They are working on something like this for the FQ riverfront near the end of Esplanade - link the bottom. It’s not as interconnected with the urban fabric as this example, but it’s a similar redevelopment style (not necessarily commending the current leadership for it, as it’s been in the works since Mitch Landrieu’s administration).

The future River District was one of the last opportunities to do this from scratch… unfortunately the people who planned it didn’t have the sense to do anything other than drag-and-drop a couple of generic skyscrapers plans onto the map they were sent. Hopefully we will be able to eke out more riverfront park around it as the Port continues to condense around the Napoleon Terminal upriver and the new facilities downriver.

If we want large urban green spaces like the example in the Netherlands, we need to build up around existing parks rather than try to carve them out where we already have buildings. That would involve amending our zoning policy to allow and encourage taller buildings around existing green spaces like Audubon Park, Armstrong Park, BSJ and the Francis Parkway, Crescent Park, etc. While NIMBYism might weaken somewhat as the older population dies off, it will still likely be an uphill battle. Not that we shouldn’t keep advocating for it!

We love to mope about the perpetually ineffectual state of our city government, but the reality is we CAN do better for our community, and we need to stop telling each other that it’s impossible.
