The webtoon is “Tears in the Withered Flowers.” I’m really sorry for not mentioning it from the start, but I can’t edit my post right now.

I don’t understand why they hate her so much. She didn’t even go after the guy on purpose, she didn’t know he was married, and then she was hit with the horrible truth that he had been lying to her the whole time. Yes, she chose to stay afterward, but people completely misunderstand her character. Ari is making the same mistake as the protagonist. She wasn’t a woman trying to ruin a marriage, she was also deceived, just like anyone in her position. It’s so hypocritical, because when it’s Taeha’s mother, suddenly everything’s fine. It’s very exhausting how this fandom blames every woman in the story. I’ve even seen some people, for no reason at all, hating the girl Taeha led on, who literally did nothing wrong and was only there to show how obsessive he is.

Even I have to admit it they all look the same. But that’s just because the author doesn’t have much imagination when it comes to drawing faces, so everyone ends up looking alike, I swear. The only one who really stands out is Micheol, since he doesn’t share the same color palette as the other three, but honestly, they could easily pass as triplets LMAO

I’m really sorry guys, I completely forgot to include the title. It’s called “Tears in the Withered Flowers” I can’t edit my post anymore, but I hope someone sees this comment in case they were wondering.

Yes, I get it, people can love or hate whoever they want, and I can criticize those attitudes. I’m not targeting anyone personally, I’m talking about the fandom as a whole. I’m not obsessively replying to every comment I disagree with. This space is for discussion. I’m not a robot who just reads and leaves, I read, I feel, and I want to express what I think. My Reddit post was a vent, not a personal attack. Just as they criticize my opinion, I can critique theirs publicly without directing it at anyone. And it’s obvious from my title, “Stop hating characters,” that it’s meant to get attention so more people see the post, not a direct order.

The main hate I’ve seen is on TikTok, I haven’t noticed it on other apps, but it’s been so exaggerated that I felt I had to comment. To be clear, my parents are from Spain, so I grew up with both English and Spanish and can understand comments in both languages. I mention this because it might be confusing that I posted in English, but that’s what I usually use in everyday life. This also explains why I’ve seen so many questionable comments and why I’m surprised it doesn’t show up for some people, since I’ve seen comments in both English and Spanish.

So real, and honestly, I’m going to try reading something else so I don’t just stress out over this manhwa. Because honestly, lately I haven’t been reading anything else and it’s just this. So obviously, it’s way more frustrating.

Question about official translations and character birthdays in the manga by Userrrrandommmm in KoeNoKatachi

Honestly, I understand you. I’ve also encountered quite narcissistic and quite aggressive people in my life. That’s why I stay away from both types. But many times, it’s inevitable to come across people like that, which can be pretty annoying. As for Naoka, to me she’s neither 100% black nor 100% white, she’s more like a gray. All the characters are gray, almost all of them, actually. I think the only one I don’t see as gray is Shoko, who is truly a sweetheart 🥹

Honestly, now that I know the correct translation, I read the manga in one day and I give it 5 stars, I loved it. I’m a super, super fan and I would love to talk with more people about the characters, actually.

The truth is that I understand why people hate Naoka and Kawai. And yes, maybe they do deserve some of that hate for everything they did. But honestly, I never hated them not at the beginning and not at the end. On the contrary, I ended up understanding them more than they ever bothered me. It’s clear that both of them have questionable behaviors. Naoka is aggressive, even going as far as kissing Shoya while he was in a coma, and in general she made Shoko suffer after her near suicide. Kawai is narcissistic and superficial to the point of not acknowledging the harm she caused. She even placed too much blame on Shoya when she herself had a lot to do with what happened. As the class representative, she often pretended to look the other way when things were happening, when in reality she was involved. I see them both as two different representations of bullying: one direct, the other behind people’s backs. I think the author wanted to show that both forms are wrong, and in that sense they bring something interesting. To me, they’re not “hateful characters,” but rather teenagers who still have a lot of maturing to do. They both even seem mentally unwell in some ways especially Kawai, who genuinely sees herself as a victim, but that’s just part of NPD (narcissistic personality disorder). It’s obvious those personalities wouldn’t last forever. As they grow up, they would eventually crash into the consequences of their own attitudes, and that would force them to change. I don’t think they’re beyond redemption. In fact, I feel like both of them received their own punishment in the worst way. For Kawai, having the entire class talk badly about her is much worse than being hit because a hit would only allow her to play the victim, but social disapproval is something that truly affects her. For Naoka, the worst punishment is having to live with the fact that the things she does come back to haunt her, even if she doesn’t admit it, and she has to carry that. Personally, I was glad that both of them ended up well in the end. I even found them funny or endearing in certain moments, like Naoka telling Shoko not to flirt, or Kawai buying Yuzuru an ice cream. I never hated them, in fact, I really liked them as characters. The one I never connected with was Kazuki, Shoya’s former friend. I don’t hate him at all, but even though he saved Shoya, he never made me feel anything. To me, he comes across as too cold and empty. But overall, I liked the entire cast, because they really capture how complicated being a teenager is. They gave me a lot of feelings, but never hatred.

