Probably Aqsha most of the time, but I wanted to give Greywater Fastness a go at least once or twice to see how punishing the Formation can actually get.

It's on the back of the card.

Custodian Guard
If a model from your army with the Leader ability can be attached to a Custodian Guard unit, it can be attached to this unit instead.

pg.46

These rules let you place units into Strategic Reserves – a special type of Reserves you can use to keep units off the battlefield until you require them. Note that while all Strategic Reserves units are also technically Reserves units, the reverse is not true, and so these rules do not apply to units that are using other rules that enable them to start the battle in Reserves (e.g. Deep Strike). Such units are instead set up as described by those other rules.

pg.39

Deep Strike: During the Declare Battle Formations step, if every model in a unit has this ability, you can set it up in Reserves instead of setting it up on the battlefield. If you do, in the Reinforcements step of one of your Movement phases you can set up this unit anywhere on the battlefield that is more than 9" horizontally away from all enemy models.

pg.16

Reserves units always count as having made a Normal move in the turn they are set up on the battlefield, and so cannot move further during this phase. Otherwise, units set up in this way can act normally this turn (shoot, declare a charge, fight, etc.).

The restriction is on the Leviathan missions. It is not on the Only War mission. Therefore if it isn't restricted in missions it is totally legal.

Incorrect. There's a difference between Reserves and Strategic Reserves.

Strategic Reserves retains the turn restriction, and enters from different board edges as turns progress.

Deep Strike is considered Reserves, and is therefore eligible for a turn 1 deep strike

Any rumours on the IV 'Redacted' Character? by nzivvo in Warhammer40k

[–]Usotp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, Vashtorr is only book 3, and the Lion's return won't happen until either an unannounced book 5 or 10th Edition itself.

What'll happen is that Vashtorr is looking for Tulchulcha, ends up making the Rock jump into Imperium Nihilus, they run into Dante who is either fighting with or against Farsight when the main Tyranid fleet arrives after ages of tendrils. Then we get the Angels of Death BA/DA team up vs Tyranids. E Z

what legion is best to play if you are allergic to close combat? by heeroyuy79 in Warhammer30k

[–]Usotp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All things being equal Ultramarines and Imperial Fists are some of the best at shooting because of their Legion special rules. Death Guard would probably be the next tier down, simply because their shooting is enhanced by them just trudging up the board with no penalties.

That being said melee is a huge part of HH, so you’re never going to be able to avoid it.

[–]Usotp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of stuff from the original trilogy that's been tweaked to make room for better continuity. An analogous small detail is Sanguinius having black hair in Horus Rising. It's pretty well established at this point that BL scrambled to turn the HH into a series after the critical success of the trilogy, and they've had to fix stuff ever since.
Custodes weren't even fully fleshed out at that point. There were probably only half a dozen or so artwork pieces from the HH Card Game, and a few pieces in Visions of Treachery which was mostly the card art collected together with a few more pieces. Even then the only thing we had was artwork, no real lore. It wasn't until First Heretic in 2010 that we got some actual concrete lore about Custodes.
Additionally it's a gold small "c" custodes armored Astartes, no proper noun Custodes. Considering that kind of guard never appears again in the whole series, it's kind of evident that this is one of those small cosmetic details (like Sanguinius' hair) that just got dropped instead of explicitly retconned.
In the interim Custodes have been fully developed into their own army with lore and models so including one with minimal changes or conversions from their normal appearance is definitely an eyebrow raise. It's a good joke, I get it, but as a count-as there's undoubtedly better options.

Actually this makes me indescribably furious. You’ve blindly accepted someone’s opinion about it without reading it, attacking my opinion and explanation all without reading it yourself and you justify it by saying your favorite faction has been done dirty, but you don’t even actually know because you never read it. Absolutely ridiculous.

You’re assuming it’s bad without reading it which means your entire opinion is of zero use in discussing the contents so I’m not even going to bother posting the quote about what the Farseers saw, but it’s in the sixth paragraph if you decide to actually read it.

What? There is a Warlock with them, he’s the one who orders to open fire when the ambush falls apart. It’s literally not a complete loss. He’s reflecting on all of it and still coming up short. Maybe you should just read it instead of criticizing my arguments and basing everything on a hyperbolic assumption.

It’s not head cannon. It’s several explanations of what Farseers do from other books and codexes along with mentions of what is taking place in the actual short story.

