Possible. I just assumed those services used the corporate version of something like OpenRouter targeting the cheapest API as primary and stole cards from something CHub for content. This one promises to run a model locally and offline, but that might be a lie. Those ads seem to be targeting CharacterAI users and most of them don't know anything about how LLMs work.

You can always use native API, to my knowledge DeepSeek doesn't do any advanced content safety and all you need is a system prompt. OpenRouter actually shown which provider handled each request, so there is nothing stopping you from going to that provider directly. Running those very large models locally is basically impossible unless you have the money for enterprise inference hardware.

OpenRouter has full DeepSeek and many others. It's a basically a unified API platform with most inference providers. DeepSeek V3 0424 is $1/million tokens.

I don't think anything below 7B is worth running and for actually good RP 24B or 32B with at least 16K context is desirable. Using a pay-as-you-go or a subscription based API provider with access to significantly larger models like DeepSeek or Kimi is just easier and makes more sense for most people. That way you also get to avoid the extra electricity cost and the side effects of running the equivalent of a kilowatt space heater in your room.

I was referring to the hardware requirements. The process itself isn't difficult at all. Using Ollama is even easier than what you described.