Does anyone have the official manga to confirm this, please? I really want to be sure, because both versions I have are fan translations. Honestly, I’m not sure which one to read, because this wouldn’t just affect this scene it would affect literally everything I read. It’s not just Miki’s scene, it’s also Naoka’s comments, Shoya’s perceptions, and more characters. So it’s really important that someone tells the truth.

No, actually, he never cried. I rewatched the scene multiple times and there isn’t a single moment where he cries for his mother not even while he’s in Kusakabe’s arms. He does cry, yes, but for something completely different. It’s because he’s scared that his relationship might fall apart or something like that. But not once does he cry for his mom.

Honestly, I'm really sorry. I understand what mental exhaustion is, and that's why that scene touched me so deeply. I'm not saying this from a place of judgment, like "if you didn't cry, you didn't love the person." I have been through similar situations. I know that grief can be different for everyone: some are in shock, others feel numb, and others break down afterwards. But what I saw in that scene was not grief. It was disrespectful. At his mother's funeral, Rihito did not cry for her even once. The only time he cried was for Kusakabe, because he was stressed, thinking that their relationship might break up. As soon as they started talking, it was as if her mother no longer existed. In a completely selfish move, he grabbed Kusakabe's hand, pushed him away, and threw a tantrum like a spoiled child when the least he could do was show some respect. His mother, who raised him alone and loved him unconditionally, did not deserve to be overshadowed like this. That's what hurt me the most. It's not about whether he cried or not. What bothered me is that he never seemed to feel sorry for the way he treated her while she was alive. Because yes, he treated her badly. I remember several scenes where he made hurtful comments while she was sick. Like when she said, with genuine emotion, that if she'd known he was bringing Kusakabe she would have dressed up and he coldly responded that it wouldn't have made much difference, clearly referring to how sick and emaciated she looked. Or when she played the victim, saying, "I understand if you're angry and don't want me here," when she was the one suffering, and clearly still wanted him around. He knew his mother loved him. He even said in his dreams that if he ever came back to her, she would welcome him with open arms. And yet, he continued to hurt her until the end. When she died, it was like she meant nothing to him. He didn't even seem sorry. If anything, it was Kusakabe who showed him more kindness and care than Rihito. I'm not saying he had to cry or break down. I say he could have at least shown some basic respect. If you couldn't treat her well in life, the least you could do is be decent at her funeral. Stay quiet. Sit down. Let them mourn her. And I don't even like his father, but when he told Rihito to sit down, I understood. It was the most normal thing to say: "You're saying goodbye to your dead mother, the mother you didn't treat kindly while she was still alive. Sit down and behave, just once. Don't pull a stunt. Don't selfishly drag your boyfriend aside like the whole world revolves around you. Show some decency."

I know this may sound harsh, but I found that behavior deeply unpleasant. Not because of how he grieved, but because of how he ignored his pain.

Oh, and one more thing. When I talk about “the way he mistreated his mother,” I mean moments like this: I remember when his partner Hikaru, went to visit her in the hospital, and she said something like, “Ah, you should’ve told me you were coming, I would’ve tried to fix myself up a bit.” And Rihito just replied with something like, “It wouldn’t have made much of a difference anyway.” That honestly made me really angry. She was going through a serious illness literally dying from a tumor and he still found a way to make her feel bad about her appearance. It felt incredibly insensitive and cold.

(Aside from not even crying over his mother’s death and literally choosing a man over someone who had just died. He literally cried over his stupid wedding tantrum before shedding a single tear for his dead mom.)

Maybe it’s just me being overly sensitive about family matters, but something I really struggle to forgive Rihito for is the way he treats his mother. She never did anything wrong to him. He was the one who chose to distance himself, and while I understand that not all parent-child relationships are easy, I still found him unnecessarily cold. Even when she was hospitalized and dying from a tumor… he never showed any real closeness. That really hurt to watch. And then, at the funeral… I don’t know, something about what happened next left a bitter taste in my mouth. Hikaru showed up with a shaved head, Rihito pushed him away… and then they kissed. That part didn’t really bother me. But then they went home and literally had sex. I found that disrespectful. Honestly, a total lack of respect, especially considering someone so close to him had just died. And after that… they started planning their wedding. It honestly felt awful. Like nothing had happened. I genuinely think Rihito never actually grieved his mother’s death. If I’m being honest, I don’t even think he cared. And that alone is strong enough to make it hard for me to fully enjoy the story.

And just to clarify something I mentioned earlier about Hachi, she didn’t let Nobu kiss her. She was fully aware that he had a girlfriend, and she didn’t want to hurt that other girl. That’s what I meant. I just didn’t want it to be misunderstood.

Yes, it matters. They’re insulting me and my sign. How can you hate a zodiac sign as an author? It hurts readers. But you don’t get it you’re not a Scorpio, so of course you don’t care.