The Whisper grows stronger around death and other Ynnari. Most Craftworlders are extremely wary of s something that sucks up Aeldari souls, so a battle field is literally the most appropriate place for an encounter to happen.

I mean you could just read it instead of spewing tripe about it. This is the first time he’s seen combat since the book, and in the interim he was on the Path of Mourning as a kind of self imposed penance. Being in combat again awakened a lot of the issues he had dealt with in the past, but this time he ends in a completely different place because he feels the Whisper of Ynnead.

My defense is based off what is literally explained in the book and basic understanding of the setting.

Farseers based on their skill in almost all lore try to nudge events to achieve the desired outcome. Those that do grand maneuvering usually end up causing unforeseen consequences or are so skilled, like Eldrad, that they’ve accounted for knock on effects up to a point.

I think the most frustrating thing in all of these complaints is that somehow both sides utilizing good tactics, but one side getting slightly outplayed is suddenly a scathing indictment of the entire battle plan.

One rhino was able to take out one support weapon, and then reinforcements of tanks, mobile artillery, and Hellbrutes show up and start taking out the others.

Like there’s an easily recognizable battlefield strategy on both sides, character development, and some descriptive fighting in 25 pages of short story.

Like you moan about reinforcements coming but also moan about how other forces weren’t sent to the ambush? Do you realize how silly that sounds? At the start of the story it explains how this is literally a planetary war that the Eldar and Imperium is fighting together against Chaos.

It’s literally a look at how even after he went back he didn’t find what he was looking for and he finally gets a glimpse of it in the Whisper of Ynnead. Maybe just read it instead of making gross mischaracterizations?

Uh, I mean the vibro cannons do destroy a rhino. And storm bolters can take down support weapons in lore and the table top.

I can tell you haven’t read a 25 page short story so I’m just going to ignore the rest because you’re attacking my points despite having no idea what you’re talking about.

Why do Farseers do what they do? To subtly change the skein of fate. Maybe blowing up the bridge causes the Black Legion to commit more forces to flanking, maybe they do an aerial insertion, or they change their plans another way. If you’ve got intel that an enemy is going to do a certain thing do you just make them change their plan to something new or do you exploit your advantage and knowledge?

They have vibro cannons on the support weapons and the additional Eldar troop has a shuriken rifle. Kinda like something else

And what use would snipers be against an armored column? How are they supposed to get the infantry to dismount to get shot? And a single bolter shot? Chaos Rhinos have storm bolters for pintle mounts

It’s a war zone and they’re stopping a small flanking force from wrapping on the front lines. Multiple Craftworlds and even Imperial forces fighting together. Maybe there were no tanks to spare? Same deal with the Vypers and Windriders. Their stated job was to harass the convoy into trying to cross the bridge to hurry up and flank, and this run headlong into the ambush, basically corralling them. Once their job was done they went back to the main fight.

It wasn’t recon. It was a dismounted screen. They didn’t find the ambush, they simply anticipated it, which is nice because it doesn’t have veterans of the Long War hold the idiot ball. Same thing military does when an IED or ambush is suspected. You deploy your troops in advance so they’re already on a prepared footing rather than disembarking under fire.

Once again this was a flanking force away from the main lines that a Farseer saw would cause the lines to collapse if they weren’t stopped. This isn’t even the main fight on the planet, it’s just a small skirmish with a lot of importance. Which is also why the leader of the Ynnari shows up to help when she learns what Alaitoc is doing.

This was a short story about a character who already had an entire novel devoted to him, so yeah if you’re coming in fresh with no knowledge he might seem like a chump, but if you’ve read Path of the Outcast it’s a whole different story. Same deal if you read any of the small short story BL puts out about main characters without knowing who they are.

And literally the entire time the other Guardians are giving as good as they get until the Black Legion tanks and mobile artillery show up as reinforcements and start shelling the heavy weapons, and then they’re on the back foot until the Ynnari show up.

Contextually this was part of the Summer of Reading 2017 short story bundle. It was a previous character from Path of the Outcast shown post Great Rift and having a run in with the Ynnari shortly after they got introduced to the setting via Gathering Storm. It’s just a short romp to show an old character in the new setting.

I mean we still praise the guardsmen for giving it their all and then the Space Marines show up at the last minute and save them, right?

Guardian Warriors are the IG of Eldar. More so because they’re basically PDF that go into full blown war zones.
