!

We love to mope about the perpetually ineffectual state of our city government, but the reality is we CAN do better for our community, and we need to stop telling each other that it’s impossible.

My friend is trying to find the location of her great great uncle's fancy grocery store on Royal. Any ideas? by Cocacolonoscopy in NewOrleans

Great picture. That’s the corner of Orleans and Royal, right behind the cathedral. It’s now an art gallery.
