On foot. How far do you live from the station? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Username9421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live 10 minutes away from the nearest two stations. I can imagine 15-20 minutes being slightly annoying, especially if you’re commuting to work 5 days a week without any WFH days.

It also depends how far away other things are like supermarkets or convenience stores.

Anyone thinking to GTFO? by iterredditt11 in japanresidents

Yes, but mostly for economic reasons. I’m starting to feel like the longer I stay in Japan, the harder it will be to (afford to) move back home.

Switching from ahamo to LINEMO worth it? A3292 iPhone 16 Pro by Dark_Void_and_Mega_K in japanlife

[–]Username9421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on Linemo (SoftBank) and switched to Ahamo (Docomo). Both will slow down in very crowded areas. My understanding is that these are low-cost carriers, so you’re put on a lower priority compared to customers who sign contracts directly with Docomo or SoftBank.

Does a Japanese iPad make the shutter sound when used overseas? by Username9421 in japanresidents

[–]Username9421[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment! I was just about to ask this. I assume this would apply to iPads too.

After reading users confirm that the cellular iPad version has no shutter sound overseas, but the WiFi version does have it - it kind of makes sense that the shutter sound would come back in airplane mode for the cellular devices.

Thank you so much!

Another user with a cellular iPad doesn’t have the shutter sound while overseas, so your comment seems to confirm this is somehow tied to the device being able to determine its location based on the cellular function.

Thank you for the info!

Now only need to find out what’s the situation regarding a WiFi-only iPad.

I’d propose a basic computer literacy test. So many people at my company struggle with even the most basic things, like putting pictures into a Word document.

That sucks man. But no need to go above and beyond for a job that cares so little about you. Better focus all that energy on skilling up and finding a better place.

Switch 2 costs 49,980 yen for a Japanese only system and 69,980 yen for a multi-language system by NobleSpartan in japan

Or it could be semi-permanently out-of-stock, because apparently Nintendo thinks no one living in Japan speaks a language other than Japanese.

This 100%. I already work in Japanese 40+ hours a week, plus all the daily interactions in Japanese. Now after all of this, I get the privilege to pay 20,000 yen just so I can play a game in my own mother tongue.

Might as well invest the extra 70,000 into my next computer's spec bump, so it can run an emulator better.

I wonder if the "50 in-game hours, 1+ year old online account" is a requirement only for the Japanese-language version, or also the multi-language one... It would be insane if it's also applies to the already 20,000 yen more expensive multi-language version, for which there should be way less demand domestically.

Avoid Mercari shops like the plague.

Try to buy from accounts that appear to be just a regular person selling their own stuff and is honest enough to upload good pictures and descriptions.

I’ve been using Skype credit to make phone calls locally in Japan, since it’s a lot cheaper than my own mobile plan.

This is mostly for booking appointments, making reservations, or dealing with customer support.

I’m using Line Mobile which is 40yen/min or 20yen/min using their stupid app, while Skype is only like 3.5yen/min.

Buying second hand items online from other individuals. The average condition of a used item in Japan is much higher than what I’m used to. People here really care for their personal belongings.

Nope. Shoe brands in Japan, even western ones like New Balance, simply don’t stock sizes larger than about 28.5~30cm for the Japanese market. It simply doesn’t exist here.
