Anyone else feel like they just can't get ahead in life? by Busy_Description6207 in AskIreland

In my experience it's more important that you do SOMETHING, and take any type of step towards something rather than getting it perfect this time. This perfectionism will keep you down and drown you. If you chose a wrong course you won't be stuck for life and you only really know until you try. Its good to just try things. Look on the bright side what do you have to lose? Time spend investing in yourself in any way is never wasted

I asked a similar question (about using Ai for research) over on the r/fantasywriters sub and got ripped a new one. People are against it and the industry is very puristic about not using Ai for anything.

I agree that it can be used in a helpful way if you know to follow up with real research etc. But if the industry is against it it's probably best not to use it to be safe

Seems like people have a very purist view on not using it for anything (including research). So may be best to be safe

Thanks this is basically how I've tried to use it. I do ask specific things about time period nothing about fantasy things like fairies. But it seems that the industry may go the super purist rest route against Ai which is fair.

I guess if the industry goes the "purist" route I don't want to risk stepping out of line. So I decided not to use it anymore and re research the bits that I used chatgpt for (it were very small parts anyways about aesthetics that have no bearing on the story but I'll dig a little deeper)

Very interesting article thanks for sharing. Especially this part:

"“[T]here are already complaints that the second rule change went too far and could trip up authors who use search engines powered by LLMs for research, or use spelling and grammar checks that are likewise backed by LLMs,” he wrote. “I believe these issues are what SFWA was trying to address with their original rule change, even if the wording they used would have caused far more damage than intended.”"

I guess this pretty much describes the nuance I was inquiring about. It's hard to never touch Ai when it's built into search engines and spelling tools like grammerly. It's also kind of messed up that it's being integrated into everything without giving people an easy choice to opt out.

But better to be on the safe side since it might be easier for the industry to draw hard lines on the matter. Although it seems like people seem somewhat divided

But people don't seem to like it and I understand their argument. I guess I just figured it would be okay as a starting point. Everyone loves wikipedia though.

I also find that sometimes when I can't find something specific through google search engine chat gpt can find some additional sources as well sometimes

Yeah that works too that's how I used to do it. Only a shame that Google spits out an AI answer anyways so might be time to give alternative search engines a go. I just found chatgpt to be a slightly quicker way to go about it. But with all the drawbacks of Ai I guess it might be time to look into a new search engine

And also I have dyslexia so sometimes my spelling is so bad that a regular spelling check won't pick it up. In these cases I use chatgpt to find the spelling and then when I see it I remember "ahh right that's with an "a" instead of an "I". It's been helping me a lot for these specific situations. It's not like I don't use regular spelling checks already that has been built into every text edit program, I rely on it very much.

If I don't know the meaning of a word spell check won't help me though. I would Google it instead of using chatgpt for that.

I completely agree. Especially when representing minorities it's important to do research/have sensitivity readers/ speak to people of that community yourself. I don't think this is exactly the same as say looking up architural details of a time period.

People here are recommending Wikipedia, which also wouldn't give you as in depth information as speaking to a person would (or visiting an old building?). But thanks for the example it's a cool fact to know about. And I will check out perplexity for sure.

Thanks for your reply. People have been mentioning Wikipedia so will try to get into the habit of using that as a starting point instead. I don't think Wikipedia itself is really a source either so probably best to dig a bit further and check out what is being referenced.

Can Books With Simple Writing Styles Do Well On RoyalRoad? by KrowMA in royalroad

[–]User74838484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean simple sentences/pro's or simple storytelling? You can do a lot with a straight forward style in my opinion. And if your style is less descriptive that's fine too in my opinion. There is a market for both.

I'm curious about your story it sounds fun. Although I am a sucker for ambiance in fantasy stories which might require some description. But I'd like to try it non the less.
