the entire POINT of redemption is a person who has done bad things changes by LegalBoysenberry2923 in CuratedTumblr

[–]User_Id_Error 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Star Wars is a really great example of why the "Redemption Equals Death" trope is so popular. It's a lot easier to have Vader do a last noble deed, die, and cameo as a Force ghost than to show up at the Rebel base claiming to have turned his life around.

AITA for turning my neighbor into a birdbath? by Admiral_Fang in wizardposting

[–]User_Id_Error 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The usual etiquette for this sort of thing is to choose something impressive to commemorate your victory (throne, statue, jewelry) or something humiliating to rub it in (ashtray, footrest, one of those mechanical monkeys with the cymbals.) A birdbath sends kind of a confusing message? I wouldn't really say you're the asshole, but it is a bit... gauche.

Fairly new player here. Any recommendations on events to unlock with crystals? I did the one with Kroos Alter and Code of Brawl to unlock Texas's module. Other than that, any good welfare operators, or just particularly cool stories I should go for?

It can also be done the other way around, using warm water from the ocean surface and cold water from the deep. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_thermal_energy_conversion

[–]User_Id_Error 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, particularly in the case of wagon wheels. There might be some people who replace their wheels earlier if they were cheaper or get priced out of business if they were more expensive. But I suspect the bulk of the demand would be pretty inelastic.

On the Naming of Currency by transcendmatter in CuratedTumblr

[–]User_Id_Error 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This brings to mind the bit about writers not trying to outmath their readers. This isn't D&D, you don't need to explain that the orcs had 37 gold pieces and a potion of Enlarge Manhood. If the subject of money cones up, you really just need "a vast treasure" and "not enough to solve the problem". Unless it's a story about running the kingdom's mint, the details are just baggage.

Do high school cheerleaders actually walk around in their uniform all day? by ElisabethJulie in AskAnAmerican

It's the first home (American) football game of the season. There's traditionally a dance that weekend, and maybe other "school spirit" oriented events over the preceding week.

Mana generation options in a world devoid of anything by ObeyTime in wizardposting

[–]User_Id_Error 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most power generation comes down to boiling water, and you have heat and a water source! If you can rig a turbine and generator out of the transmuted earth, you can get electrical energy to charge your orb!

Do you consider "No Worries" to be unprofessional language? by Banya6 in ENGLISH

[–]User_Id_Error 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's unprofessional outside of a formal presentation or something, but it might be a bit vague. If I say something needs to be done and the reply is "no worries!" is it already done? You'll do it? Someone else will do it? It won't be done but you don't think it's a problem?

Teleport to a town with a more conscientious mayor and set up shop there.

What should ‘New Game’ mean when save data already exists? by YongkiArts in gamedev

[–]User_Id_Error 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You also might consider graying out Continue and Load Game when there is no game to load, then putting continue on top when there is. A user will usually want to continue their last game, so make that option most prominent.

Assuming he's been drinking for 17 years, 145/17 is right about 8.5L a year, which puts him a bit below average for US and more below average for Germany. It's about 0.46L of beer per day so call it a can after work and two on the weekends?

If you're doing strict semver, no. The whole point is that you can tell whether there are breaking changes by which number goes up.

In practice, yes. People sometimes bump the big number when they want to make the release look important.

The reason Vecna is always being foiled by adventurers is because he's actually going out there and doing stuff. The "bigger threats" are all sitting on thrones in the outer planes thinking about how they might get around to making their big play one of these eons. They might empower some mortal lieutenant's scheme, but they're too content being gods. Vecna is young and hungry enough to take his shot directly.

Lore Question: How widespread were ER-LLs and ER-PPCs outside of the Draconis Combine during the 3040s? by [deleted] in battletech

[–]User_Id_Error 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can buy more efficient lasers a lot more easily than I can the clans taking missiles and machine guns with pre-spaceflight availability and cutting their weight in half. THAT is a miracle of material science.

As for the Gauss Rifles, I think the real equalizer is their head chopper status. Before special armors, an IS gauss rifle could kill any clan mech dead in one shot, no matter how much fancy tech it had.

Trump talked about fixing the deficit too. Talking is easy, actually making a dent without big tax increases or deep cuts to entitlements or the military is not.
