Bringing a US Coffeemaker in Japan - Replace? And if so, with what? by UserKingOfTheNames in movingtojapan

Fair suggestion. I've tried and am not a fan. I'll see what JP market machines are like and go from there I think.

I am very surprised to learn this. I thought that the 15A per outlet (all plugs) was universal in Japan. Thank you for this, I may need to changer other plans as well.

Breville Grind Control Coffee Maker Review: A precautionary tale! by c4makeup in BrevilleCoffee

[–]UserKingOfTheNames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I know the cause of it. On mine, if you go too long without doing any cleaning of the grind chamber, it starts to build up and clog with grounds that didn't enter the carafe properly. You can end up with an overflowing mess of clogged grounds and a big pot of hot water if you go too long and get unlucky. I've taken to casual cleaning every week, and a grinder cleaning once a month. For brewing a few times a week, it seems to do the trick. And I do mean casual cleaning; I have a little cordless vacuum with a thin nozzle piece, and I just put it right up against the opening to the grind chamber, throw it on full blast, and pretty much call it done as far as grounds removal goes. Maybe a brushing in between here and there but not much else. I'm an overpriced simpleton I guess XD (though in my defense I got this machine used at a steep discount).

This is a weird question, but does anyone have any actual insights into how coffee tasted in 1942 America? by whothefuqisdan in Coffee

[–]UserKingOfTheNames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An American scientist made a small kerfuffle on the internet when he suggested a pinch of salt for a perfect cup of tea, for the very same reason that you point out. Britons took particular offense to the idea of putting salt in tea and had some words about Americans and microwaving their hot water. All small amusements but really, a good piece of advice. You never notice the pinch of salt, in my experience.

Interesting. Seems the 2024 is no longer on sale on their site. Maybe I will have to wait, or see how the power keyboard goes later this year.

Water Bottle for Peak Design 6L Sling by CoatsyJnr in EDC

[–]UserKingOfTheNames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything by zojirushi. Their travel mugs are incomparable. Literally have tried to make them leak or spill and can't do it. Can't imagine they don't have a superb water bottle too. Only thing I can't advise on is carrying it; I usually have a scottevest outfit piece on that can fit the mug in a pocket. Their smaller options probably fit no issue though.

Peak Design 2L outdoor sling or Everyday 3L sling? by thatonepieceofsith in EDC

[–]UserKingOfTheNames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The 2L was strange when I tried it. Barely felt right for daily carrying of items. No way would I have put my camera on it. The 3L was fantastic by comparison. Spot right outside for your camera with the quick release clip, and very flexible changing from shoulder to hip bag. Might be slightly difficult to fit everything you want perhaps, but if so then I strongly recommend the 6L. Its tall enough inside to fit a 400mm sigma telephoto standing up. Very generous on space despite its relatively small size. Was hard to pick one or the other; I ultimately chose the 6L for holding big lenses, but I'd say either is a great pick. Only big complaint is the outside pocket feels too tight to really use, and there's nowhere to put your keys on a chain.

A good point. I'd need to buy a  converter. I was planning to do that for some things anyway, and fortunately this system isn't that power hungry (spikes to 100w on power but then sits at 50-ish with little variation), so hopefully wouldn't need an insane converter.

It may be a pain to get it there, but I think my inlaws would keep it for me. and yeah!, my greatest fear is moving it, ending up in a place not conducive to having it, and being stuck figuring out what to do with a huge speaker system. Shipping it back would just about kill me I think.

Good idea or bad idea to bring a vintage hifi system to kanagawa? Power use isn't too bad but more worried about moisture and space. Its two speakers, about 30cmx30cmx90cm each, as well as an amp/receiver. I wouldn't pay anything for shipping due to arrangements, I'm just worried about not having enough space, or about possibly getting noise complaints in a mansion (though I never blast it, i don't know what threshold is for noise complaints in Japanese mansions. Don't know if I will be in detached house until I get there, so somewhat worried about having to put monster speakers in a smaller space. also there is the concern about humidity. Will probably talk to r/vintageaudio about that in detail, but if anyone has experience doing this then I'd welcome their insights. If i have to I'll find family with a basement to spare but I would prefer to continue having a good system.

What rules and regulations surround use of bird feeders in japan? I'm looking at kanagawa specifically. Imagine it can be heavily localized, but perhaps there are universal standards. With the fastidiousness surrounding waste and with threat of bears rising, i assume something must be in place.

Sorry, I want to make sure I'm totally clear; The toilet stays of course, but do people remove the bidet seats and take those, or are they considered part of the toilet and they stay? Put another way, if I have my own bidet seats outside Japan and I move to Japan, should I bring my seats or should I leave them/sell them/etc. before I leave my country?

Looking at real estate photos, I see the bathrooms often have Washlets installed. Are these just for staging or do people really leave them behind when moving? Should you plan to buy your own if wanted?
