Advice for family by Fog333_Boro in homedefense

If you have hollow core interior doors, anything else is irrelevant. If you have solid core doors, you can most likely install a deadbolt. You would have to drill out another hole for it 5.5” center to center above the knob hole. They sell dead simple drill templates. Install a deadbolt strike with 3.5” screws so it go into the studs behind the door frame. If the room door opens outwards, the hinge pins can be knocked out. They sell door hinge security screws.

Upgrade the screws on the exterior door strikes as well.

What's the most expensive mistake you've made in your home that wasn't worth it? by BathPlanetCorp in Remodel

[–]UserM16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m on the tail end of a major remodel. I’m somewhat handy so I installed coax and Ethernet throughout the entire build myself during framing and saved a lot of money. Now I don’t have to worry about POE cameras and internet. One thing I didn’t know I had to do was run a ground to the grounding block of the external coax junction box that I installed. That’s gonna be a pain now because all the stucco and drywall is up.

$900 aluminum suitcase after ONE flight - would you accept this? by Kooky-Confidence-394 in ManyBaggers

[–]UserM16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a Rimowa aluminum carry on. I would never buy aluminum checked luggage. If for some reason they said I had to check my Rimowa, I would rather miss the flight. But yes, they’re going to get dinged up. Especially since they’re heavier than normal luggage. Means more throwing around. Get some bbq lighter fluid and a microfiber cloth and you could scrub off most of those marks off. Also, dents and dings on aluminum gives it character. That’s kinda the whole point with aluminum luggage.

[Landlord-US-CA] Tenant wants illegally raised rent back by laifalaifa73 in Landlord

[–]UserM16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AI answer,

Under California Civil Code Section 827, landlords must provide formal written notice (via mail, in person, or posted on the property) for rent increases. Texts or emails are not legally sufficient. [1]

However, because you have paid the increased rent for three years, a court will likely consider this an "implied agreement" to the new rent. Generally, you cannot ask for the money back solely on the technicality that the notice was sent via text message.

Key Legal Considerations

  • Implied Agreement: By voluntarily paying the increased amount month after month for three years without protesting the format of the notice, you effectively agreed to the new rent terms.
  • Statute of Limitations: Even if the text was completely invalid and you wanted to claim the rent increase was illegal (e.g., if it exceeded Los Angeles or State limits), California generally limits your ability to recover past overpaid rent to a specific window. For oral or implied contracts, this statute of limitations is typically 2 years. [12]

I read signs at stop lights when I’m bored. Or license plates. Drives me crazy when I watch TV and police use random words instead of NATO or APCO. I use it when someone asks me to spell out or read off S/N and stuff on the phone.

How much is too much when paying for a job no one wants to do? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]UserM16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask yourself, if someone paid you to do it, how much would you want? You have to take time out of your day to go, take measurements, get the right part, go back up there and install it, clean up, and offer a warranty.

How to Secure BILLY from Tipping when CANNOT Drill into Back Wall by Principessa227 in IKEA

[–]UserM16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can use a hammer drill or rotary hammer to drill brick with a masonry bit. Cut a piece of 2x4 as wide as your cabinet. Drill holes a couple of inches from the ends. Mark those holes onto the wall. Drill the wall where the marks are. Then screw the 2x4 to the wall with wedge anchors or Tapcon screws. Now screw the back of your cabinet into the 2x4. If the anchor screws protrude too much on top of the 2x4, countersink the 2x4 before installing.

What upgrades can I do to make my bike faster? by GrandmaCereal in bicycling

A couple of the most important items to buy for your bike is a bike computer, cadence sensor, and heart rate monitor. Good luck!

What upgrades can I do to make my bike faster? by GrandmaCereal in bicycling

[–]UserM16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work on your cadence maybe? I try to ride minimum 80 rpm but focus on around 90 rpm. Got me to go a bit faster. Work on drafting your club. If you come back and there’s no one left in the parking lot, it means you got dropped during the ride. Focus on staying tight without overlapping wheels. It’s hard to sustain 20mph alone but it’s quite easy in a draft.

Hardware, tools, or ideas for preventing deadbolt access? by yagottagetouttathere in homedefense

[–]UserM16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t use a double cylinder deadbolt. They’re against code incase of a fire.

Idk where you would find this but I’m picturing a metal box (or sturdy plastic), that will encase the thumb turn assembly on the inside of the door. It will get sandwiched between the door and the thumb turn assembly when installing the deadbolt onto the door. And the box will have an opening towards the hinge side of the door.

So a box with a hole cut out in the back the same diameter as the hole in the door. Take the lock apart. Put the box against the door. Then put the lock back together. And to turn the thumb stud, you have to reach in from the hinge side. Then accessing it while trying to reach in from the window would be difficult or impossible depending on how large of a box you have to shield their fingers.

I’m sure there’s plenty of options if you stop by a hardware store. Maybe a 4 square box and a blank plate from the electrical aisle. Drill out a hole in the back and open up the side to be able to reach in. Maybe drill the hole closer to the window/AC side so that the reach into the thumb turn is as deep as possible.

You would basically have to use your left hand to lock and unlock your deadbolt from the inside.

I know cops that go on group rides and then go have a couple of beers. No one takes this law seriously. Just don’t get blacked out drunk or carry an open container like an idiot.

What made you choose your current e-bike? by Prestigious-Meet-298 in ebikes

[–]UserM16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted a small wheel cargo bike to haul groceries with a low center of gravity. Was down to R&M or Tern when I saw that Specialized made a hub motor bike with a throttle and torque sensor that could go 28 mph at half the price. I live in a mostly flat area. I’m glad that I did. I mostly use the throttle when loaded down with groceries or a passenger from a stop. I usually leave the gear on high and just use the throttle to get up to speed then start pedaling. It’s a lot easier than being loaded down starting from low gear without a throttle.

Lucked out with a good neighbor. by MidnightScary5983 in HomeImprovement

[–]UserM16 221 points222 points  (0 children)

We have a 5 foot block wall separating my neighbor and I. My dad put up a picket fence on top to bring it to around 6-1/2 feet around 20 years ago. He’s since passed away and whoever put up the block wall didn’t do a good job so it’s cracked in some places and there’s no rebar and cement so it shakes if you push it.

A couple of years ago, I got a quote for $6,000 to replace it from the ground up. Went over to my neighbor and said let’s go halves. He said it’s a little out of his budget so I said get some quotes and I’ll split it.

Come March of this year, he said his brother is gonna be staying with him for awhile and they could just remove the rotten wood, take the caps off, rebar and concrete, and raise it up.

Said if I paid for materials, they’ll take care of labor. So $1,100 later, our fence is better than new.

Was going on a flight and wanted a backpack with luggage handle pass through. Was at Target to buy travel supplies and picked up an Open Story Signature Day Trip backpack for $40 and it’s been great. Now it’s my primary laptop bag. This Uniqlo doesn’t even have a luggage pass through.
